BRICS just keeps winning, doesn't it?

Brazil is led by a reactionary who understands nuance less than your average reddit troll, yet Lula is probably the best president they've had in 20 years.

Russia. Wants to rule Europe but it's military is only slightly more competent than a bunch of 12 year old boys with airsoft guns and a 12 pack of Monster drinks.

India is led by an ethnofascist who is using Hinduism to turn the country into a dictatorship. Will eat Russia to empower itself.

West Taiwan aka China. Should focus on taking eastern Russia instead of trying to cause a massive war by invading Taiwan.

South Africa. The least insane of the bunch.

If Tr*mp wins, the US will probably sign up. It'll have to be called ABRICS though cuz 'Murica First!

Just saw a Wankpanzer for the first time last Friday and I agree. It is ugly and anyone who fell for this scam deserves every ounce of derision they receive.

There is no proof outside of the Bible and some other writings. Even those mentions seem to have occurred well after Jesus supposedly lived.

In terms of non-literary proof, there isn't anything credible.

There's more evidence that King David existed.

harrys_balzac ,

Exactly. An example from outside the Bible might be Achilles. There was probably a great warrior with that name in the Mycenaean Greek world. Later storytellers probably just added more to make it sound better or the material was from other warriors who were like Achilles.

Some of Jesus' teachings definitely come from the milieu of the Roman era in Judea and Palestina.

Personally my favorite head canon is that Jesus was, or his parents were, Egyptian born Jews or Coptic converts to Judaism. It's a reverse Obamas birth certificate. There is so much time spent establishing the lineage and explaining the flight to Egypt.

Assembled a thousand years after the fact by a group with a vested interest in solidifying the narrative to fit their own.

Hell, the Tanakh didn't really get put together until well after Christianity appeared and it was a reaction to Christians appropriating Jewish literary culture to establish their own.

It'd be similar to people a thousand years from believing that Christian Gray is literally descended from Edward and Bella.

Russia says U.S. is responsible for deadly Ukrainian attack on Crimea ( www.reuters.com )

MOSCOW, June 23 (Reuters) - Russia said on Sunday that the United States was responsible for a Ukrainian attack on the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula with five U.S.-supplied missiles that killed at least five people including three children and injured 124 more....

The first Shakespeare I watched was Branaughs Henry V. It actually got me into Shakespeare a bit.

His Hamlet was filmed on 70mm, giving it some great color and depth though I can't sit still long enough to watch it in one sitting.

In general, you can't beat The Reduced Shakespeare Companys "Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged."

harrys_balzac ,

Why many word when few good?

Seriously though, "AI" itself is misleading but if they want to be ignorant and whiny about it, then they should be labeled just as they are.

What they really seem to want is an automatic metadata tag that is more along the lines of "a human took this picture and then used 'AI' tools to modify it."

That may not work because by using Adobe products, the original metadata is being overwritten so Thotagram doesn't know that a photographer took the original.

A photographer could actually just type a little explanation ("I took this picture and then used Gen Fill only") in a plain text document, save it to their desktop, and copy & paste it in.

But then everyone would know that the image had been modified - which is what they're trying to avoid. They want everyone to believe that the picture they're posting is 100% their work.

I'd hope that the farmer learned a lesson but I doubt it's the right one.

harrys_balzac ,

But the war in Ukraine has demonstrated that US stockpiles of ammunition are woefully low. Doesn't matter how many planes you have or that your soldiers have the best weapons if they run out of missiles and bullets.

harrys_balzac ,

There's the issue - anyone with any sense or sensibility has left The Xitter. All that's left are the bots, the unknowing, and the attention whores. Xitter is the new Facebook.

General Lee - Robert E Lee, general of the Army of Northern Virginia, the main army for the Confederate States of America.

Jefferson Davis - president of the Confederate States of America.

The Flag - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America#First_flag?wprov=sfla1

The whole war was about slavery. The Confederate states wanted to have slaves. When Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860, they threw a tantrum, claimed the election wasn't legitimate (sound familiar?), then seceded and tried to form an independent nation.

Anyone who says that it was about states' rights is being disingenuous. The Confederate Constitution mentions slavery and includes regulations for it.

The Confederacy also wanted to deport all Jews (except for one - the Secretary of The Treasury) and eventually conquer Mexico and use them as slaves as well. The brown ones.

The Confederacy also would have enslaved any Native Americans remaining in those states.

The vast majority of southern soldiers were too poor to ever own a slave and were treated only slightly better than slaves. It was very obviously the white supremacist elitist class exploiting everyone else.

The Republican party regurgitates a lot of the Confederate talking points.

harrys_balzac ,

Ah...well, it was always implied. It's a stretch though since in the South, cousin stuff isn't incest. That's just normal, otherwise the population would decline rapidly in terms of numbers.

I ran them through the wash before using them and it was pretty much instantaneous.

Suffered through that night, in case it was something else. Next day, my allergies calmed down and when I laid down, it started again.

It's upsetting bc they're super squishy and comfortable.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of that.

Do I Need to Watch Discovery To Enjoy SNW?

Hi all! Long time Star Trek fan here with my first post. I'm gonna start out by saying that I promise I'm not a hater of Discovery at all. It just has done nothing for me and from what I read, has not made any changes that would have solved my personal issues with it. I'm fine with others liking it and honestly wish that I did...

harrys_balzac ,

I started watching SNW with having only finished S1 of Disco. After a couple of episodes, I decided I wanted to know the references.

I enjoyed S2 of Disco much more than S1 and that was 90+% because of the SNW cast being introduced.

Everything I didn't like about Disconwas still there, but less of it.

In retrospect, I would have appreciated your advice. There were some good episodes but most of it was unnecessary.

Google Search’s “udm=14” trick lets you kill AI search for good | Ars Technica ( arstechnica.com )

Tack "&udm=14" on to the end of a normal search, and you'll be booted into the clean 10 blue links interface. While Google might not let you set this as a default, if you have a way to automatically edit the Google search URL, you can create your own defaults.

Probably the same people who still happily use Facebook and buy a $1500 laptop so they "run" huge programs like ancestry.com and Gmail.

harrys_balzac ,

Did you really read it? Pay attention to the cabbage.

As someone who is aging. Late thirties. How can I keep my finger on the pulse of current trends, particularly in music?

As an example. I grew up in hip-hop but at a certain point I stopped listening to new people and realised recently that I’d slept on some bangers. Like Kendrick particularly, but even people like Juice WRLD and Xxxtentacion....

harrys_balzac ,

It depends on which algo/service. Pandora and I have never meshed so I just avoid that one. YouTube occasionally tosses a good one in my feed. Spotify does well enough that I pay. SoundCloud is probably my favorite.

Aside from that, I'm subscribed to a few music communities here. That has widened my net. Same with imgur - 99% of the time I'm there for the memes but occasionally someone will post something that helps me find a new band.

I've gotten back into going to concerts. I go by myself and end up meeting bunches of new people and we all end up talking about music, sharing the names of our favorite tracks and bands.

You're going to have to blaze your own trail. There's so much new music being made every day that it's very much a "needle in a haystack" thing.

Plus, don't automatically rule out a band because they're not new. That is, Alien Ant Farm was never on my radar until last year. Their cover of "Smooth Criminal" hit my SoundCloud recommendations. It's from before MJ died...anyway, I've listened to some of their stuff and added some to my playlists.

Keep your ears and mind open.

harrys_balzac ,

Yeah, it's been years since I went to a show. Went to see Grouplove a couple of months ago and nobody I knew was familiar with them (very sad) so I decided to fly solo. Going to see Bleachers soon. Again, by myself.

Imgur will help your meme game, though not your sex appeal.

On here, I just started searching for things like "indie," "alternative", etc. I haven't really come across too many communities dedicated to individual bands...well, none that I am interested in. YMMV.

SoundCloud has been worth the subscription fee, imo.

I can't believe I forgot Caesar and Pharaoh. I played the f out of those when I was a PC only player. I sucked at them but loved them.

Mostly "this has been answered in another thread" and "why don't you Google it" comments in my experience.

harrys_balzac ,

The paradox of tolerance does not exist. Tolerance is a social contract, not a moral imperative.

Acceptance of false paradox is what the intolerant and authoritarian want.

By rejecting it as false, it lays bare that the intolerant have rejected polite society and have made themselves open to be rightfully marginalized and ostracized.

harrys_balzac ,

I'm not trolling.

The minute you allow intolerance to exist, you have lost.

Karl Popper framed it incorrectly. He makes it sound like a moral imperative and the hateful have seized on that.

If tolerance is a moral issue there is little that can be done about those who choose to be intolerant. Being moral is an individual choice.

It IS a social contract, howevet. If I want my lifestyle to be tolerated then I need to tolerate that of others, unless my (or their) lifestyle imposes unnecessary restrictions on the other.

For example, all the Christians whining about Christianity not being tolerated. They're getting it wrong - nobody is saying don't be Christian. They break the contract by imposing their specific values on everyone else by force.

There is a baseline on which the vast majority agree concerning appropriate behavior in society. Murder, for example, is generally considered wrong. We don't tolerate it.

Breaking a contract has consequences.

harrys_balzac ,

I didn't have to program this, thankfully. The code was used as an example of recursion but the explanation was lacking so I ended up writing out each frame by end until I understood it. Took a few pages and a couple of hours.

I am grateful that I learned what I did going through it but I'd rather not do it again.

That's the tism side of my brain. The ADHD side of my brain thinks shaving is the most boring chore ever. I fold and put away my laundry with greater frequency.

harrys_balzac ,

That was my thought as well.

Now that I understand it, I'll be able to block the bloc of boneheads.

I know that a broken clock is right twice a day but using a broken clock is just dumb. Out of the 1440 minutes in a day, it gets 1438 of them wrong? Broken clocks get binned.

In Utah, you get charged fees by the day if you've been charged and/or convicted of a misdemeanor. No charge if it's a felony. They figure they'll get their moneys worth if the inmate goes to work at Utah Corrections Industries.

harrys_balzac ,

Charged. No fees for prison. Just county/local jail.
