fiercekitten , to Ask Lemmy in Do you dream? How often?

That's fascinating! I can remember snippets from hundreds, if not thousands of my dreams, but it takes me at least 60-90 minutes to fall asleep each night.

fiercekitten , to micromobility - Ebikes, scooters, longboards: Whatever floats your goat, this is micromobility in E-Bikes Should Not Require Pedaling, Proposes U.K. Government, Diverging From E.U.

You bring up a key factor here: mass. A traditional bicycle weighing 10kg, going 20kph has far less force/momentum than a 35kg ebike going the same speed, and when using the throttle, the acceleration rate from 0 to 20kph increases dramatically as well.

Currently in the US we have people riding class 3 ebikes (and particularly cargo bikes) that can have base weights of 70 or 80 lbs, plus the weight of the cargo, all going at 28mph with a throttle. That's too much momentum to be safe around pedestrians and other bicyclists on multi-use trails.

IMO once ebikes start getting up to 750+ watt motors with a base weight of over 65 lbs, they should probably require some kind of licensing to operate, and perhaps insurance as well.

Class 1 is 15 mph pedal assisted, class two is 20 mph pedal assisted

This is incorrect. Class 1 is pedal-assisted only, up to 20mph. Class 2 ebikes have a throttle that can power the bikes up to 20 mph without pedaling.

I have no heard a man express what you would call a toxic opinion in like twenty years.

Your personal experience is not representative of the experience of the rest of the world. Though I am very glad that this has been your experience!

I don't disagree that both men and women do heinous things, but women don't almost never physically attack or kill a man when he shuns her advances, but men absolutely attack women every day for shunning a man's advances, and sometimes women get straight up murdered for it.

, but enough men that many women choose the bear.

fiercekitten , (edited ) to Asklemmy in People without a family, how are you faring in life?

Pretty well now!

The short short version is: kicked out at 19, family never spoke to me again.

Lived with friends for a few months. Got a job and my own apartment. Struggled hard for three years. Quit my job due to anxiety attacks. Became broke and suicidal. A friend paid for my food and rent for the next year.

Another friend’s mom let me live at her house for the next three years. Started working again. Met someone, moved in together, got married. Life was good until til it wasn’t. Got divorced after being together for seven years. Moved across the country. Moved in with friend who once paid for my food and rent and we started dating. Went back to school. Went to therapy. Got married again. Life is good.

Without friends and the kindness of strangers, I would have been homeless, and I wouldn’t be here.

You currently have two downvotes for sharing your personal, factual, non-offensive experience. I’m not sure if the downvotes were meant to be cheeky but they certainly validate your post!

My dad was quick to judge things and people that were different than him, and that included not liking or accepting LGBT+ people. He would also regularly and half-jokingly threaten my siblings and me with violence if we did something he didn’t like; his favorite saying was “i’ll put your head through the wall”.

Needless to say that once I discovered my queerness, I knew I could never trust my father or tell him. He had conditioned me to be afraid of him. I came out to him at 19 and was kicked out of the house and he’s never spoken to me since. He also kicked out my older sister for dating a guy my dad didn’t approve of, but at least he still spoke to her after that.

Please don’t do things that would make your kids afraid of you. It messes kids up in a big way when they can’t trust their caregivers.

Thank you for mentioning this. I think it’s really important and often overlooked because it’s shrugged off as “dads will be dads” behavior.

fiercekitten , to Technology in ByteDance prefers TikTok shutdown in US if legal options fail, sources say

Yes, but this is not the way. The US needs federal privacy laws that would regulate all these tech companies. Instead, congress shows that they don't care about the privacy of US Americans; they just don't trust China.

Then, in one of the biggest FUs ever to the constitution, they expand the FISA amendment.
