Le Demoiselle de Avignon may be a revolting exploitation and sexist display by a renowned, womanizing misogynist, but it’s also a fantastic example of form, style, cubism, an illustration of the shift from art nouveau to art deco, and, frankly, a celebration of the female form. I’ve even heard it argued that it empowers sex workers, although I’ve also heard some fierce debate about that.

My point is that, when exercising the nuanced discretion of “separating the art from the artist”, the “art” in question should, at least, be of sufficient redeeming value to consider overriding the distaste for the artist in order to consider the value of the art, especially when considering the overall contributions to art (on the general sense) made by the artist in question (nobody reasonable would dare question Picasso’s contributions to the art world, for example, despite home being a contemptible person).

W. Bush, on the other hand, is no Picasso— and even Picasso, the shitbag he was, was no war criminal. And he certainly hated fascists.

Hooray! My $350k MfA finally paid off!

Can I get some help with rent? (Seriously! I haven’t eaten in 3 days!)

Thank goodness you’re not in such a position.

Incidentally, what is your qualification for judging the value of art? Where did you get your PhD in Art History?

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

I’m not judging anything. What I’m saying is that works must be judged for their redeeming value in toto against the actions the deeds of the artist. Ie, one must be judged in balance against the other, not simply one or the other in a vacuum.

I’m trying to express my standard for judgement, not making a judgement myself.

Where the hell do you think those “subjective opinions” come from?

Not from some silly BfAs nor MfAs! Ha!

gregorum ,

I know that it means you cannot unilaterally shit on something just because you personally don’t like it, especially if you cannot provide any objective analysis to defend your position

Of course, it’s all about her, not her victims.

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

She can express empathy for the victims as well as shame and remorse, without naming them specifically. Apparently, she only regrets the consequences that she, herself, is suffering.

The responsibility to keep the victims’ names obfuscated is that of the publisher(s)/media, not her, and could easily be edited from any statement she made containing them.

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

Oh, my, no. The identities of the victims should certainly be protected. I was just commenting that the teacher appears to have no concern for the impact of her actions upon her victims, only that of the consequences upon herself.

gregorum , (edited )
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

It’s revelatory of her grasp (or lack thereof) of the power dynamic which exists in these situations, and how she doesn’t understand the imbalance— and the impact/consequences on the victims. There’s an element of both narcissism and general sociopathy involved in some types of pederasty and pedophelia.

But there’s a lot that’s unknown about the disorder, and it’s also a field that carries tremendous taboo fin mental health (those who try to treat it and/or research it rather than simply punish it severely meet massive resistance, professional blacklisting, etc.), so learning about it - and how to treat it - progresses slowly. Which is a bad thing, for everyone because ignoring the problem won’t make it vanish. The public just wants to pillory and execute pedophiles, butt that doesn’t help with things like treatment and prevention.

If we want to stop pedophiles - or, better, identify them before they act so they can be treated and victims can never be created - we need to know more than we do now.

  1. If murder is wrong, then murder is wrong. Just because the State does it doesn’t magically make it ok.
  2. The death penalty has never been proven to be a deterrent to any crime
  3. the death penalty had been proven to cost many times the cost of lifetime incarceration, sometimes between 300%-700%, all being paid by the taxpayer, sometimes resulting in the release of the perpetrator.
  4. in car too many cases to be considered a “simple mistake”, later evidence has been used to exonerate death row inmates, proving that lives would have been lost due to failures of the justice system which could not have been rectified should the defendants had been executed. In such cases, the justice system would have failed.
    5.vengeance is not justice. Anyone claiming relief from witnessing the death of a criminal perpetrator: beware of anyone who thirsts for blood, for they do not discriminate as to the source.

public toplessness is legal in NYC and has been since 2010 for everyone. i'm guessing that it's not in Dublin?

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

It’s legal to be topless in NYC as long as it’s not for “sexual reasons” (whatever that means)— so this particular case might be something of a legal debate… but I don’t see any cop bothering to arrest her for it. Shockingly, they don’t care.

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

Yeah, you’d be surprised about how much that wouldn’t fly with the NYPD. I watch Matthew Silver run into the Union Sq. Whole Foods in a Speedo in a legit performance art piece.

The cops had little respect for that.

I did, tho. After he managed to escape, we met up after and smoked a spliff. Then I made it to class at Parsons.

That guy was very interesting to know while I was an undergrad at design school.

[EU Politic] which "European party" has done the most to prevent a new Qatargate ?

In the context of the European election next month. I am surprised that the Qatargate where several elected official have been charged for receiving Qatari money against service (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qatar_corruption_scandal_at_the_European_Parliament ) isn't more discussed by media....

The idea of getting something before I know its usefulness confuses me. Do you mean finding that something is more useful than you expected?

If that's the case, I once had an alarm clock which curiously had a thermometer in it to measure the temperature in the room. I was able to use it - for years - to hold my landlord to account for being shitty on the heat during the winter.

for full clarification:

The United Nations on Monday clarified that the overall number of fatalities in Gaza tallied by the Ministry of Health in Gaza remains unchanged, at more than 35,000, since the war broke out between Israel and Hamas on October 7.

The clarification comes after the UN humanitarian agency OCHA (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) published a report on May 8 with revised data regarding the number of Palestinian casualties in the war. The UN agency in its report reduced the number of women and children believed to have been killed in the war by nearly half.

The number was reduced because the UN says it is now relying on the number of deceased women and children whose names and other identifying details have been fully documented, rather than the total number of women and children killed. The ministry says bodies that arrive at hospitals get counted in the overall death count.

UN says total number of deaths in Gaza remains unchanged after controversy over revised data

As someone who is aging. Late thirties. How can I keep my finger on the pulse of current trends, particularly in music?

As an example. I grew up in hip-hop but at a certain point I stopped listening to new people and realised recently that I’d slept on some bangers. Like Kendrick particularly, but even people like Juice WRLD and Xxxtentacion....

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

I can’t help but feel the same as you do. I listen to a lot of political podcasts, and somehow their spat has spilled over into those too goddamnit.

I’m here, trying to listen to a deep analysis of what’s happening with decisions within the State Department wrt stopping weapons shipments to Israel, and some chucklefuck asks Sec. Blinken his take on Kendrick— I’m like, “what the actual fuck?”

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

Because they want to keep in touch with and still feel like a part of their community?

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

They are willing to die for a cause they believe in.

Ok, but, in this case, that’s not likely to accomplish much… which makes it a wasted effort— and wasted life.

In other words: this is a poor choice as a form of protest, as it’s unlikely to accomplish its goals while also potentially being fatal to the participants.

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

i really don't understand why there any more weapons use restrictions. fears of Russia "escalating" are obviously pointless because they're definately going to anyway.

gregorum ,

That won’t stop a huge amount of people from complaining that this “isn’t enough” and failing to appreciate what a monumental victory that this is.

Not satisfied that this doesn’t go far enough? Keep protesting! It works!

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

How many times do you need it explained to you?

gregorum , (edited )
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

Well, you’re well past your 3rd explanation., and if you “don’t get it” at this point, it’s either because you’re too dumb, or — obviously — arguing in bad faith. Both are your fault, and nobody else’s obligation to deal with.

Just like all conservatives, You blame everyone else for the consequences of your own failings. Because if you can’t win on merit, just smear shit on the walls until everyone runs away.

Well, I’m not running away, asshole

Vote for Trump then, since you’re willing to ignore any concept of reason or sense

The State Department said that Israel's military campaign in Gaza may have violated international law. ( www.nytimes.com )

The Biden administration has concluded it is “reasonable to assess” that Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has violated international law, but has not found specific instances that would justify the withholding of military aid, the State Department told Congress on Friday....

gregorum , (edited )
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

For the US state department to say this publicly? Oh yeah, it’s a big deal.

US’s Israel policy doesn’t shift adroitly— considering it has never shifted, not ever.

So, yeah, this means things have changed. That was the point of all those protests, right?

Edit: think it hasn’t shifted enough? Keep protesting!!! it works!

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

It’s not the statement itself. It’s the fact that the US State department has made its first change and its policy with Israel in ever.

That’s a big deal

gregorum , (edited )
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

I get where you’re coming from and your sense of urgency— obviously. I want Biden to tell Bibi to fuck off with the Palestinian civilian genocide bullshit and to cut off all offensive weapons deliveries 20 years ago.

My point is that US policy on Israel has, really, never changed-- until just now. And that’s a really big deal. I get that it’s not as much or as fast as everyone wanted, but that it happened at all it a tremendous victory. Changing state dept. policy isn’t just some party trick, and changing state dept. policy on Israel is a goddamned miracle. So enough with the “not enough”. Celebrate this victory, pat some backs, and then keep protesting!

Now that policy can be changed, keep fighting for bigger change!

Edit: fixating on that you didn’t get a big enough victory in round 1 (even though it’s the biggest victory by anyone, ever wrt US-Israel policy shift) comes off as ignorant and ungrateful. Take the win and move on to round 2.

Perhaps this speaks to a larger issue— how much bullying exists in the FOSS community, and what can the community - at large - do to address it, or even begin to bring awareness to it?

This argument that it’s a security vulnerability isn’t a terrible one (it’s certainly very logical and quite irrefutable), but I think there are others to be made for addressing this issue.

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

Not so much. One has the freedom to explore and subscribe and participate in communities across the lemmyverse (mostly) regardless of what one’s home instance is.

However, one’s home instance often has quite the influence on one’s… perspective and one’s exposure— even one’s intended exposure.

For example, one will probably have a notably different experience if one starts from Lemmy.world vs lemmy.ml (or even lemmygrad.ml) vs lemm.ee. Or, especially Beehaw.org. And that experience may color how one views how one experiences external communities.

My point is that it’s mor complex and nuanced than you’re giving it credit for.
