Hate to break it to you, but the time to do that was over a year ago, and even then it wasn’t ever really a sure thing - we don’t really know what their backup policies are around that stuff.

This is what the former power user community that made an exodus from Reddit roughly a year ago has been trying to communicate, but a ton of people here seem to enjoy keeping their toes in the water over there, with rather predictable consequences (literally, the post we’re commenting on).

All that said: I am very much looking forward to the absolutely titanic lawsuit around GDPR I’m sure is in the works over this.

So, a doctor, sailor, and lecturer walk into a bar…

Qualified experts of Lemmy, do people believe you when you answer questions in your field?

The internet has made a lot of people armchair experts happy to offer their perspective with a degree of certainty, without doing the work to identify gaps in their knowledge. Often the mark of genuine expertise is knowing the limitations of your knowledge....

gravitas_deficiency , (edited )

Well, the thing is, sometimes I don’t even believe me, despite the better part of two decades of experience.

Impostor syndrome kinda sucks.

But at the same time, I’ve come to be suspicious of any engineer who doesn’t have at least a dash of impostor syndrome. It’s always a good reflex to check your assumptions, imo.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Heh, yeah. Spotting DK tendencies is also an important skill, especially when you get to the point where you’re screening candidates for your team. A surprising amount of people think they can just bull through an interview without going into real detail. I have caught more than a few people blatantly misrepresenting their resumes.

Don’t get me wrong - by all means, use a bit of spin to get shit past the HR idiots. When I, as a knowledgeable and experienced engineer, ask you a pointed question about something in particular, I won’t particularly mind if you straight up tell me that you spun that on the res a bit and point out the areas of the domain you’re stronger or weaker. Depending on the context, it might actually work in your favor, because I genuinely appreciate when someone tells me the limits of their knowledge. But if you try to bullshit me, and I catch you, that’s a black mark on your candidacy. And if you keep lying, or try that more than once, I’m going to quickly end the call and remove you from consideration.

I can cite an example for each of the above situations.

It really is a hilariously excellent litmus test to check for vatniks. It’s pretty funny how consistently it works as a honeypot.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Well, some of them do, but are trying to actively misinform others on the topic.

Tbh I’d like it if NATO could just say “right so we’re taking over Ukraine’s IADS and augmenting it with our own stuff”.

US military says Gaza Strip pier project is completed, aid to soon flow as Israel-Hamas war rages on ( apnews.com )

The U.S. military finished installing a floating pier for the Gaza Strip on Thursday, with officials poised to begin ferrying badly needed humanitarian aid into the enclave besieged over seven months of intense fighting in the Israel-Hamas war....

As an American, I would just like to say I’m fucking infuriated by how my government is handling this shit. Moreover, most of us who aren’t in the throes of the Trump cult are at the very least least dismayed with what our government is doing (that is, giving Israel a military aid firehose and doing fuck all to actually try to stop them from committing genocide).

We’ve got several crimes against humanity under our belt. I, for one, would very much like to avoid adding another. But Biden doesn’t seem to give a shit. And this also has the horrifying possibility of throwing the election, which would herald a whole hell of a lot of things that would be terrible for far, far more people in far more places than just Gaza (though, to be clear, Gaza would probably get fully genocided - maybe by US B-52s, if Trump wins it).

I fucking hate our political system so much. It’s so fundamentally and obviously broken, and the only people who can fix it are the same people who benefit from it being broken, so it’s going to stay broken. Who knows what will end up breaking through that deadlock… I’m just getting pretty fucking concerned that it’s gonna involve some political violence sometime soon.

gravitas_deficiency ,

I don’t agree.

I think this is honestly just the typical boomer “back Israel to the hilt because Jewish people got absolutely fucked by the Holocaust”, while simultaneously flat out ignoring the fact that Israel != all Jewish people.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Again, no.

The two things are being treated as the same by the Biden administration.

Don’t ignore nuance. Ignoring nuance is what Netanyahu and the Israeli is actively trying to get everyone to do to, in the interest of giving themselves some geopolitical cover for executing their own “final solution” in Gaza.

Ignoring nuance is also what a lot of other autocrats and populists are trying to do in their own way, including Orban, Modi, Milei, Fico (to whom I wish a very slow, lengthy, and complicated convalescence), Trump, and Putin - along with much (or most) of the political parties behind them. It’s all in the interest of solidifying autocratic power and wealth, and scapegoating problems on people who are not the root cause of said problems (a common populist tactic).

gravitas_deficiency ,

And that zero-sum game thinking is idiotic.

Frankly, if we (read: mainly the US and the UK) made amends with Iran (and I know precisely how enormous of a conditional statement that is), and successfully ameliorate and rationalize their policy towards Israel (i.e. convince them to call off their own frankly genocidal policy towards Israel), that could be the the start of the path towards a much more robust peace in the middle east. It’ll likely take several generations to mellow things to a truly sustainable and reasonable level. But something like that might, I believe, be the start of the path to lasting peace in the Middle East - or at the very least, significantly diminished violence and conflict.

I mean… he fucked it up because one of the primary motivations of his entire goddamn presidency was to just shit in as many punch bowls with which Obama was even remotely affiliated.

Also, he’s deeply racist, and he’s also sore that Obama got a zinger in at the Press Correspondents dinner that one time (for real - but for one joke that a psychopath took poorly, we might have avoided the Trumpian era).

Jesus tapdancing christ he just can’t fucking help scoring an own-goal. What the actual fuck.

I’ve been trying to be as magnanimous and politically pragmatic as I can, but this is straight up idiotic. Come the fuck on, Biden. You are going to throw the whole fucking election if you keep this up.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Because the electoral and voting systems in the US are, respectively, intentionally undemocratic and extremely inconsistent depending on the state.

RCV for national elections would materially address the former, and enforcing RCV as the system to use for all elections at all levels would materially address the latter.

I am not claiming RCV (or any other similar/related system) would be a panacea, but it would be a damn sight better than the intentionally flawed shitshow we have to use now.

I think he kinda does, but at the same time he’s too fucking old and set in his boomer ways. I’m beginning to suspect that he may be incapable of understanding why the youths can’t just sEe tHinGs hiS WaY.

On an unrelated note, I’ll just leave this here.

There's apparently a Reddit activity streak achievement system now. ( lemmy.world )

I just noticed this when I saw a strange "Achievement Unlocked" notification pop up on Reddit. What do you think of this? It seems like a retention tactic to me, like what Amino had with its streak leaderboards, and GameFAQs currently has with streak achievements for logging on ten days in a row and also for all days of a month.

Kneejerk reaction: sounds a whole hell of a lot like the quisling GOP bullshit we’re dealing with in the states.

Anyone from Poland around here who can offer some additional context? I don’t mean to apply the cookie-cutter American lens here, but it does seem like the same cause and effect.

gravitas_deficiency ,

For what it’s worth, there a lot of American exports that we’ve foisted upon the word that I consider incredibly destructive, and it upsets me.

I know I’m privileged for being born here, as a white dude, to an upper middle class family in the 80s. I’ve measurably benefited from it. It distresses me how much that matters. It shouldn’t matter that much.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Just to be clear: I engage in hyperbole probably more than I should, but I think the seriousness of the topic behooves us all to be as unambiguous as possible on this topic.

gravitas_deficiency ,

That is cool. I learned something today, and I learned it from you. Thank you, genuinely.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Side note: finally noticed your username - from another Sanderson enjoyer, cheers!

gravitas_deficiency ,

Bro. The rebates go to the buyer. They don’t go to the corps. It’s specifically targeted to make it cheaper for US residents to buy EVs in America.

Edit: actually, more foundational question: do you understand the difference between production subsidy and purchase rebate? And do you understand that the rebate is not applicable outside of the US?

gravitas_deficiency ,

That is a hilariously myopic and egocentric way of looking at the situation, to the extent that it makes me suspicious that you’re on the conservative spectrum.

gravitas_deficiency ,

I know. I’m trying to dumb it down a bit because the dipshits who argue about this stuff don’t seem to understand the incredible level of complexity of modern-day high tech consumer product manufacturing logistics.

gravitas_deficiency ,

I think I’m gonna block you because you seem like kind of a jerk

gravitas_deficiency ,

…it is bad. It’s particularly bad because the PRC is running the show, and they very certainly do not have the best interest of any group but themselves (as in, the Party, and particularly, the Party Committee) in mind.

gravitas_deficiency ,

The PRC is trying to crush any and all competition. This isn’t them being ecologically friendly or magnanimous in any way. The entire point of this is so they can do the best they can to corner the market, which is easier when the government you operate under just hands you money so you can immediately recoup substantial fraction of your balance sheet liabilities. They are doing this because they want to control the EV market, which will give the PRC a substantial amount of geopolitical power (case in point: look at Taiwan with their chip foundries). And, of course, Party officials and the corporate leadership of their car companies stand to make a fair bit of dosh too.

More broadly, I don’t like when any country does this, including the US. The primary reason I’m singling the PRC out here is because that’s the topic of the post.
