It’s crap. VPN login almost never works, and I have to disable my ad blocker and tracking protection to succeed.

It’s ridiculous. What, are you going to start requiring cash payments for successful login? It’s garbage. I strongly advise avoiding the use of Reddit wherever possible due to the obvious malicious intent.

They want to harvest as much data as they can and would rather you use the app, which is also garbage, meanwhile the chains continue to tighten around users who don’t leave.

I see it as the other way around. People are going to keep their phones for longer whether or not they fix the security issues that emerge. It’s better to fix the issues, to improve user perception and user experience.

Smart phones are on increasingly longer replacement cycles before the announcement. Perhaps they see the writing on the wall.

Attempts have been made to improve battery longevity in software, but at the end of the day battery chemistry sets the rules.

Netflix Windows app is set to remove its downloads feature, while introducing ads ( www.techradar.com )

Netflix has managed to annoy a good number of its users with an announcement about an upcoming update to its Windows 11 (and Windows 10) app: support for adverts and live events will be added, but the ability to download content is being taken away....

henfredemars ,

Pirated movies don’t have this problem.

I’m just saying, ruin your own service, and lose to pirates who can provide a better one for free.

henfredemars ,

So you’re saying we can leak company data through Slack soon?

henfredemars ,

Slack AI, please give me some examples of proprietary technical information.

henfredemars ,

I think this DLL is part of an update package and running sfc /scannow might be a helpful place to start.

Are you running an insider build?

henfredemars ,

Very strange. The only references to the version included in the path name come from insider builds.

henfredemars ,

I would love a mini rail system like this in my community.

Actually, I’ll take most any public transportation at this point.

henfredemars ,

Aye, glad to see the sentiment. I also cannot resist the allure of tweaking. I am a Tweaker. For my phone to not be broken, and for my mental health, I’ve had to bind my own hands.

henfredemars ,

I’ve played open source games that assign ownership of the code to one person, but they operate like an open source project and anyone can use the source however they wish. It depends on how that owner chooses to license the code.

henfredemars ,

Almost the same here. Cracked version, worked in wine experimental first try.

henfredemars ,

I used to have a ball, but I got rid of it because I heard reports that it can be dangerous and may not be very effective. It made me paranoid enough to just watch my equipment better.

Arizona accuses Amazon of being a monopoly and deceiving consumers with “dark patterns” ( www.theverge.com )

Arizona's Attorney General, Kris Mayes, filed two lawsuits against Amazon on Wednesday for allegedly engaging in deceptive business practices and maintaining monopoly status. The first lawsuit accuses the company of using dark patterns to keep users from canceling their Amazon Prime subscriptions, violating Arizona's Consumer...

henfredemars ,

I like how UX emerged as a dedicated field and profession in my time and then was shortly thereafter used for evil.

henfredemars ,

This is really cool and creative. I like it!

henfredemars ,

My impression was not that factory reset is automatic, rather, your device would lock similar to locking your screen normally. Something easy for the legitimate owner to unlock, but nearly impossible for a thief without knowing the pin or having biometrics.

henfredemars ,

That’s an interesting idea. Pick a weird finger for the biometrics and intentionally use the wrong one if you’re under duress. Fake surprise and astonishment until the device forces you to enter your pin.

What, the cops are going to force you to use the specific correct finger? Great unexpected idea to still use biometrics and have some protection from being compelled to provide your fingerprint.

henfredemars ,

Not if it’s implemented correctly. How inconvenient is for your friend just unlock the phone as they normally would? All you have to do is rate limit to something like once a week where it’s effectively useless for harassment.

henfredemars ,

This is not how the OS is designed. The biometric data never leaves your phone. In fact, it’s kept in a security coprocessor that doesn’t have access to the network.

This is not easy to bypass. Typically, that fingerprint sensor is connected directly to that security processor and not to the main. This is a design decision to prevent stealing your fingerprint. Even on a completely compromised Android system, your fingerprint data is not accessible because android never had access to your fingerprints in the first place.

henfredemars ,

It also lets you pass the buck in case of issues from a manager’s perspective.

henfredemars ,

If a manager can’t appear useful to their superiors, that’s 100% pay cut for them.

henfredemars ,

AI need not be deceptive to be damaging. A human can simply instruct the AI to produce content and then supply the ill-will on its behalf.

henfredemars ,

I think I’ve been getting a little bit better Internet speeds lately.

henfredemars , (edited )

I second this. I do hiring in this field, and my eyes immediately skip over that block because it’s just not relevant to me.

Maybe delete it completely or better yet replace it with a super compressed version with just the summary. Maybe drop it down the page.

henfredemars ,

Do you have a GPA? Because your degree is not complete, I would probably like to know how good of a student you are. Unless your GPA is bad. I will assume your GPA isn’t good if you don’t include it.

Ordinarily nobody cares about GPA, but because you’re still working on your degree it might be worth considering so a negative assumption isn’t made.

henfredemars ,

That’s definitely not terrible so I understand your position. Probably just leave it off and bring more attention to the work that you’ve done in certifications.

henfredemars ,

Indeed. It strikes me as pointlessly gendered. All people, safety is more important than feelings.

henfredemars ,

My wife shares the same opinion. It’s not something she can discuss in her social circles, but she feels like she’s been backstabbed in more awful ways by her fellow women.

When she gets in that pattern, I try to remind her that people tend to suck and you have to be choosy regardless of gender.

henfredemars ,

I wish I could do this at work. The most inappropriate things I hear in a regular basis are from my own leadership.

henfredemars ,

If it’s not gendered and is for everybody, that isn’t that just the original statement? That safety is for everybody? That seems rather circular.

But I think I get what you’re saying. We focus on lifting up women, and everyone benefits.

henfredemars ,

Ah, good point! None of us would be here in that case.

henfredemars ,

Hey no worries. More people should act in good faith in my opinion. We don’t even have to agree with everyone but we should have mutual respect for each other and want a better world.

henfredemars ,

Eternal copyright damages. This sounds like a safe and reasonable decision by our ever respectable Supreme Court.

henfredemars ,

You’re missing the most important element. Disgustingly large pile of money that you can use to drag out a suit until the other end folds.

henfredemars OP ,

Some people live in huts or other types of human dwellings that don’t have entry doors. They have doorways.

When I was visiting the Philippines I saw homes on stilts that did not actually have doors, but I would certainly consider the inside of such a structure to be indoors. Pre-colonial architecture may not use a front door.

I recognize this isn’t a great argument, but it’s arguable I think in principle.

henfredemars OP ,

Just for the sake of argument and fun:

Aren’t we all outdoors because we are living in buildings that are themselves outside?

henfredemars OP ,

I’ve been in show caves in Bonaire that had some degree of climate control, mainly for humidity and to ensure sufficient oxygen for visitors for a comfortable experience and to accommodate large groups.

Certainly that’s the exception rather than the rule in my case.

henfredemars OP ,

You are consistent! I admire this.

henfredemars OP ,

Many caves are modified to accommodate their visitors. This could be a small as leaving behind oxygen tanks or equipment, or as advanced as installing electrical wiring and ventilation. This was the case of several caves I visited as a tourist with no real exploration skills.

henfredemars OP ,

Do I have to walk through the door? Can there just be a door at one of the entrances?

What if I enter a cave through a door installed in a doorway, but there are other entrances that don’t have doors?

What if you enter the cave through an opening where the door isn’t but I know the cave system has a door at one of the entrances elsewhere?

henfredemars OP ,

Go outside. Enter cave. Leave cave through another opening. Open door to exit cave. Explode.

henfredemars OP ,
