Are you asking this because of Stranger Things?

I think the biggest issue is that a bathtub isn't big enough for most people to float in without touching the sides. Assuming the tub is large enough, the epsom salt would work to make you float and would be cost effective. You would have to figure out a way to regulate the temperature to 98.6 degrees though. And you would have to be in a pitch dark room.

@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah that sounds nice. But what if you just ended up spending all of your time in the tank? It might be too much power to have a tank like that on tap

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

The term nerf in respect to video games was actually derived from Nerf guns. Because Nerf guns are basically just normal guns that have been heavily nerfed 😅

The left lane is for passing. If you're not passing somebody, move over to the right lane. It's not that hard people

@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

In the city it is definitely usable for navigation purposes, getting to the intended destination.

So is the right lane. If you're driving the same speed as the car in front of you, you have no reason to use the left lane. Unless you're making a left turn. Right?

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

That's fine. That means you're passing the cars in the right lane that are slowing to make a turn.

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Idk man. That's above my pay grade.

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Sure, I do the same thing sometimes. But I also pay attention and move to the right when I see someone catching me from behind. And I especially don't drive at the exact same speed, side-by-side with the car in the right lane. And yet I see other drivers do that constantly.

Some people seem to think of it like a moral crusade or a pissing contest and they feel emasculated if another vehicle passes them. The sociology of automobiles and traffic is endlessly fascinating to me, although I often forget my intellectual curiosity when I'm actually driving 😅

This is a good book on the subject.

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

The passing lane* is for passing.

I actually like it better that way because it emphasizes how obvious it is. When I visited the UK and rented a car, I actually found that drivers were far more courteous and self-aware compared to the US.

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Hm, that makes sense. My mistake. Doesn't change my actual point but thanks for the info. Substitute passing lane for left lane and that's what I meant.

The US is really big, but the Northeast megapolis is a bit of a nightmare when it comes to driving etiquette.

"Moderation tools are nonexistent on here. It also eats up storage like crazy [...] The software is downright frustrating to work with" - Can any other instance admins relate to this?

After a year online the free speech-focused instance 'Burggit' is shutting down. Among other motivations, the admins point to grievances with the Lemmy software as one of the main reasons for shutting down the instance. In a first post asking about migrating to Sharkey, one of the admins states:...

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

I'd just like to point out that most of the complaints referenced in this post are at least partially being addressed with the latest release of Lemmy, 0.19.4

From the release announcement

Image Proxying

There is a new config option called image_mode which provides a way to proxy external image links through the local instance. This prevents deanonymization attacks where an attacker uploads an image to his own server, embeds it in a Lemmy post and watches the IPs which load the image.

Instead if image_mode is set to ProxyAllImages, image urls are rewritten to be proxied through /api/v3/image_proxy. This can also improve performance and avoid overloading other websites. The setting works by rewriting links in new posts, comments and other places when they are inserted in the database. This means the setting has no effect on posts created before the setting was activated. And after disabling the setting, existing images will continue to be proxied. It should also be considered experimental.

Moderation enhancements

With the URL blocklist admins can prevent users from linking to specific sites.

Admins and mods can now view the report history and moderation history for a given post or comment.

The functionality to resolve reports automatically when a post is removed was previously broken and is now fixed. Additionally, reports for already removed items are now ignored.

The site.content_warning setting lets admins show a message to users before rendering any content. If it is active, nsfw posts can be viewed without login, after consenting.

Mods and admins can now comment in locked posts.

Mods and admins can also use external tools such as LemmyAutomod for more advanced cases.

Media

There is a new functionality for users to list all images they have previously uploaded, and delete them if desired. It also allows admins to view and delete images hosted on the local instance.

When uploading a new avatar or banner, the old one is automatically deleted.

Instance admins should also checkout lemmy-thumbnail-cleaner which can delete thumbnails for old posts, and free significant amounts of storage.

As you can see, there were many improvements to the moderation tools and image hosting UX/storage requirements. There's obviously still room for improvement, but everything else out there has glaring issues as well. Mbin/PieFed are even less polished than Lemmy at this stage, although they are progressing quickly.

Also worth noting that most of the replies to the first post express a strong user preference for Lemmy over Sharkey.

Nice one dude. High memories run deep 😤

This is your guy

They basically do the same thing but the interface is better on this one.

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Huh that is weird.

Thanks for the community though, don't know how I've never seen that one yet. Lemmy is actually bigger than people think sometimes.

@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Why are people focusing on the numerical comparison between writers and billionaires? Whatever, it doesn't really matter.

The point of the article is that writers and authors are seemingly less valued than they ever have been. One reason for this is probably the change in media consumption habits which renders writers mere employees and underlings in the film and television industries (along with everywhere else). People no longer read books, which are the main format by which writers can become self-employed and self sufficient.

As always, it comes back to the homogenizing aspect of capitalism which tends to absorb everything into an interconnected web of economic dependencies. Instead of small businesses, we have overarching retail behemoths like Walmart and Amazon. Similarly, instead of a multitude of independent writers and authors expressing their own thoughts in books, they are compelled to work in teams to construct artificial, corporatized narratives due to economic necessity, yielding film franchises and television series along with all of their advertising and merchandising income.

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Eh it's fine, everyone on the internet likes to take the opportunity to correct an argument that they think is wrong, even if just on a technicality. I don't think the author of this piece needed to focus so much on the numerical comparison with billionaires either. If anything, they could have focused more on the historical compensation of writers to make a more compelling argument. Maybe try to find book sales and compensation from the past few centuries and see how they compare.

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Unfortunately not. And even the few people who do still read books are much less likely to purchase a physical copy.

Thinking about my koala community again even though I had been feeling a bit down lately, and dealing with probably too much email ( lemmy.world )

At this time, I have been feeling a bit down and is why I haven't being doing much with the koala community I had created here. But now I'm thinking about it again and had been wondering how I would incorporate a koala comfort place into it where one could talk about concerning things that may also be worrying things. I'm...

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

It sounds like you should definitely start filtering your emails. 200/day is way too much.

You shouldn't feel any pressure about posting more, it's already a very nice community about koalas. But I am also looking forward to whatever you want to share in the future.

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Wow, this is so dystopian. Late stage capitalism at its finest.

Btw if you can't get past the pay wall, add "12ft.io/" in front of the URL and it should bypass.

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Oh cool. I'm using Firefox and I didn't even realize that. Good tip 👌

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

First click the link. Then manually type 12ft.io/ in the URL bar, before the https://

I'm honestly not sure how it works because it doesn't work when you share the link, but if you type it manually it does. Works on all sorts of sites too, but some sites have already opted out. Honestly the Firefox reader view that the other guy posted is even easier and more useful, assuming you use Firefox.

If the inventor was known to be hubristic and reckless, it could be poetic justice. Otherwise, I think ironic is the best descriptor.

Btw, here's a historical example of this happening.

@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Dude, my birthday was yesterday. I guess early May is just a chill time of year

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

You're the one making a lot of assumptions based on what was originally a shower thought. It's a nice thought but it's completely and utterly incorrect in reality.

My kids are real life examples demonstrating that huge investment, while good for the individuals, does not reduce the cost or burden of them to society later in their life.

This isn't an assumption, it's a data point that contradicts your hypothetical theory.

The fundamental flaw in your thinking is your assumption that treating mental illness and disabilities will result in the person becoming a productive member of society. This is occasionally true, but much more commonly, the treatment serves to alleviate the more severe symptoms of the condition, without actually curing or fixing the condition.

Healthcare is primarily about minimizing the damage and suffering caused by various physical and mental ailments. It can't magically transform people into something they're not.

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Good old Tenzing Norgay 😅. Certainly ranks among the coolest of guides.

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

From what I can tell, !coolguides has a fairly rigid set of rules, with a specific distinction made between guides and infographics. That's great, I like when moderators take an active role in curating the content of their communities.

But I would guess that !coolguides is possibly a response to those rules. Basically if your post got removed from the lemmy.ca community because it was technically an infographic, you could post it to sopuli.xyz community instead.

That's my understanding of the ecosystem, without having spoken to any of the people involved.

imaqtpie ,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Indeed, well said.

How is mbin development going in your opinion? I am hearing good things but I still haven't gotten around to making an account.
