The catch? This is a China release. You get 1 years of standard and 3 years of extended warranty. The global variant would be unlikely to offer this at all.
The majority of the antibiotics we produce are given to animals in factory farms, at doses so high they shit out the bulk of it. This contaminates the soil, streams and lakes with antibiotics, resulting in resistant bacteria. The best part? Antibiotics are sometimes given to healthy animals to fatten them up. (This last bit is illegal in the EU and now China also.)
There are something like a hundred chip factories across the world. TSMC itself has around 20 (mostly in Taiwan). One dying would definitely raise prices, but we won't be losing 'most modern technology'. And of course they'd have lightning cables; they aren't idiots.
Yes, TSMC makes the chips for iPhones, as well as Snapdragon processors used by many (but not all) high-end Android phones. Samsung has their own factory in South Korea, and Huawei has theirs in mainland China. Further, low-end smartphones and most dumbphones use Unisoc chips that are made in China.
As for desktop computers, Intel has factories in the US, and AMD (GlobalFoundries) in Germany and Singapore.
for the vast majority of the history of money it was based on a commodity that was valuable in its own sense.
True, but using grain or tools as a currency would make the modern financial system pretty much impossible. Even for simple banking, you need something small and light like gold or currency notes.
Yes, gold is a commodity, but when used as currency it is acting as a medium of exchange and not as a commodity. Same with pieces of paper with the sign of the reserve bank governor, or data on a computer's memory. The gold, paper and hard disc all have intrinsic value, but when used as currency they are assigned an arbitrarily higher face value.
When you have commodity money, the value of the money is derived from the value of the commodity.
The value of the commodity acts as a floor, but the face value is dictated by supply and demand, and demand usually exceeds supply, driving it significantly above the floor. Take gold, for example. Gold's intrinsic values are (1) it's pretty and can be used to make decorative items, and (2) it has some applications in electronics. It can't be eaten, can't be worn, and it's too soft even to make tools out of it. Yet, its extrinsic value is huge, because it is publically seen as a good medium of exchange and so a lot of people want it.
Hi. I’ve been afraid of all non-human life since before I could remember. I got past it, mostly, but I’ve never gotten over the fact that animals can’t speak what they mean....
In your current situation, it would probably not be a great idea to have a cat dependent on you. As someone else said, you can try volunteering at a shelter (if there is one) or feed street cats (if there isn't one).
As for how they think, cats love food, and most like being petted. However, they are very shy animals, so unless you want to get scratched, it is better to let the cat come to you. Feeding them, sitting still, not speaking loudly, and slowly blinking at them can calm them down.
The majority of cats like to be gently stroked on the sides of the face and the neck, and do not like being touched on their bellies, feet or tails (unless they've known you for a while).
If you are the only person feeding the cat, make sure to include some meat or fish. Adult cats should not be given milk, chocolates, spices or too much salt.
A gradual decline in population is a good thing, so they probably don't want to overshoot too much. Also maybe the minorities pushed for keeping some restrictions.
Current economies are basically dependent on a growing population to support the elderly and retired members of the population.
This applies only when labour is in short supply. Japan and Germany have heavily automated their industry for this reason, and China seems to be on this track.
Apart from the labour shortage, a gradually declining population is a good thing. The earth can only give us so many resources, and unless we reduce our numbers - particularly among the rich - we are headed towards extinction.

We have had very smart people working on climate change models for decades and no one ever looked into that?
The problem isn't that no one has looked into it. The problem - and this is a general one for any scientist working in climate change or environmental protection - is that we can't afford to raise a single false alarm. We can't publish bad news unless we're 100% certain, because that will give oil companies' lawyers and 'journalists' enough ammo for the next fifty years. This means that published climate predictions are usually the most optimistic and conservative estimates.
At this point, when someone says they are 'against Israel', what they mean is that they are against the genocide the Israeli army is carrying out in Gaza. Maybe there are some who want the country itself toppled - neo-Nazis, for example, or those detached from reality - but they are a small minority (outside of Iran, perhaps).
If it is peace that the Israeli politicians want, why do they fund Hamas?
Also, ever wondered where Hamas - living in a place under such a strict embargo that people don't have enough food to eat - gets the explosives for its rockets?
This meme isn't about you (hopefully). Not everything is about you or your fellows. If this meme triggers you, there's something seriously wrong with you. I hope you are just a snowflake, because the alternative is a lot worse.
Pythons do attack children, although a grown woman is probably safe. Many small venomous snakes are attracted to the warmth of sleeping humans, and don't take too kindly to the human rolling over / swatting at them in their sleep.
A hungry bear is able to sniff, track and actively hunt you.
The vast majority of bear attacks occur when the human either accidentally ambushes the bear, or goes near a bear cub. Afaik only male polar bears hunt humans, and they do it extremely rarely, only as a last resort.
I couldn't find details on this particular model, but all Nokia dumbphones released so far have easily removeable batteries and can be used as a murder weapon in a pinch.
Potassium deficiency in agricultural soils is a largely unrecognised but potentially significant threat to global food security if left unaddressed, finds new research involving researchers at UCL, University of Edinburgh and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology....
Pretty sure there are crops you can rotate in that replenish the soil.
Potassium is produced by breaking down potassium-rich rocks. Plants cannot replenish it like they replenish nitrogen.
There’s also a literal shitload of organic waste that humans generate that can be used for a similar purpose instead of burying it in landfills.
We do produce a lot of potassium-rich waste - sewage and food waste, for example - but most of it is also rich in other nutrients. So you can add a little of it, but adding too much of it can cause other problems (like eutrophication).
The other solution is to buy potassium fertiliser. A significant amount of this is produced in Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine, and I'm guessing its trade is being affected by the ongoing war.
