@actuallyautistic anyone else tired of always having to be the better person at work?

@filmfreak75 @actuallyautistic Any abuse at all at work is just damn wrong. Sorry the place you work doesn't get that, that's horrible.

filmfreak75 OP ,
@filmfreak75@mastodon.social avatar

@fishidwardrobe @actuallyautistic it's a lot of passive aggressive stuff so it's more subtle and harder to actual bring up to powers that be

@actuallyautistic any advice on how to tactfully tell co-workers who are excessively using Teams chat that you’re not interested in the chatter without coming across as “uncooperative", “rude", “not a team player" etc.

@actuallyautistic just started yet another documentary series on Jonestown (my 4th now), and while i consider movies/tv and true crime among my special interests, is watching multiple versions of something on the same topic a special interest or just a part of the master ones?

also, this new series is by far the worst so far -- very superficial. all the others have given me new information that the others had not.

@actuallyautistic what are everyone’s thoughts on signing cards (birthday, etc.) at work, where you do not really know the person, but there is an implied expectation that you do so

filmfreak75 OP ,
@filmfreak75@mastodon.social avatar

@fishidwardrobe @actuallyautistic true, but it still feels insincere

fishidwardrobe ,
@fishidwardrobe@social.tchncs.de avatar

@filmfreak75 @actuallyautistic I find that very little about work -- or at least the social aspect of work -- is anything close to sincere.

I look at the signing thing as camouflage. I do the team lottery, too, and the sweepstake at Grand National time.

I draw the line at Secret Santa. ::shudder::

@willaful

I tend to keep personal information (and I consider this personal) to myself, or share it only with a very small group. Telling someone else, in my experience, lets them feel free to offer their opinions. About me. Unsolicited. I'm uncomfortable with that.

filmfreak75 OP ,
@filmfreak75@mastodon.social avatar

@ScottSoCal @willaful @actuallyautistic i briefly thought about disclosing at work to try to put them on notice that they were acting discriminatory to a person under a protected class, but realized it wouldn't change their behavior at the end of the day

@actuallyautistic i do a lot of meeting requests and receive a lot of emails that start like this:

"Good morning!

I hope you all had excellent weekends.”

I start mine like this, and because of this, am considered an asshole:

“[Name] would like to set up a one hour call on this topic. Please let me know if any of the following times work:”

…because heaven forbid we be efficient and clear in our communication

bhawthorne ,
@bhawthorne@infosec.exchange avatar

@filmfreak75 @actuallyautistic I just realized that my lack of small-talk in email made people think I was a jerk. I am now doing my best to include plenty of small talk so they will know for sure that I am a jerk.

ScottSoCal ,
@ScottSoCal@computerfairi.es avatar

@bhawthorne

A co-worker of mine is determined, in a friendly way, to force me into small talk. When I need to go see him about something he wants me to greet, ask customary questions (How are you?) Habit on his part is to protest by saying "We don't sleep together, so you can't just demand." He stopped saying that - or laughs after he says it - because I responded with "That's not my fault, you're the straight one."

@actuallyautistic has anyone had a supervisor act so passive aggressively all the time it feels like they are goading you into a meltdown?

punkcoder ,
@punkcoder@defcon.social avatar

@filmfreak75 @actuallyautistic Yes... and speaking as someone who had a meltdown, ended up in the hospital because of it, then returned to the bad situation to almost have it happen again (because of people pleasing issues). If you are having a moment when you have the clarity to see what is going on, trust your instincts, they will not hesitate to throw you to the wind when it's in their best instance. Protect yourself and do what's best for you.

I hope it works out for you, this is an awful situation for ASD people.

filmfreak75 OP ,
@filmfreak75@mastodon.social avatar

@punkcoder @actuallyautistic this particular asshole has been doing things for the past 5 years and i was only diagnosed a few months ago so i never know anymore.

i work from home primarily now (and trying to make that permanent) so my meltdown moments are at least in private.

Trivia: In the more recent Davies Miniseries "It's a Sin" there is a scene that plays on the set of Doctor Who (not labelled as such, I think).

He stated that it's a tribute to Dursley McLinden, an actor who played a part in the 1980s episode "Remembrance of the Daleks" and became an AIDS activist. Davies met him shortly before his death.
