I don't understand why Hamas would reject the deal that was essentially the same as one they agreed to in the past, that was deemed reasonable by Qatar, Egypt, and the UN. It doesn't make sense.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

That's true. There is still hope that Hamas could walk back some of their demands. It just seemed like a done deal. Israel has yet to agree to the terms as well.

Thanks for this morning's WWIII vibes.

Israel has offered multiple ceasefire deals, as has Hamas. They were only able to agree on one and only for a short period.

I feel like linking is one of the things that is still pretty broken in the fediverse. I'm not sure it's fixable. Ideally, any link would open in a chosen app, on my home instance. And I don't use the same instance for Lemmy, Masto, etc.

Tailgating is actually pretty easy to measure - there are specific patterns of braking and acceleration.

Innatention may be measurable too. For example, if an inattentive driver frequently drifts from the center of the lane and makes small quick corrections periodically, that would be apparent from accelerometer data.

Pixelfed looks like they are doing a huge push to get up to speed. It has been an immature app/platform for a long time and slow to get the features that people need from a photo sharing social media.

According to their mastodon, they are working for better AI management features, and launching an app that will make it a genuinely positive experience.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

the crowdfunding/patronage of this platform only helps them build their proprietary empire. It's like giving money to your neighbor who wants to build a swimming pool on their property because they promise you'll be able to swim in it.

This is a pretty good commentary I found that explains what this probably means. I don't agree with all of it, but it's a solid read.

I don't know what is happening here but I can't stop watching.

Israel’s obstruction of investigation into 7 October rape allegations risks truth never being found, advocates warn ( www.middleeastmonitor.com )

Israel’s leadership is pushing the allegations that Hamas fighters raped Israeli women during the October 7 attacks for its own political objectives while the government’s ongoing refusal to allow the United Nations to conduct a full investigation into the matter threatens to hinder any evidence, advocates have warned.

What concentration camps? What are you talking about? You are literally just making this up.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

It looks like you sent the wrong link. This article is related to prison abuse and has nothing to with concentration camps.

Not surprising, since as I said, they do not exist.

This is actually a really famous and interesting copyright case that established some important bounds of copyright. How much of an artist's intent is necessary to claim copyright? Can an artist set up a situation in which some creative product is produced?

There is actually a lot of animal photography that is dependent on the animal itself to trigger the camera, such as trail photos or even those cute photos of squirrels interacting with dollhouse furniture like tiny little humans. There is a lot of meticulous planning, experimentation, and patience that goes into "spontaneous" photographs.

‘Exterminate the beasts’: How Israeli settlers took revenge for a murder in the West Bank ( www.bbc.com )

What followed was a wave of shooting and arson attacks across 11 Palestinian villages in which a dozen homes and more than 100 cars were torched, thousands of animals were slaughtered, four people were shot dead and scores of others were seriously wounded.

These groups are like the Israeli Hamas - religious fundamentalists who just want violence. The only thing that separates them in my mind is the lack of political power and billions in funding. Unfortunately, they are gradually increasing in both power and funding under the likes of Smotrich and Ben-Gvir.

Hamas has an annual budget between $600 million and $2.5 billion.

At this point, it seems like google is just a platform to message a google employee to go google it for you.

Google Search’s “udm=14” trick lets you kill AI search for good | Ars Technica ( arstechnica.com )

Tack "&udm=14" on to the end of a normal search, and you'll be booted into the clean 10 blue links interface. While Google might not let you set this as a default, if you have a way to automatically edit the Google search URL, you can create your own defaults.

Checks out.

What is the Legal copyright on a Lemmy Post?

Most instances don't have a specific copyright in their ToS, which is basically how copyright is handled on corporate social media (Meta/X/Reddit owns license rights to whatever you post on their platform when you click "Agree"). I've noticed some people including Copyright notices in posts (mostly to prevent AI use). Is this...

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

In legal terms, what does that mean? Every post is presumed to be public domain? Or in the process of posting, is there an implied license to generate unlimited copies for the purposes of federation? If someone likes a post and decides to make it into a chapter in their book, which they sell, is the original author entitled to attribution? To compensation?

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

They just said it was a statement of principle as much as anything.

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

There's a bit more to it than just that

BY - attribution is required

NC - as you said, cannot be used for commercial purposes

SA - Share Alike -anything using it must be shared under a similar license.

Unpopular opinion: "the other side is just bots" is the new "the other side is just paid protestors."

Bot warfare is a very real and very serious form of information warfare but the idea that any particular political actor is using it disproportionately is pretty difficult to prove. This article, for example, identifies a study which found a third of internet traffic is made up of "bad bots." The study shows that the VAST majority of bad bot traffic is targeting Gaming (virtual currency farming), IT (DDoS), and Data Scraping, with propaganda bots making up less than 2%.

gedaliyah ,

It is definitely a "quirk" of lemmy. When I've brought it up, the answer I got was basically, "everything on Lemmy is public, so blocking wouldn't do anything."

That's not how it works on most other social media (for example in mastodon, which is similarly public), but there you have it.

I just saw an old interview recently where the interviewer was sharing how they were always so touched by the deep symbolism of flight and freedom and light mixed with dark and then Dave was just like, "I wrote it when I was planning to get my pilot's license."

Building My Home Server | Kev Quirk ( kevquirk.com )

I came across this blog today while searching and I'm finding it very detailed, human, and instructive. For a beginner like me, this kind of resource is invaluable. What are some important things that have changed in the past five years that would change some if the choices?

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks, this is one of the few truly beginner-friendly blogs I've found (not just this post, but the entire blog). It would be great for people to suggest some other more up-to-date resources for someone starting out. Specifically, this blog talks about trying and comparing different setups, factoring in costs, time commitments, dealing with setbacks, preparing for different use cases, etc.

There are lots of resources that share technical details, how-tos, system specs, etc., but not many that I've found walking through the decision making process including what worked and what didn't and why.
