Top 150 ranked in world on Company of Heroes 1v1 a long time ago lol. Got to play against some of the #1's - one of them left to join the South Korean military I heard. Got stomped but was fun.
I was pretty damn good at C&C Generals: Zero Hour back in the day. Damn I wish they remastered that game.
Was ranked on global leaderboards in Dota for a brief moment, too. Top 1%, but never close to the 0.1%.
My favorite moment in gaming was playing a sniper in Red Orchestra in a large 64 player game. Huge map. All game I'm sniping people left and right. Not dying once. Meanwhile throughout the game, like 30 minutes, the enemy sniper is equally decimating my team's ranks. I was hunting for him the entire game to no avail. Then, while prone I crest this ridgeline to scout a valley below and as I pan my scope to look all the way down toward the other side of my ridgeline, I see the other sniper lock with me at Exactly. The Same. Time.
We both fire.
And since Red Orchestra actually tries to simulate ballistics, we both hit each other and die.
We're last minute people, maybe a week in advance without air travel, a month with. A family friend just invited us to join them on a vacation NOVEMBER 2025. That seems bonkers to me!...
I never watched the old stuff. I enjoyed the campy and quirky scifi romp that peaked with the 10/11 doctors, but there are certainly long stretches of pretty dull episodes, I admit. There are many episodes that I just love and tried to make note of through my last watch through.
It doesn't take itself too seriously and I like that. It's also like gateway scifi for people not normally too into the genre.
Like most tyrants, they purge critical minds and leave yes men. It increasingly skews their perception of reality and leaves them to think they're far smarter than they really are. Putin is so fucked lol.
Ah so put the people who routinely cause regional instability from Syria to Ukraine and deny climate change back... Surely this will help with immigration! lol.
That we'd all be better off if we accepted our own fallibility. That we are not perfect little robots, and as a result more tolerance and forgiveness in the world is necessary.
Back in the day there existed Current TV and before Vice documentaries were a thing there was Vanguard — out of which came some awesome investigative journalists. One of the pieces they did was From Russia, With Hate which documented the rising neo-nazi anti-immigrant sentiment in Russia. In essence we knew Russia was a shit-hole then, and it's of course an earlier stepping-stone to compare to in terms our own nation's direction.
Yes and no. They've since lost global support for their actions; in an unprecedented move they are now being closely investigated for war crimes in a state of the world where such courts want to maintain impartiality to sustain their verdicts against Russia in Ukraine. To me it seems pretty clear that the Biden administration wants nothing to do with Israel but is only willing to follow the polls of public sentiment as opposed to take an aggressive stance ahead of where the public is at.
In this respect, Hamas succeeded. Israel over-stepped and committed the equivalent of 30, 40, perhaps 50+ October 7ths. The widespread recognition that Israel is a far-right nationalist government and Bibi is trying to desperately cling to power and avoid conviction in ongoing criminal trials domestically will, hopefully, have serious repercussions in the long-term. Domestically, Israelis may also slowly be coming to the realization that their Democracy isn't so Democratic.
Both Netanyahu and Putin are closely watching, and actively trying to influence, these US elections.
Although Lemmy's userbase is quite large,it still is small enough that I do often see the same people in comment sections. It feels though, that I should recognise more names, because I can only remember around 5 individual ones.
The main reasons I've seen from vegans for not eating meat seem to be all about the morality of eating a sentient animal, the practices of the modern meat industry, and the environmental impact of it. And don't have anything to do with the taste of meat....
Sometimes on Lemmy these seem like the only jobs that actually exist, but I'm sure there's a lot of people here with different and unusual lines of work.
I can't speak for other engineering trades or even other software degrees from other universities but I know my degree was ABET accredited (US) for what it's worth. A massive chunk of our education was instilling the engineer's mindset in terms of architecture, design, test-driven, development QA/QC, and coordination and integration with other specialties in the system. I really do wish there was a protection over the title, for I agree some may call themselves software engineers but were never actually trained in the engineering design process.
Basically as the title says. We have semi frequent power outages where I live. The noise machine in my daughter's room goes out and wakes her up. If I were to buy a USB powered one, plug it into a power bank like one of those 10000ma ones you get for charging cell phones, would it have continuous power. Basically like a cheap...
Ukraine on Sunday said its forces hit an ultra-modern Russian warplane stationed on an air base nearly 600 kilometers (370 miles) from the front lines, after its Western allies allowed Kyiv to use their weapons for limited strikes inside Russia....
Lord Cameron said while he would not support a major ground offensive in the Gazan city of Rafah, the UK would not copy US plans to stop some arms sales....
"Just to simply announce today that we will change our approach on arms exports, it would make Hamas stronger and it would make a hostage deal less likely," he adds.
... But it would SAVE civilians and force Israel to reevaluate their blatantly low standard for collateral damage.
That Cameron simply thinks "hammering more aid" into Gaza can offset the destruction of 500-2000lb bombs in densely-populated civilian centers needs to be called out head-on by reporters and activists.
At the end of the day, Israel has committed the equivalent of well over 20 if not 30 October 7ths in terms of the death and destruction to innocent civilian lives. REGARDLESS of Hamas' actions, it speaks more on Israel that they don't value the alleged human shields Hamas supposedly uses at every strike Israel makes.
For decades, Joe Biden has proudly declared that he is a Zionist, and he has repeated that claim since Hamas’s 7 October attacks on Israel. But for the student anti-war protests gripping the US, the words “Zionist” and “Zionism” have become a watchword – pejorative and emblematic of the violent state policies driving...
The best thing to come out of all this is the veil finally being removed and a global conversation of separating antisemitism from anti-Israeli nationalism. It's been so tiring seeing Israel conflate the two for decades.
Having a wanton disregard for civilian life, shutting down news agencies... They've become the very thing they fought against nearly a century ago.
A familiar horror reached Pooja Kanda first on social media: There had been a sword attack in London. And then Kanda, who was home alone at the time, saw a detail she dreaded and knew all too well....
Last I checked, physicians must treat both symptoms and diseases simultaneously. E.g., the Shock. The bleeding. The excess fever.
Similarly there's no reason both cannot be tackled simultaneously here as well; for the root cause is often far more difficult to address than treating symptoms.
So yes, address the root causes such as:
Reducing societal stress (reduce work weak, lower socioeconomic inequality)
Expand and improve baseline education levels
Provide Universal healthcare with free access to mental health including therapy.
... But also address the symptoms, which means that when someone does inevitably fall through the cracks, they're not given free and easy access to gun that is lethally more effective than a knife.
Right? I've long said that Democrats should just pivot and say, "Okay you don't want to work on getting guns out of the hands of criminals? Okay whatever. You agree part of this is a result of mental health? Okay, then let's pass Universal healthcare with guaranteed access to therapy and more."
I'm fully on-board with a national gun ban and a complete change of the 2nd amendment, but I know we are also decades away from that realistically. Boomers and GenX will have to die off first. Can't teach old dogs new tricks.
I know most people that were on reddit at the time are fully aware of this and won't be surprised but don't dismiss the findings out of hand. It's important that studies are being conducted and the fact that the finding match our lived experience is still noteworthy.
If you ever want to observe or engage (be ready for the pile-up) with these same folks, r/ShitPoliticsSays contains the exact same user-base of extremists. These are dyed-in-the-wool folks because they use this as a launching-point for brigading other subs comment threads. Lots of Canadian righties there, too. The only credit I'll give is unlike r/conservative that they never censored so you could pretty much discuss and test argumentative points to your heart's content.
Of course I still think a sizable chunk of these folks operate in discord channels and astroturfed Sanders subs (especially the 2020 election), ChapoTrapHouse, etc.
My wife's father is still peddling that toxic masculinity bullshit on his grandson, saying...to our 1-year-old... To toughen it up.
My wife about lost it on him. Now that was to our son but for our daughter it would be no different and it's a reflection of her childhood.
Being emotionally unattached, uncomfortable with crying, and being incapable saying sorry and admitting you're wrong are simply massive. Kids are kids but they have a keen sense of justice and parents should empower them to stand up for themselves and be proud of them for exposing you as a hypocrite... Not beat them with a belt...
And for goodness sake, play with your kid. She wants to play dolls? Dress you up? Paint your nails? Tea time? By god you do it! If she wants to play with army men (they make army gals, too), go for it!
Being a parent is like one part being a therapist, one part being the fence to the boundaries of exploration, and one part being The Doctor or some superhero in your child's eyes capable of making magic and excitement happen. Fucking incredible, honestly.
