I really don't understand why they still use those heavy lead acid ones. Couldn't you at least get a lighter lithium battery if it has to be a separate circuit?

jonne ,

I don't think anyone is talking about the miracles when they refer to the historical Jesus.

Electric Aviation is already better than you think - Volts with David Roberts ( www.volts.wtf )

Electric vehicles that can take off and land vertically, but then fly like a plane, are already being sold and used by hospitals and shipping companies. These vehicles have 5 batteries that give it a range of over 350 miles using current battery technology, though the batteries are intended to be swapped over the life of the...

jonne ,

If you replaced every vehicle with an electric airplane the electricity needed would be astronomical.

jonne ,

It's not even copyright laws, it's everyone insisting on exclusive contracts. There's no reason a piece of content couldn't be on Netflix and Disney+ at the same time. It would be a lot better for consumers if streamers could compete on price and service instead of which content they managed to create/licence.

jonne ,

All of those things already exist. Typically it's just a Plex server running on a cloud service.

jonne ,

You pay like $5/Mo for the content of all streaming services and more instead of the $500/Mo it would cost to subscribe to each of them individually. Plus you're not taking any legal risk as a customer.

jonne ,

Yep, you choose between Spotify, Tidal, etc based on price and how well the app works, not because one service has the band you like while the other one doesn't (not that music streaming isn't its own shitshow for other reasons, of course).

jonne ,

I'm guessing banging your employees counts as work to this guy.

jonne ,

But in order to get the money for those programs, especially if their effect is to lower the workload for police, you should get the money from the police budget, otherwise it's just wasted money. Are you just going to keep giving the NYPD a billion dollars a year to do nothing?

'Becoming a totalitarian state': UK judge on why he quit Hong Kong court ( www.bbc.com )

A high-profile British judge who resigned from Hong Kong’s highest court last week has warned the city is “slowly becoming a totalitarian state” and judges are being compromised by an “impossible political environment created by China”....

jonne ,

Yeah, did he really think that the judiciary would stay independent after the Chinese decided they'd be the ones vetting which candidates could run for office?

jonne ,

If a cease-fire with a prisoner exchange was literally on the table but rejected by Israel, I'd pick the option where a bunch of innocent blood isn't spilled to secure a release.

jonne ,

Sounds better than whatever the fuck is happening now, yeah.

jonne ,

Now everyone will get to run Wordle!

jonne ,

You mean hosting your own crawler/indexer? That doesn't really sound like a thing you could do cost-effectively.

jonne ,

Yeah, I guess the P2P component sort of solves part of the issue I was imagining by distributing indexes and crawling. I was thinking that people were trying to run all of Google on a raspberry pi at home.

[US] I'm hesitating launching my own business because I'd lose health insurance for my family. What are my options?

I have everything pretty much ready to launch full time. Time, skills, customers, support from family. But I'd leave my current job behind and with it my family's health insurance for the foreseeable future. I can't afford any of the options I've seen. It's the one thing holding me back. Any ideas for affordable health insurance...

jonne ,

Could you do your startup in a different country?

jonne ,

Fwiw, I could still see it, so maybe it got restored.

jonne ,

The Atlantic is anything but left in general.

jonne ,

As they should, it was always a terrible plan. The US should instead apply pressure (eg. no more bombs unless you let aid through) on Israel instead. This (and the air drops) was always a way to avoid having to do that.

jonne , (edited )

I didn't even mention the guy? Trump would've probably told Netanyahu to nuke Gaza. Either way you have genocide with both.

jonne ,

Israel is basically untouched except for like 2 tiny villages, wtf is he talking about. Everything's projection.

jonne ,

What did they lose?

jonne ,

There's a lot more need than pre-invasion levels. There was local agriculture in Gaza, functional bakeries, a water pipeline, electricity, etc.

Now all of those things need to be trucked in instead.

jonne ,

You're always supposed to use multiple methods regardless.

jonne ,

TIL China will kidnap people globally for saying the wrong thing.

jonne ,

Yeah, it's not like there's been a good track record in Latin America of socialism being allowed to be implemented. There's basically 2 countries you could call socialist, and both are sanctioned and under constant threat of regime change.

jonne ,

Eventually even those customers will look at alternatives too if there's only like 50 companies worldwide using it.

Philanthropist who gave $30M to U Manitoba condemns 'hateful' valedictory speech, university for allowing it ( www.cbc.ca )

The philanthropist behind the University of Manitoba's largest-ever personal donation — $30 million — has denounced a speech made by a valedictorian for medicine grads and admonished the university for letting it happen....

jonne ,

That's why philanthropy needs to be reigned in. It's just such people using money (that would've gone to taxes otherwise) dictating how society should be run, whether in academia, the arts, leisure or even policing.

If they paid this money in taxes, we'd all get a say what happens to the money (I know, that's mostly in theory, in reality the rich get to say what happens with that money too).

jonne ,

Yep, turbulence will affect any plane, it's not like things would've been different on an Airbus.

jonne ,

The EU takes pedestrians (and cyclists) in account for safety standards, the US doesn't.

jonne ,

You basically need to design the car so pedestrians bounce over the hood instead of going under. So you can still to an SUV, but can't really do a Ford F150 style front.

jonne ,

And Biden has been a Zionist since entering Congress. AIPAC probably didn't even have to pay him. His famous empathy doesn't extend to Palestiniens (or other people of colour).

US focused on hunting down Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, in bid to end Gaza war ( www.middleeasteye.net )

The United States is focused on tracking down Hamas's Gaza chief, Yahya Sinwar, amid a new push by the White House to help Israel declare "total victory" so it can bring an end to the war on Gaza, US officials have told Middle East Eye....

jonne ,

Yeah, if I was in Gaza those last 6 months I'd probably be looking to join any organisation that would give me a chance to kill some IDF soldiers of I was going to die anyway.

jonne ,

Largely depends on how many tourists have been there since, really.

Hundreds arrested, roads barricaded in New Caledonia as riots continue ( www.reuters.com )

SYDNEY, May 16 (Reuters) - Armed forces were protecting New Caledonia's two airports and port after a third night of violent riots that have killed four people, the Pacific Island's top French official said on Thursday morning, adding at least four alleged instigators were under house arrest....

jonne ,

I mean, it's treated like any département, no? If you move from Paris to Marseilles you get to vote in the local elections there as well.

jonne ,

Doesn't matter, the IDF is responsible for securing the convoys, and they're obviously not stopping civilians from doing this. Same as how the IDF won't stop settlers from burning down Palestinian homes, but will step in if anyone fights back.

jonne ,

Not even sure which one you're referring to, but I agree regardless.

jonne ,

Maybe I'm reading too much between the lines here, but it seems to me he was homeless in France.

Then again, the wanted picture is obviously from before he went on the run, so I guess he just lost the genetic lottery on that one.

jonne ,

Yep, note that the number of deaths officially has been stuck at 32000 for months now. It's not that Israel stopped bombing, it's because they destroyed all the hospitals where the counting for official numbers is done. The actual death toll is probably already way past 100000.

jonne ,

COVID was killing a lot of medical personnel initially because they weren't using the right PPE and got infected with a large initial viral load.

jonne ,

Or report on American war crimes.

jonne ,

They'll never learn. They told us to bang pots and pans for them, and now a few years later they're still underpaid and overworked the world over. Same goes for every other 'essential worker'.

jonne ,

Damn, I thought it would be doping.

jonne ,

Does anyone know where you can get the Thunderbird branded package?

jonne ,

I don't think they have an endowment or anything like US universities have, so it would basically just be cancelling collaborative projects and stuff like that.
