Article is being reported for bias, and yeah, thecradle.co is rated as being left of center.

I'm leaving this up because Israel has been caught using white phosphorus before.

Years ago in Lebanon:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/2023/12/11/israel-us-white-phosphorus-lebanon/

And just recently, elsewhere in Gaza:

https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20231013-amnesty-israel-military-units-striking-gaza-with-white-phosphorus-artillery-rounds/

Edit Source is depricated by Wikipedia which is good enough for me to remove it.

LOL:

"How risky was the AstraZeneca vaccine?

Compared to other scenarios

Death from giving birth - 1 in 12,500

Chance of under-50s getting blood clot with low platelets from AstraZeneca vaccine - 1 in 50,000

Death from receiving general anaesthetic - 1 in 100,000"

Death from giving birth number seems awfully low, must be UK numbers. ;)

Yup. US death rate is 32.9 per 100,000 so... 1 in 3,039.51

Oh, it gets WORSE:

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/hestat/maternal-mortality/2021/maternal-mortality-rates-2021.htm

"In 2021, the maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black (subsequently, Black) women was 69.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, 2.6 times the rate for non-Hispanic White (subsequently, White) women (26.6) (Figure 1 and Table). Rates for Black women were significantly higher than rates for White and Hispanic women."

1 in 1,430.62 for black women. This is why abortion rights are so important in the US.

You would think, right? But HiFi Rush was lauded as one of the best games last year and was highly successful, even being ported to PS5 and Switch at this point, so why close them?

Doing the conversion, that's about $600 US.

jordanlund Mod ,

You can't really say that the people who died on 9/11 were or were not transphobic though.

I'm sorry, but this premise is absolute bullshit I'm removing it on grounds of misinformation.

Trump raised the prospect of banning TikTok in 2020, some three years before the actions in Gaza:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Trump%E2%80%93TikTok_controversy

Biden banned TikTok from federal devices in 2022, a full year before the Gaza issue:

https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/tiktok-ban-biden-government-college-state-federal-security-privacy-rcna63724

Regardless, this is also internal US News and has no reason to be in World News.

Largely it's going to depend on who your audience is. If you're writing for an American audience, use American conventions. British audience, British conventions.

Things to be aware of:

Date formats:

US: 5/6/2024
British/India/Australia: 6/5/2024

Currency formats:

US: $1,234.56
Europe reverses that, so €1.234,56
https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/trip-planning/european-numbers
India: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_numbering_system

That's above and beyond things like Metric conversion which the US largely does not use except in soda bottles. 1, 2 and 3 liter bottles.

Spelling:

In the US, it's "color", in the UK it's "colour". There are LOTS of examples like this.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_spelling_differences

jordanlund ,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Thank god "aluminum" is the same in print either way. :)

jordanlund ,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

But then there's also the European standard of "6 May 2024". ;)

India starts getting odd with large amounts though which is why I linked to the Wiki, I can't wrap my brain around how it works.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_numbering_system

"The terms lakh or 1,00,000 (one hundred thousand, written as 100,000 outside the Indian subcontinent) and crore or 1,00,00,000[1] (ten million, written as 10,000,000 outside the subcontinent) are the most commonly used terms in Indian English to express large numbers in the system."

Soo...

"lakh: 150,000 rupees in India is referred to as "1.5 lakh rupees", which is written as 1,50,000 rupees;

crore: 30,000,000 (thirty million) rupees is referred to as "3 crore rupees", which is written as 3,00,00,000 rupees with commas at the thousand, lakh, and crore places."

I guess if you grew up with it, it makes perfect sense.

I used to sell books and this elderly couple came up to the counter saying they were buying it as a Christmas present.

So I told them "Hey, it's not my place to say what is or is not a good Christmas present, but before I sell it to you, could I get you to just flip the pages, randomly stick your finger in, and start reading?"

They thought I was kidding, but they did it...

"OH MY GOD!"

"Yeah..."

"OH MY GOD!"

Better they find out then than AFTER I sold it to them!

I guess it depends on what you mean by "genuine"?

The US, federally, is a single country, but socially and regionally, it's 50 separate states.

Nobody is going to confuse the overall social climate in my home state of Oregon with, say, Texas, or even our own neighbor, Idaho.

jordanlund ,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

I don't think you can have a single image of America. What applies in one place doesn't apply somewhere else.

The Oregon Tourism department put together a wonderful campaign showing how different we are, you couldn't run this even across the border in Washington or Northern California:

It's actually worse than that... I went looking for a list, I found this:

https://www.vox.com/2015/5/26/8660001/prison-jail-cost

"Forty-three states allow inmates to get charged for "room and board" — the cost of their own imprisonment. Thirty-five states charge inmates for at least some medical expenses. Taken together, at least 49 states have a law on the books that authorizes at least one of the two. (Hawaii, as well as DC, doesn't have statutes that explicitly address pay-to-stay.)"

First-time home buyers: how did you feel about getting a mortgage?

An option for me to buy a house has come up very suddenly and it seemed like a good idea at first - but I look at a mortgage and think "that's 15 years I'll spend paying back, at absolute minimum. Probably more like 25 years" - how can I possibly plan that far in advance?...

jordanlund ,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

30 year mortgage at 52 and 1 heart attack... "The mortgage will outlive me!"

OTOH... locked in $2,000/mo. housing payment for 30 years... It's already paying off as the rent on our old place is $2,300/mo. now.

Gaza: Israel deliberately militarizes civilian objects, turns schools into military bases ( euromedmonitor.org )

Palestinian Territory - As part of its genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, ongoing for the seventh month now, the Israeli army has militarized civilian objects, including schools and educational facilities. Israel’s turning of these facilities into military bases is in flagrant violation of international law and the rules of war....

Being reported as an unreliable source without supporting documents, and I have to admit being conflicted here.

On the one hand:

https://www.ngo-monitor.org/ngos/euro-med-human-rights-monitor/

Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor (Euro-Med Monitor) consistently spreads blood libels and conspiracy theories about Israel, and accuses Israel of “apartheid,” genocide,” “ethnic cleansing,” “collective punishment,” and “war crimes.”

On the OTHER hand:

https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/ngo-monitor-bias/

"NGO Monitor has faced criticism and has been labeled a right-wing pro-Israeli group. For example, in 2013, a member of NGO Monitor was caught editing their own Wikipedia page, which is not allowed. Wikipedia then banned him as an editor. Further, the founder Gerald Steinburg worked for the Israeli government after the formation of the NGO, a seemingly obvious conflict of interest."

I'm tempted to remove it pending a less biased source, however in this case I'll leave it for now with the "pillar of salt" warning and a note that everyone sucks here.

It's less to do with these companies and more to do with their consumers.

Could Coke and Pepsi cut plastic waste by switching back to glass bottles? Sure, but their shitty customers would just increase GLASS waste.

Changing the substance of the waste isn't going to miraculously decrease waste. You have to change consumer habits to do that.

jordanlund Mod ,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

It's still up to consumers to dispose of or recycle the trash correctly. Coke and Pepsi can't do it for them.

jordanlund ,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar
