The extra extra fun part is to then offer you the opportunity to pay for bigger storage!

lath ,

Another article speaks about Windows 11 requiring a Microsoft account to install it, no longer supporting local accounts.

lath ,

But can they neuter it to make it near useless without a Microsoft account tagging along?

lath ,

As said in other comments, perhaps that is the point.

lath ,

Congratulations! Remember to have extra diapers available at all times.

lath ,

When's the dress coming back? Toga, kilt, long tunic etc. The balls desire airy freedom!

lath ,

That's an attempt to positively spin our growing incapability of creating and maintaining an intimate long-term relationship.

Wanting to be single sounds better than socially incompetent.

lath ,

This is the general direction of my point.

You have more fun on your own. You've only had shit relationships. You've mastered faking social interactions. Congratulations! You're socially inept.

Or in other words, you want it, but couldn't have it, so you gave up on it and make due with superficial feel-good.

Whatever the reasons we might lie to ourselves with, the inability to form meaningful connections remains. Just don't mistake giving up on it for the option not existing at all.

lath ,

I absolutely believe we can be happy whether on our own in some form of relationship.

But my approached topic is about our ability to hold unto long-term relationships. If we could, i believe we would choose intimacy with another person over the peacefulness of solitude.

You say it's tiring to be around other people and that's fine, but objectively it's still a personal failing.
If you feel attacked, it's because you also recognize it as such.

You're happy where you are and it's great, but isn't it you're making your happiness because you wouldn't find it otherwise?

lath ,

Okay. Thank you for clearing it up.

lath ,

That other than a niche we specialize in, we're pretty fucking dumb at everything else.

lath ,

As I've seen it said many times on Lemmy for many nostalgia moments and am also quite surprised no one said to to you yet (they probably got tired of repeating it..), people yearning for the good old times are the privileged white patriarchy class.

Be ashamed, be very ashamed. Tsk. Tsk.

lath ,

How dare you bring reason and nuance to the conversation? You damn centrist! It's you and people like you that embolden the right in their shenanigans! Only by not tolerating this intolerant symbolism can we rid ourselves of these fascist cults!

Or so the story goes...

lath ,

Also, the explorer indexer at the very least takes note of what files it has stored.

lath ,

You can die of a heart attack if you overdo it.

lath ,

I believe there's a bunch of stock bros thinking "I'm gonna be that guy!" and going full speed ahead towards making it happen.

lath ,

Neat stuff.

That part’s wild to me, when people are like “This villain in your story seems to have said and done bad things? So that means you agree with them, yes?” No! Of course not! It’s the literal villain in the story, man!

But there is no utilitarian point of art. It exists to express ideas and to tell truth. I think maybe a lot of people get upset because from their point of view, they are paying money, and they have this relationship where it’s like “If it’s not giving me what I wanted out of this transaction, then it’s bad.”

lath ,

A thread of the problem is likely the publisher/developer conflict of interest. When the two can't come to an agreement, the end result usually fails horribly in both aspects.

lath ,

As often told in online circles, with violence.

lath ,

Their job is to make the sale. Anything beyond that is not their problem.

lath ,

Yes, but how many sales representative can afford to think beyond having their sales numbers up? They might lose their job either way so long term company welfare isn't really that important to them.

lath ,

Because you're getting mad at the symptom, not the disease.
Without management endorsing it, would sales be doing something like that and still keep their jobs?

How to work with someone that regularly arrives as the wrong answer?

I work with a person that went presented with a problem, works through it and arrives at the wrong solution. When I have them show me the steps they took, it seems like they interpret things incorrectly. This isn't a language barrier, and it's not like they aren't reading what someone wrote....

lath ,

Though language is an effective means of communication, it's not perfect.

To use an example, there was a meme about a literature professor quoting from a book and telling students what the author meant by mentioning the curtains being blue in a scene.
As they go on and on about the melancholy and sadness the author was known to experience at the time, Samuel L Jackson busts in through the door and yells "The color was blue because the curtains were blue, motherfucker!"

Or am I remembering it wrong? Anyway, language is open to interpretation and as such, people will interpret it openly.

r/The_Donald helped radicalize users into far-right identities and discourse – Active users on r/The_Donald increasingly used white nationalist vocabularies in their comments within three months. ( journals.sagepub.com )

I know most people that were on reddit at the time are fully aware of this and won't be surprised but don't dismiss the findings out of hand. It's important that studies are being conducted and the fact that the finding match our lived experience is still noteworthy.

lath ,

People are emotional creatures. And in a place where a type of view is being actively promoted, it's very easy to align those emotions in that specific direction.

An example here on Lemmy is ACAB. It's anti-police and it posts the bad stuff that's meant to show ACAB. They might say it shows the truth and people going through All, watching the videos and reading the articles might start thinking, huh cops seem bad. They keep going, read statistics and articles posted by other commenters and driven by this information, they eventually end up saying ACAB. Suddenly, anyone not saying ACAB is complicit, an enemy, a troll, part of the problem etc.

It's the same for any politically charged social hub. It's not just people who had the views but lacked a place to vent them, but people who are ignorant on the subject and are radicalized through emotional outrage.
Emotional opinions are the hardest to change because the investment in them is the greatest.

lath ,

Technically, it is private. As in privately shared. Not just anyone can get your data. It's a select club.
Other than the employees handling it, it's mostly pay per view.

Will I ever be seen as truly British?

My family immigrated to the UK from Poland when I was six. I'm 20 now, speak much better English than Polish and feel like this is my land/culture. However I have a Polish first and last name, Polish passport and "unique" accent everyone picks up on, so despite this I'm usually perceived as an outsider. It makes me really sad...

lath ,

Numerous experiences in my life have proven to me that this is partly accurate and op has grounds to be worried.

I cannot count the times i was lost in thought in a public space and someone interrupted me with "the fuck you looking at?" or "is something wrong?" type of questions.

People notice. You notice. Sometimes it's ignored, but enough times you need to unscramble your thoughts to answer a "the fuck you looking at?" out of nowhere.

Having a phone is the modern excuse. Just stare at the screen or pretend you're scrolling.

Yet, having a low self-esteem will make one anxious in a public setting quite unreasonably. And while hard to achieve all the time, an answer is in fact to stop caring about what other people think. It does work.

Then there's the paladin who has you smitten just by standing there.

Step 1: Manually shave your entire body with a razor to induce hair growth.

Step 2: Get fat.

Step 3: Get fit while staying fat.

Step 4: Once woolly enough, go get naked in the woods and ambush unsuspecting women*

Separate from the pun, seemingly overly aggressive mountain lions that stroll out in the open are usually just mothers scaring you away from their cubs.
They're kind of lying about wanting to attack you.

Mountain lions that do want to attack you usually do so before you even realize they're there.

Unless you're visiting wholesome communities, the more insistent of posters are generally doomers. They see the bad in everything and make it the main characteristic that should be judged and frowned upon, regardless of circumstance.

lath ,

Not with that attitude!
You gotta believe for it to work, my woolsome friend.

Everyone loves an inspiring success story. Have at it!

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don't come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don't really get upset by it...

lath ,

Some ideas on the topic.

I've only met vegans on social media. The vocal minority preaching vegan lifestyle is delusional. Outside of it, it's still corporations doing their best to make a profit. The regular person just eats quietly and lives their life.
The requirements and costs are pittance only in their idealistic view of the world. "If only people would just .." No. They won't. We are where we are because people don't.
Everyone wants the world to go their way and we kill each other for it.

As an omnivore animal, I eat what my budget allows. Sometimes it's meat, sometimes it's vegetables and sometimes it's cardboard.
Just like the wild life, eating plastic bags because they taste yummy.
Social media vegans seem to be either the ones that can afford to be picky or can't afford anything else.

Simple truth is that life can always be better, people can always do more and most of us simply don't want to.

lath ,

The woes of true believers.

lath ,

Caved in and bought the Kotors. Nostalgia boomed.

lath ,

Probably unlucky.

Try to recall whether you acted uncomfortable in your initial interaction with them. The first one due to surprise of them being the first male social worker working on your case. The second due to the unpleasantness with the former.
The first impression usually sets the tone of a conversation, so there may have been a misunderstanding which then solidified into prejudice.

Or they were jaded asshole. Who knows.

lath ,

They should leave.

As it stands, their home is not a safe cradle anymore. If they see no future for themselves there, then there's no reason not to start anew somewhere else.

Yes, that would mean that Israel will win, the evil tyrants will have succeeded in their plans of complete domination. Welcome to the rest of the world!

Right now, Palestinians are dying for nothing. They lose in every realistic scenario. They have no real allies, no real government, no real army, no real desire to become independent. They simply are there.

Yet they can ask to go or be helped to go anywhere else and live and equal or better life. Organizations love sending migrants anywhere these days.

Getting rid of Palestine as a concept, as an open-air prison, is the best option for Palestinians right now. But forcing two people who hate each other to live together is not the peaceful or proper solution, it's setting them apart.

US likes Israel being there. Don't like it, convince US to stop. Can't do that, move the Palestinians.

If you want to save the Palestinians, that's the best thing to do. If you want to be on the right side of ethics, go ahead and keep the Palestinians in that futureless prison while you rage at Israel for being nazis. That'll show them!

If your home is bad for you, move.
