“When It Rains It Pours” is a song written and recorded by American country music singer Luke Combs. It is his second single release overall, and it appears on his 2017 debut album This One’s for You.

https://genius.com/Luke-combs-when-it-rains-it-pours-lyrics

Luke Combs’ “When It Rains It Pours” is undoubtedly one of the most feel-good country songs of the past decade. Combs’ distinct voice, combined with the catchy melody and relatable lyrics, make it nearly impossible to resist belting out the chorus whenever it comes on the radio. But what is the true story behind the hit song? In this article, we’ll explore the meaning behind the lyrics and the events that led to its creation.

This lighthearted anthem finds Luke Combs singing of riding a lucky steak after getting dumped.

Usually people think negatively when they hear the saying, "When It Rains It Pours." But Luke Combs had a different idea with his latest music video...

Luke Combs and Jordan Walker of Walker McGuire first met over beers at a bar in Nashville three years ago. The two budding artists were introduced by a mutual friend, songwriter Ray Fulcher, and shortly after their initial meeting they went on to write what would become Combs’ second No. 1 hit, “When It Rains It Pours.”

“Country Song” is a song by Bo Burnham that satirically mocks some of the common topics of modern country songs, including but not limited to:

  • Dirt roads
  • Cold beer
  • Blue jeans
  • Trucks
  • Belonging to the working class and blue-collar jobs
  • Relationships with Southern/“country” women

Edit: Added info below

I am a big fan of Bo Burnham’s unique and thought-provoking comedy. His songs often have deeper meanings hidden beneath their catchy tunes and witty lyrics. One song that particularly stands out to me is “Country Song” from his album “Make Happy” released in 2016.

As the song begins, Bo addresses the audience, acknowledging that country music often receives a bad reputation. He argues that country music can be just as artistic and meaningful as any other genre, highlighting iconic country artists like Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson. However, he criticizes the modern trend of what he refers to as “Stadium Country Music,” represented by artists like Keith Urban.

The song “Country Song (Pandering)” by Bo Burnham is a satirical commentary on the state of popular country music. In this song, Burnham parodies the formulaic and cliché themes often found in country songs, exposing the pandering nature of the genre. With witty lyrics and a catchy melody, Burnham uses humor to shed light on the lack of originality and authenticity in mainstream country music.

The lyrics of “Country Song (Pandering)” mock the overused tropes and stereotypes commonly found in country music. Burnham sings about trucks, beer, girls, and pickup lines, highlighting the predictable and formulaic nature of these themes. He cleverly utilizes wordplay and sarcasm to poke fun at the repetitive narratives often found in country songs, making his commentary on the genre both entertaining and thought-provoking.

As a musician, I’ve come across countless songs that have left a lasting impact on me. However, there is one particular song that holds a special place in my heart – “Eat It” by the New Jacks. I first heard this song during my teenage years, and its powerful lyrics and energetic beats resonated with me from the very first listen.

“Eat It” was the lyrical debut of MC Double M, also known as Eminem, and was released in 1988 when he was just sixteen years old. This song showcased his raw talent and set the stage for his later style of dense rhymes and intense wordplay. The New Jacks EP, which included this track, served as a launching pad for Eminem’s successful rap career.

As a fan of Rise Against, one song that has always resonated with me is “Hero of War” from their fifth album, Appeal to Reason (2008). This powerful track delves into the story of an Iraq war veteran reflecting on the realities and hardships he faced during his time serving. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the protagonist’s journey, and it’s no surprise that this song stands as one of Rise Against’s most politically charged and impactful songs when it comes to war.

https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-hero-of-war-by-rise-against-2/

Off of Rise Against’s fifth album Appeal to Reason, “Hero Of War” is about an Iraq war veteran looking back on the hardships he endured during the war. The song starts out with an army recruiter asking the protagonist, a potential recruit, to enlist. With promises of adventure and money, they do indeed sign up. At the end of the song, the enlistee, now a veteran, recalls with bitter irony the army recruiter’s promise that signing up would mean he could see the world.

Rise Against is definitely a politically motivated band and this song is easily one of their best/most vocal songs regarding war.

When asked by ARTISTdirect about having learned more about the Vietnam War through music, rather than history books, McIlrath replied with:

I was talking about the song, “Hero of War,” when I said that. It was written expressly with that idea in mind. It was a way to documenting what’s going on, like other artists documented for their generation and for generations to come. I felt it was a service to kids like me. “Fortunate Son” or “Ohio” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, which are huge hits today, were songs that I learned from. Mass media brought that song to my ears. It was a great way to remind Americans or others around the world what was going on at the time. There are not many songs serving that purpose in 2008 or talking about what’s going on during eight years of occupation in Iraq. That, combined with meeting active soldiers and retired soldiers at our shows and hearing those stories about what is going on on the ground amid all the bullshit, showed me the differences from what is really happening to what is happening in the news media. I just thought that this needed to go into a song. There needs to be more of these kinds of songs, so I figured, let’s write one.

Guitarist Zach Blair told Ultimate-Guitar.com about this multi-layered acoustic guitar song:

That was a song Tim (McIlrath, frontman) had in the studio and it was one of those things that were like it was his baby; it was his whole thing. It’s a brilliant song and it might raise a few eyebrows but I stand behind it a hundred percent. It will be when we do it live; when we do a lot of radio and we’re promoting the record, Tim and I do a lot of the acoustic songs. It first it was gonna be really bare bones, just one acoustic guitar line, but they started adding more things onto it. Such is the case: This band gets real layered sometimes and it’s always best to layer a lot and take away afterward. Yeah, that one got real layered; it was always just Tim sittin' there by himself just goin' for it.

https://genius.com/Rise-against-hero-of-war-lyrics

This song was inspired by the 2006 documentary The Ground Truth: After the Killing Ends, which focuses on soldiers' Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after returning home from war. The song tells the story of a guy who enlists in the military, figuring he'll be celebrated as a war hero after he does his duty. He ends up fighting overseas under horrific conditions, and ends up torturing a prisoner and killing a civilian under duress.

Cover by Zachary Stevenson: Love Me, I'm a Liberal LIVE (Phil Ochs) [04:28] https://youtu.be/8na8piim5Kk

Zachary Stevenson plays Love Me, I'm a Liberal at a Phil Ochs Song Night in Felton, CA

“Love Me, I’m A Liberal,” is a criticism of liberals, as liberals often superficially support things such as civil rights to appear compassionate, but actually reject any action that would upset the status quo. This song is Phil Ochs' demonstration of his hatred of the liberals, who he views as hypocritical.

In the final verse, the liberal narrator of the song establishes he used to be a socialist, but has now “grown older and wiser”, and rejected more radical left-wing politics in favor of liberalism. Liberalism is a political disposition which is opposed to, and not synonymous with, Leftism (socialism, communism, etc). The idea that liberalism is synonymous with Leftism is a recent phenomenon more or less specific to mainstream US politics since the widespread suppression of the radical Left in the 70s and 80s (as well as the spread of the global “neoliberal consensus” since the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the German Democratic Republic, and the capitalist reforms of China under Deng Xiaoping).

Essentially, the song is a critique of liberalism from a leftist perspective, using the satirized view point of a 60’s American liberal.

Jello Biafra and Mojo Nixon did a 90’s-themed updated version that can be found here.

It’s also worth noting that the tune of this song incorporates parts of the melody for the traditional song ‘Rosin the Bow.’ You can hear it very clearly in the first three lines of every verse.

https://genius.com/Phil-ochs-love-me-im-a-liberal-lyrics

Phil Ochs, a prominent American singer-songwriter in the 1960s, created a song titled “Love Me; I’m a Liberal,” which has since become a compelling political anthem. Released in 1966, the song offers a thought-provoking critique of the liberal ideology prevalent during that era. Ochs, known for his satirical and insightful lyrics, takes a critical stance towards liberalism and challenges its claims of progressiveness. In this article, we will delve into the meaning behind the song and explore its significance in the context of the time.

The lyrics of “Love Me; I’m a Liberal” serve as a commentary on the hypocritical tendencies observed within the liberal movement. Ochs expresses his disillusionment with liberals who claim to support progressive causes but fail to actively participate or bring about real change. The song highlights the contradiction between their stated beliefs and their actions, pointing out that they often take a superficial approach towards important issues.

A cover of the 1979 Village People song “Go West”, about young gay men heading west to San Francisco.

The Pet Shop Boys version was released in 1993, not long after the breakup of the Soviet Union. The video makes allusions to Soviet iconography, with the implication that the chorus is referring to the capitalist West rather than San Francisco.

https://genius.com/Pet-shop-boys-go-west-lyrics

Neil has said of this track, "We tried to bring out the elegiac quality of a utopia that couldn't be realized." It was Chris's idea to cover this Village People semi-classic from 1979. Neil was reluctant at first, but he soon warmed to the idea and later conceded that, as usual, Chris's idea for a remake—not to mention its conceptual underpinning, which was also apparently his idea—was right on target. They performed it live well before a studio version was ever released, having done so in 1992 at The Haçienda nightclub in Manchester for an AIDS charity benefit, where they had been asked to perform by Derek Jarman.

[CAUTION, not HTTPS] http://www.geowayne.com/newDesign/very/gowest.htm

So successful was Pet Shop Boys’ 1993 cover of Go West that Village People’s original version is largely considered a footnote. Originally released in 1979, after the disco troupe’s mega-hit YMCA and its almost-as-successful follow-up, In The Navy, Go West signalled a sudden cooling in the five-piece’s chart fortunes when it failed to break the US Top 40 and stalled at No.15 in the UK. As the title track of their fourth studio album, Go West’s relative commercial misfire wasn’t quite enough to stall the momentum building around their first feature film, 1980’s Can’t Stop The Music, but the writing was already on the wall. “Disco Sucks” became the mantra of a wider backlash, and Village People would soon be ostracised as the US turned to AOR and the UK got swept up in new wave and the emerging synth-pop revolution.

https://www.thisisdig.com/feature/go-west-pet-shop-boys-song-story/

Go West is a popular song by the British synthpop duo, Pet Shop Boys. Released in 1993, it quickly became one of their most recognizable hits and is often associated with themes of hope, liberation, and optimism. Inspired by the original version recorded by the Village People in 1979, Pet Shop Boys reimagined the song with their unique style and added their own touch to its meaning.

https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-go-west-by-pet-shop-boys/

When you first listen to the song, the lyrics may seem simple and straightforward. It talks about an idealized place where the sun shines and the people are friendly. “Go West, life is peaceful there. Go West, lots of open air. Go West, to begin life new.” It’s an invitation to leave behind the troubles of the present and embark on a journey to a better place.

Lyrics: https://genius.com/Village-people-go-west-lyrics

The Village People caught the world’s attention in the late 1970s with their unique blend of disco music and outrageous costumes. The group’s biggest hit, “Y.M.C.A,” became a worldwide phenomenon that has been covered countless times since its release in 1978. However, another one of their popular songs that followed the success of “Y.M.C.A.” was “Go West”. This song has an important message that is increasingly relevant today, and it has proven to be a timeless classic.

https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-go-west-by-the-village-people/

The song's title comes from the nineteenth century quote "Go West, young man." The term was originated by John Babsone Lane Soule in 1851 the Terra, Haute, Indiana Express as a rallying cry to head westwards, where gold and much else could be found. Presidential candidate Horace Geeley repeated it in his New York newspaper, the Tribune, and being more famous the saying is commonly attributed to him.

“Dear Mama” is the song that made it OK to admit: even if they kill people and sell drugs, deep down, thugs are all sensitive mama’s boys.

It was the third hip-hop act ever (after Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five’s “The Message”“ and Public Enemy’s album, Fear of a Black Planet) to be placed in the Library of Congress.

Tupac’s mom, Afeni Shakur, died on May 2nd, 2016.

Look around you in this studio right now. I have women working on my music. They understand where I’m coming from. So does my mama. I always play my music for her before it comes out. “Blue Suede” is the lead single for Vince Staples' 2014 Def Jam EP Hell Can Wait.

The track opens with a blood-curdling synth and couples it with the bone-breaking thump of Me & the Biz Born to Roll.

There’s been much speculation as to whether this song is an extended metaphor of the hood life, a mockery of fake rappers that portray that image, or Vince just being Vince.

https://genius.com/Vince-staples-blue-suede-lyrics

In the chorus, Staples repeats the line “New shoes with the blue suede,” using blue suede shoes as a metaphor for material possessions, a symbol of status and success. He juxtaposes this image with the line “young graves get the bouquets,” reminding us of the violence and tragedy that often accompanies the pursuit of these material desires.
