Anyone who wants to become a cat should be able to.

I’m impressed that the computer was usable with the failed CPU fan.

They do, but it’s a very simple speaker that’s really more of a buzzer than what you might think of as a speaker.

Many motherboards use a combination of beeps to report hardware errors if you fail on power on.

henfredemars ,

I think we just don’t want other tech companies getting the limelight.

henfredemars ,

Hard to blame Apple. I mean, for a good chunk of time that app hardly had content standards at all. It was effectively unmoderated for a time due to bad management.

Kernel process LLM

God I hope not. That sounds extremely insecure. Definitely do not do this in the kernel.

henfredemars ,

Subtly, not by pushing it on them directly. Instead, I share links to topics that might interest them. Show people the value.

henfredemars ,

Directions unclear. Reddit blocks my work IP for “network security” unless accounts are used to maximize data collection.

henfredemars ,

I’m not using it because by and large it’s not implemented properly on consumer hardware, and my ISP doesn’t care if their IPv6 network is broken.

henfredemars ,

When I became a team leader at my last job, my first priority was making a list of parts of the language we must never use because of our high reliability requirement.

henfredemars ,

strtok is a worst offender that comes to mind. Global state. Pretty much just waiting to bite you in the ass and it did, multiple times.

henfredemars ,

Sounds like karma farming or more likely Reddit pumping their own numbers.

I would hope that on Lemmy that these kind of anomalies would prompt an investigation. Like, fix the garbage coming from your instance or we’re not going to accept your content.

Meanwhile, this is the latest of many times I’ve seen completely fabricated posts and discussions that are blatantly ignored by Reddit. Another example is bizarre threads with 20k votes and like three comments.

henfredemars ,

It’s even funnier when something like this happens to me and our IT guy goes I don’t remember installing that version…

henfredemars ,

Years ago I was told that serverless would be cheaper than running your own servers. It seems like it’s not necessarily cheaper, but just a different way of designing a solution. Would you agree with that assessment? I have never used serverless. Every place I’ve worked needed tightly controlled data so on premises only.

Meanwhile I host my personal website on dirt cheap VPS.

henfredemars ,

Underrated. It’s important to communicate that the parameters of the request cannot be satisfied as soon as possible. It might be a simple mistake from someone without a technical background who should instead be finding more resources first.

henfredemars ,

Such a great game. I love the dodging mechanic.

henfredemars ,

That seems incredibly stupid. A doctor can afford to sue.

henfredemars ,

I’m on mobile and the user interface is lagging out. Definitely challenging those layout engines.

henfredemars ,

Let’s modernize it with AI that will get the kids interested.

henfredemars ,

Strict parents make sneaky children.

I’m on Voyager and all I can see is a brown horizontal separator.

henfredemars ,

Why would they delete such a beautiful thing? It’s part of our history.

henfredemars ,

It’s a small party but a good one.

henfredemars ,

To some of these people there’s no such thing as bad media coverage.

henfredemars ,

iOS needs this feature badly.

henfredemars , (edited )

Not the user you asked however I moved from Android to iOS a few months ago. Before this, I have tended to switch between platforms because I’m incredibly picky. Perhaps I believe the grass is always greener.

Most recently, my young Pixel 8 Pro had severe modem problems. There was a rash of bad updates that impacted me. I felt insulted being unable to use my phone when I needed it. I looked at Samsung, but I don’t like their brand of bloatware. iOS inspired confidence.

I took the L and sold my Pixel at significant loss to get something working now to stay in contact with my family. I love Pixel, but man do I feel sour about my connectivity problems on it.

henfredemars ,

I don’t understand why people think privatization will improve services. Literally the concept of privatization is to enable system to maximize profits. Why is there this fantasy that more profits means better service for you?

henfredemars ,

For me it wasn't even the performance angle. The modem is a real under-performer.

henfredemars ,

Don't misunderstand -- I loved the phone. But in my area, with my service, it struggled. Many people don't have this problem. I find it's a bit choosy.

I'm not sure I can make a confident recommendation without more information about what you value. There are many respectable options, and Pixel is generally one of the best.

henfredemars ,

I’m a fan of the OP 7 Pro. It’s a bit long in the tooth, but it’s performed well mainly because it was generous with memory when I first came out. Also a good CPU generation. The ROM scene could be better.

Paradoxically, I think it’s still the Pixel as my favorite, but it would be nice to get an opinion first from someone who uses your cellular provider. I hate having to preface it because I love the vanilla Android experience. I’m trying to resist making sweeping generalizations based on my one data point. It’s technically possible that I had a hardware problem.

My wife is next to me, holding me in her arms while she sleeps. I am excited for her to wake up naturally and then we will go get bagels from our favorite bagel place.

Microsoft starts bundling Windows 11 with its 'PC optimizer' app in some regions ( www.neowin.net )

PC optimizers are not a new concept, and they have been around for quite a while. Nowadays, many consider them unnecessary, but having an official program made by Microsoft that is capable of (allegedly) speeding up your PC may sound quite appealing....

henfredemars ,

Cool idea MS. If only you had access to the OS itself to prevent it from gradually slowing down and littering the system with junk. Since we can't fix Windows (Only the maker of Windows can do that!), let's make a dedicated band-aid app to fix Windows.

Maybe whoever is working on Windows will get the message and fix those problems that your tool was built to fix.

Funny thing that my Android phone and Linux desktop don't need antivirus, don't accumulate junk in registries or system folders, and don't require dedicated optimization tools.

We all have our asteroid that’s coming for us.

It all but guarantees escalation, from which no one benefits.

Account suspended

Browsing Reddit at work like I've literally done every work day for the last six years, suddenly Reddit won't let me vote. Says my account has been suspended, but all I have to do is reset my password, using the email address I have on file. I don't have one. Can't get the email to reset the password, can't add an email now. I...

henfredemars ,

Depends on the workplace. Sometimes, waiting is part of the job. It’s not necessarily sneaky activity. There are unfortunately also legitimate reasons to browse it, which I’ve done so to get answers to technical questions.

henfredemars ,

It may not be malice. Incompetence.

henfredemars ,

By not understanding how version control works. I've worked at places that had a surprising number of developers who would just merge things in ways that drop code from other developers.

henfredemars ,

It’s pretty straightforward. Merge conflicts? No such thing! Just make my version the next version.

henfredemars ,

How optimistic. At my last workplace I got us to finally stop using zip files for version control. This was at a fortune 500 company.

The utility of software is so great that even terrible processes are still functional to some degree.

henfredemars ,

I now work for a small business but in the interest of not getting bitten in the ass I don’t wish to give the name of my previous employer. It was a large defense contractor, but our values didn’t align so I moved on when I found another opportunity to put food on the table. I know that’s not a satisfying answer but I’m here for entertainment value and the opportunity cost might not be worth it. My main point was that even though they have the money they didn’t see the value in good software process.

All the time! We would leave bugs unfixed even if the fix was trivially easy because management felt productive listing it as a cost savings. Software maintenance was seen as a necessary evil.

henfredemars ,

I would hope so as I don’t think that’s necessary to be an effective theft deterrent. I imagine a thief has trouble reselling a stolen phone if you have to flash a custom OS to make it usable. A scary boot loader security warning on every boot should deter most buyers, lowering the value of your stolen item and complicating resale.
