@actuallyautistic Do y'all know if it's an autistic trait to be super skeptical of stuff? Like, for example, my parents watch some questionable "health" people on YouTube, and when they show me a video from said people, I can tell IMMEDIATELY that they are grifters in it for money. Idk what gives it away but it's like a flashing warning sign in my brain.

I wonder if it has to do with social influence and the effects of charisma/agreeableness that NDs might not fall for.

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic I’m not autistic, I have ADHD though, and neurodivergent people have that justice thing, so this might be a spinoff of that. Your nervous system or subconscious or whatever is picking up on the scam, and you have a noticeable reaction to it.

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic Maybe, but I tend to overspend for dopamine hits (Don’t laugh, but at least I try to do that spending on stuff that I need for the household, like paper towels and cat food for example.)

So for me, I don’t think advertising motivates me to buy specific products, except food sometimes. Those things will trigger food cravings like crazy. I avoid them so I’m not ordering pizza at 9 PM lol

But I definitely think the constant advertising makes me want to spend money on something/anything.

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic NOOO!! my brother was super smart, he had this amazing skill of being able to explain complex overwhelming things in a way that make them easy to understand.

He made $350,000 a year at his job and back in the housing market crash when everyone was getting laid off he was actually getting promoted he was like good at his job.

He also sent me an article about toxoplasmosis and told me it was bullshit. I said what do you mean it’s bullshit? He said “It’s not real.” Bro it doesn’t matter if you believe in it or not, it’ll get you. Wash your hands after scooping cat boxes wtf.

He was a republican and a trumper until the insurrection. The trumper part was shocking (we were no or low contact the last 10 years of his life except for a few months after our mom died) but the toxoplasmosis comment made sense after I saw he sent money to that choad’s campaign.

@WhiteCatTamer @AutumnWitch @chevalier26 @actuallyautistic and this is exactly why I don’t put my credit cards on my phone. If I could just pay with my fingerprint I would be so screwed lol if I have to actually get up and go find my bag, it’s probably not gonna happen.

@samhainnight @chevalier26 @actuallyautistic I love this about us! This is probably why I haven’t had Covid yet, I am diligent about wearing a mask because almost no one else does. And I don’t care what anyone thinks about that. I haven’t had Covid yet because of that.

@punishmenthurts @chevalier26 @actuallyautistic so I just found out yesterday that when I call my doctor’s office and sit on hold, in between abusively loud hold music they also play ADS.

I’m so offended by this, I don’t call them because of the abusively loud hold music so I didn’t know this was happening until they asked me if I was also bothered by the ads. (And they are only trying to correct this issue after two years of me complaining after they confirmed other people had a problem with it too and I told them that having a phone system neurodivergent people can’t use is a violation of section 504 of the rehabilitation act of 1973.)

YES I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE ADS THAT’S RIDICULOUS. ** if anyone is still reading this who can give me any tips, I would love to be able to tell her that the ads are bad for neurodivergent people therefore playing them while we are on the phone makes it inaccessible. Maybe I could make them go away. I think it’s just stuff telling us to get screened for breast cancer, and to get colonoscopies, but if it’s literally trying to sell things I’m going to use the people with ADHD overspent example.

To make someone sit through an ad when they are sick waiting on hold to speak with someone in their doctors office is cruelty. You guys, if she tells me that I can subscribe to an ad free experience with a monthly fee I am opting out of all of it and going full woo woo.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @figstick @histodons @academicchatter @academiccommunity @academicsunite @israel @palestine they probably copied all the phones of all the students they arrested as well.

My brother was arrested almost 10 years ago now and the Salem New Hampshire police applied for a search warrant for his phone, but they didn’t wait for it they went through it first. They did obtain the search warrant, but he filed a lawsuit because they went through the phone first. He was a financial advisor And he was concerned that they were able to get into his Fidelity stuff and see communications with clients.

They ended up paying him $30,000. They were really mad about it he thought they were gang stalking him after.

@histodons

Cultural history class this week includes the bicycle boom of the 1890s.

Newspapers from this period are filled with the complaints of men who say bicycles ruined their marriages, since wives only care to ride and no longer tend to their "duties."

The Rev. Thomas Gregory saw the bike as a threat to his parishioners' intellect and health.

"It annihilates the reading habit. The libraries are deserted. It is a menace to domestic virtues. It breaks up and destroys the home."

@xankarn @histodons yes I recently learned that they used to say women had “bicycle face” which was like resting bitch face.

Men didn’t get accused of having bicycle face, only women, as a way to shame women away from using bicycles
