Cheaper for the energy companies to produce/collect… that doesn’t mean they’ll charge consumers less for it.

They’re mad because they’re terrified that, in order to compete without paying slave wages for Chinese labor, they might have to gasp! get paid less to make up the difference! Not smaller profits! Oh, no!

I read it— but, more importantly, I also know the one thing that China has which constantly allows them to undercut Western manufacturing: cheap labor.

New Israeli attack today (Tuesday) on Rafah evacuation zone ( www.reuters.com )

CAIRO, May 28 (Reuters) - Israeli tanks shelled a tent camp in an evacuation area west of Rafah and killed at least 21 people on Tuesday, Gaza health authorities said, while advancing to the heart of the southern Gaza city for the first time after a night of heavy bombardment....

Pope Francis apologizes for using a homophobic slur during a meeting with bishops | CNN ( www.cnn.com )

“The Pope never intended to offend or express himself in homophobic terms, and he extends his apologies to those who felt offended by the use of a term, as reported by others,” the Vatican said in a Tuesday statement....

I don’t think we can know what he intended. We can make an assumption based off his past actions, and I’m inclined to believe this explanation. Italian isn’t his first language, he’s old, and I think it’s a likely explanation that he slipped up and made an old man mistake.

gregorum OP , (edited )
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

sorry, i don't agree. you can believe what you want, however we can't really know... and i'm not convinced.

edit: to clarify: i do believe his position about gay priests is homophobic. i just don't believe that he intentionally meant to use a slur while discussing it, and am willing to believe the "old man slip-up" excuse. it's hair-splitting, i know.

He has since issued an apology:

“The Pope never intended to offend or express himself in homophobic terms, and he extends his apologies to those who felt offended by the use of a term, as reported by others,” the Vatican said in a Tuesday statement.

“As he (Pope Francis) has said on several occasions, ‘in the Church there is room for everyone, everyone! No one is useless, no one is superfluous, there is room for everyone. Just as we are, everyone.’”

Seems like they’re playing it off as “grandpa had a woopsie”.

All things considered, I am. He’s old, Italian isn’t his first language, and he has a history of progressive changes in favor of the lgbtq+ community. I’m more inclined to believe it was a mistake than to think it was intentional or malicious. Especially given how quickly an apology has been issued.

gregorum ,

It doesn’t matter what word he used, he was using it in an anti LGBT sentiment.

i think it does matter wrt what he actually said or intended to say. whether he's being homophobic in his position regard gay clergy isn't a matter of debate: he is.

the issue is that he claims not to have intended to use an offensive term, and apologizes for the offense cause by the term. That i'm willing to believe. i'm not debating his gay clergy policy, which i obviously agree is bigoted.

Back in the day, you needed a floppy drive to boot from a CD ROM (or a special reboot command). It wasn’t until a new BIOS firmware came out that allowed you to boot from CD ROM.

Ok, but $40 for 7 hours? You can get a 1-hour flight for $129

We really need more high-speed rail

gregorum ,

i can see it being ok for overnight, actually. like, i'm not against the idea, it's just that it services a narrower range of travel needs due to its long duration.

i'm from NYC, so i'm perfectly happy with train travel, but 7 hours is a long-ass trip.

gregorum ,

You’re not wrong. Plus, the trip on the train is certainly quite scenic.

The benefits, basically, are that it can provide an architecture that is designed for modern computing needs that can scale well into the future. That means high performance with low power consumption and heat.

The x86/64 model has been up against a wall for a while now, pumping out red-hot power hogs that don’t suit modern needs and don’t have much of a path forward wrt development compared to ARM.

I found this very interesting:

Persuading the BBC not to describe sperm whale clicks as “language” in their Blue Planet II series was the highlight of my science communication career. Why?

A lot of complex communication is going on in cetaceans, much of which we still don’t understand. However, I am convinced that we should drop the stifling and anthropocentric focus on language. It crowds out other perspectives on what is going on – for example, the relationship between rhythm-based communication and music might be a better way to understand the bonding function of coda synchrony in sperm whales.

We should be wary of ranking species on a single dimension relative to humans, as if all evolution is a path to something like us (much like early anthropologists ranked societies by their progress toward western “perfection”). Instead, let’s take ourselves off the top of the ladder and see other animals as distinct branches of an evolutionary tree.

I find great logic in the argument of understanding animal communications in relation to the animals themselves rather than their relation to us.

That’s interesting. I’ll check it out.

It wasn’t racism (this time), just an antiquated and sexist attitude towards who should get to wear white wedding dresses (Megan is a divorcée).

gregorum ,
@gregorum@lemm.ee avatar
  1. I’m not seeing that this is the case here. Wearing white wedding dresses is traditionally only for “virgins”. The Queen was the head of the Church of England. It might even be unusual for a 90-year-old head of the church, not to object to something like this.
  2. I think this is a stretch, and assuming rather a lot about someone you don’t know
  3. The queen did object to Camilla wearing a white dress when she married Charles

Ok, let’s wrap this up.

Overall, I rate this a 7/10 troll. 5 base points, plus 1 for sticking with it and another bonus point for that shit about Ned Flanders. That made me laugh so hard, I almost broke character and called you out, but I wanted to see how far you’d take it.

Thanks for the practice. I haven’t had a good one of these since my Reddit days.

Time for bed. See you around, bud
