Do your scrum-using organization put users at the development process?!? I don't think I've seen any Agile¹ organization doing that.

1 - The one with capital "A", that is an antonym of the one with lower cap "a".

marcos ,

That's a remarkable coincidence!

Anyway, yes, it's not disallowed or impossible.

marcos ,

Companies will save so much money once they decide to replace their CEOs with AIs..

marcos ,

If you are trying to seriously understand how to do it... well, you can't. Current AIs can't fully replace anybody, and it's an open question if they can partially replace (AKA improve the productivity) anybody to any impactful extent.

marcos ,

I don’t see a way out

Free software exists. And if you have any power over a non-small organization, it's also something you can help improve to fit your needs.

Lemmy is a failed Reddit alternative

I first joined Lemmy back during the big Reddit exodus of last year. I like many others wanted an alternative to Reddit, and I thought that this might've been the one. I made two accounts, one on lemmy.world and another on sh.itjust.works, in the June of last year that I used on and off for about 4 months....

marcos ,

There's an ecosystem of entire instances with crazy rules.

The fact that Lemmy just doesn't become unusable with all this brokerage tells a lot about the benefits of a distributed system.

marcos ,

SVG? SVG isn't half a language, it's a completely functional one!

marcos ,

It's not even the coercion that is the problem here. The types are already bad by themselves.

marcos ,

I don't think "easier" is the right way to compare here. The C++ build tools will absolutely rewrite your code into something you can't expect to guess, but it doesn't make them hard to "use".

marcos ,

It's a much larger problem when there are several different cables.

marcos ,

The year Linux takes over the desktops!

I fell like the reason nobody uses FileZila and etc anymore is because everybody that wanted it migrated to Linux already. So seriously, it already happened.

marcos ,

What is the objectively correct answer. I have no idea why people keep asking that question.

marcos ,

Ok, now I'm fully proposing a new standard, called IPv16! (Keeping with the tradition to jump over numbers.)

Also, it will be fully backwards compatible for a change! That solves the largest complaint from the holdouts!

How many people actually want fully on-site IT jobs?

I've been looking for a new job as a software developer. The huge majority of job listings I see in my area are hybrid or remote. I just had an introductory phone call with Vizio (which didn't specify the location type in the job listing). The recruiter told me that the job was fully on-site, which I told her was a deal breaker...

marcos ,

Instead, the people offering the largest salaries are mostly remote-only.

People that value your work value your work, I guess.

marcos ,

I have plenty of coworkers that are thrilled when we have an in-office event. And some that choose to go there to work every day.

I can't understand them, but well, it makes them happy.

marcos ,

It's perfectly possible to write nice to read bash, and to also make is safe to run and well-behaved on errors.

But all the three people that can do those (I'm not on the group) seem to be busy right now.

marcos ,

You are thinking about a soldering plate? Those go up to 300°C or some times 400°C.

A phone screen is fixed with hot glue, that starts to melt around 60°C.

marcos ,

It is parsing and querying into a huge statistical database.

Both done at the same time and in an opaque manner. But that doesn't make it any less of parsing and querying.

marcos ,

When you have 0 usage, serverless can be up to 100% cheaper than a VPS.

That difference propels its ROI into huge values, on business models that can scale up to sigle-digit dollars a month.

Meanwhile, the risk that you get a $100000 bill out of nowhere is always there.

marcos ,

On one hand pigeons are cute...

And I don't think there's anything on the other hand.

marcos ,

That would also be on the hand with the pigeons.

marcos ,

That [Yes] [Remind Me Later] thing is so 2007...

Nowadays Windows features all have a definitive [Off] option, that will fully hide the feature from view and only enable a daily message that pops under your mouse so you can turn it back on any time you want.

marcos ,

What happen when the repository is getting forked?

You get two code bases with different ownership.

That's a very practical license, that reflects the concept as it is practiced. It's probably the only one that doesn't come from an ivory tower.

marcos ,

The power supply connect with the motherboard in more than one place. If "the wire from the power supply plugs into the motherboard" is a thing, that may be your problem.

Unplug anything that is optional (that includes disks and stuff that you have more than 1, like maybe memory sticks) and try to power the computer. If it works, replug stuff one by one.

As BigMikeInAustin said, remove everything and plug it again. I'd add to get a paint brush and clean stuff a bit in between if it's dusty. Make sure to clean plugs and contacts, try not to clean electronic components.

Try to remove the board's battery for a few minutes and turn the computer on again. Some times that's enough.

Also, turn the computer on for a minute or two, turn it off, unplug everything, and touch the surfaces to see if they are hot. Try not to touch any printed circuit board.

marcos ,

But we need dynamic types!

...hold my beer...

Account suspended

Browsing Reddit at work like I've literally done every work day for the last six years, suddenly Reddit won't let me vote. Says my account has been suspended, but all I have to do is reset my password, using the email address I have on file. I don't have one. Can't get the email to reset the password, can't add an email now. I...

marcos ,

So, that's confirmed, tartigrads suck at playing violins.

marcos ,

No, we didn't. It wasn't remotely close.

marcos ,

All the noise I see is from people insisting that Rust developers are noisy, and their favorite language is much better types-don't-solve-bugs-undefined-behavior-is-fine-and-memory-errors-are-not-a-problem.

Actual Rust developers have been silent for years.

marcos ,

The court is useless, and it's by design.

Yeah, people repeating it for the world to hear is good, not bad. But a useful version of that court isn't something viable.

marcos ,

Ah, come-on, why do you think Eliza could do that 60 years ago?

(It couldn't. It's at most 40 years old technology, and way more likely just 30. Even though you could program Eliza to do something like this, it would be way too specific for any use.)

marcos ,

It's the kind of thing you would see at the 90s.

The 60s had room-sized computers that were busy calculating payroll.

marcos ,

Application specific buffers are the first thing I disable on emacs. The OS one isn't just integrated with every other normal piece of software, it's also more powerful and easier to use.

... at least on my Linux, YMMV.

I'm so tired of hearing about US police brutality and China being authoritarian. Why does it feel like everyone is a hypocrite here? Where are the posts about Chinese protests and police brutality?

I bet if the kind of things happening in the US happened in China, I wouldn't be able to stop hearing about it. I mean, people are still criticizing the Tiananmen Square massacre, and hasn't anything happened since then? It's like still making conspiracy theories about Kennedy's assassination or 9/11, those are old news.

marcos ,

Full tanker mode, engage!

But yeah, you won't see any of that on legitimate Chinese press.

You know that China is currently engaging in 2 different large-scale genocides, right? Or that they crushed (very literally) an entire city-worth of protests in Hong Kong just about 5 years ago, right? People don't talk about those because people outside of China don't spend their days criticizing China, and people inside China don't spend any time criticizing China.

If Reddit had a soul/conscience, I think it was us, and we're all on Lemmy now...

As a little background, I didn't actively use Reddit for months following the blackout. I still barely stop in over there and if I do I'm never logged in our contributing to the communities there (where I was previously a daily poster/commenter)....

marcos ,

Many groups left, lemmy was actually a minoritarian destination.

And lots and lots of bots came. Almost immediately. It was weird looking how all the people left and yet the amount of stuff there stayed the same.

marcos ,

I guess discord was the most popular one.

People talked about a few more at the time, there were some table running around telling where your subreddit went. But I really don't remember them.

marcos ,

The other half are about useful things, like what to do next, how your interfaces will look like, and "if you need help, just tell me, I can escalate it".

marcos ,

"Focus time" is the name of the meeting.

marcos , (edited )

That *++ operator from C is indeed confusing.

Reminds me of the goes-to operator: --> that you can use as:

while(i --> 0) {
marcos ,

The sheer number of people that do not expect a joke on this community... (Really, if you are trying to learn how to program pay attention to the one without the Humor on the name, not here.)

Well, I guess nobody expects.

marcos ,

Hum... Not long ago the local police here arrested a gang specialized in stealing concrete mixers from construction sites.

marcos ,

Global South

Yeah, right. How is Europe's food security going nowadays?

marcos ,

At least we won’t die of hunger.

The powerful among you won't die of hunger.

marcos ,

Hum, you won't do that either. The people that will have the food will also have all the guns, and they are not eager to go shooting each other.

Collapse is not as action-packed as it happens in movies. (Unless it's about toilet paper shortage in the US, it seems. WTF is up with that?)

marcos ,

That R&D budget means reddit has thousands of people working on software engineering. That's some 1/10 of the headcount of the likes of Microsoft and Google.

Even the sales and marketing line, although it should be the largest one by a huge margin, I fail to see where reddit is spending it. Have you ever seen a reddit ad?

marcos ,

All the time

It's always good to have my personal bubble burst, thanks.

So yeah, they should be spending a lot of money on that line. Looks like they are.
