People did improve society, they made Matrix and XMPP.

The seatbelts already exist, you just need to use them.

The pirates innovated and made content available long before the corporations did.

Before streaming services took off, it was the only way to get movies and music (besides some IRC rooms). There were even a few golden years where movies would get leaked to torrents in full quality, before the theatrical release.

Music too was easier to find on napster, limewire, and torrents, than your local music store.

With a few more additions, lemmy could serve as a good replacement. We already have a Forum / NewComments sort which is perfect for question / answer type communities. We could add a feature to make default sorts for specific communities, so they would feel less fast, or possibly a sort that brings zero comment posts (IE meaning unanswered), to the top.

The reputation and "accepted answer" features from SO are a lot less important than threaded comments can be, especially since questions often need new answers every year, making the "accepted answer" pointless.

From Losurdo - A critique of the category of totalitarianism:

Nowadays we constantly hear denunciations, directed toward Islam, of ‘religious totalitarianism’ or of the ‘new totalitarian enemy that is terrorism’. The language of the Cold War has reappeared with renewed vitality, as confirmed by the warning that American Senator Joseph Lieberman has issued to Saudi Arabia: beware the seduction of Islamic totalitarianism, and do not let a ‘theological iron curtain’ separate you from the Western world.

Even though the target has changed, the denunciation of totalitarianism continues to function with perfect efficiency as an ideology of war against the enemies of the Western world. And this ideology justifies the violation of the Geneva Convention, the inhuman treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, the embargo and collective punishment inflicted upon the Iraqis and other peoples, and the further torment perpetrated against the Palestinians. The struggle against totalitarianism serves to legitimate and transfigure the total war against the ‘barbarians’ who are alien to the Western world.

To add, there is only one country on earth with > 800 external military bases, and through an incredibly effective propanda campaign, they've managed to convince the world that its not them, but their enemies that are "totalitarian" and "authoritarian".

I'd like to add that the nordic countries are not socialist by any metric.

Also, we shouldn't be so quick to trust western media on the DPRK, who have gotten to the point that they can literally say anything about their enemies, and have it be believed.

That chart is pretty great, because it shows that only a tiny minority of US states have smaller incarceration rates than Russia.

I don't care about dorsey or whatever, but a lot of privacy advocates don't consider signal secure, drew devault for example. I'm def among them, you should not trust any centralized US-hosted service.

dessalines ,
@dessalines@lemmy.ml avatar

You shouldn't need to trust open source, it should be independently verifiable. Unfortunately that's not possible with either signal or telegram, as there's no way to tell what server code they're running.

Haha no, but we do have some things inside lemmy to make it better suited for question / answer communities, like the forum / new comments sort. But ya I'd be down to hear ideas on how to make lemmy better for that purpose.

dessalines ,
@dessalines@lemmy.ml avatar

Zionism is a settler-colonialist ideology dedicated to the eviction and genocide of the indigenous inhabitants of Palestine. We don't allow them or their defenders a platform here, so you'll have to go to reddit if you want to see people defending their atrocities.

If you're looking at the All tab, there is no difference between a local post, or a federated post when it comes to sorting.

Lemmy's sorts are described here.

dessalines Mod ,
@dessalines@lemmy.ml avatar

I was talking about non-local posts. It's really hard to tell what you're asking. Click the all button, and now you'll see federated posts in addition to local ones.

If they made all top-level comments thus suppressing all other activity on the post, what would that mean?

I can't figure out what this means. New comments are also sorted as hot by default, if you read the doc I linked.

Every single one of the US's amendments came not through voting, or within the political system itself. Every single one was accompanied by violent and disruptive protest and the threat from the masses below.

dessalines ,
@dessalines@lemmy.ml avatar

That's truly one of the worst things about brain drain / educated people moving to the imperial core countries for the high salaries. Global south countries really need educated young people helping to solve their own problems, and Canada and the US rip out their heart and soul.

At least in tech / programming, a good chunk of us are devoting most of our labor time to not just wasteful things, but actively harmful things, like trying to get people to click on ads, or increasing viral engagement.

dessalines ,
@dessalines@lemmy.ml avatar

Or maybe those corporate boroughs in Snow Crash.

dessalines ,
@dessalines@lemmy.ml avatar

This is the correct answer. These "things are getting worse" terms are on the right track, but they don't describe why things are getting worse.

Class-based systems like feudalism and capitalism have overarching rising and falling phases, and in the late phases, exploitation of our labor increases drastically as the ruling classes fight over a declining surplus. This has rippling effects to every other aspect of society, from how hard we're forced to work, to the degradation of media, art, politics, etc.

Capitalism, specifically late stage capitalism.

You also made me think of this relevant quote by Lenin:

People always have been the foolish victims of deception and self-deception in politics, and they always will be, until they have learnt to seek out the interests of some class or other behind all moral, religious, political and social phrases, declarations and promises.

dessalines ,

I think the chat bots are, but the upvote bots sure know how to push the most rage-inducing and high-engagement posts to the top. Twitter, youtube, and reddit are very good at that now.

Economic power supercedes everything else. On what basis would a weaker, less wealthy country "control", a much stronger one?

Only Cable News Viewers Think Israel isn't Committing a Genocide, Survey Finds ( theintercept.com )

Americans who get their news primarily from cable are the only people who believe that Israel is not committing a genocide in Gaza, according to a new survey that examined the relationship between attitudes toward the war and news consumption habits....

dessalines ,
@dessalines@lemmy.ml avatar

I talked to a boomer fox news watcher recently, and apparently the current party line is that since the US firebombed dresden, what Israel is doing to Gaza is justified. The US even bombed white europeans, so how can you criticize them for killing middle-easterners?

IE, nothing wrong with murdering civilians as long as the US did it first, and to criticize Israel for doing what the US already did is unpatriotic, and the protesters have no right to protest this genocide.

At least the US right is honest about their values, and make no justifications or apologies for civilian murder.

The "Chinese steal everything and are expert copy-cats" is an orientalist trope with a few hundred years of history. White supremacists are still repeating it to this day, and in this thread.

To update everyone:

In getting ready for the upcoming lemmy release, we usually deploy a test release here on lemmy.ml (the dev instance) for a few days, to discover any issues for a large production server, so other people don't have to.

We found a performance issue with this one, so we downgraded back to 0.19.3, and restored from a database backup made a few hours ago.

I apologize for the few hours of downtime that caused today.

One I didn't see yet: Radio.

Less than 150 years old, and has vitally changed how we communicate, and has downstream effects on every other human activity.

Kind of magical having streams of information travelling all around us.

Jukebox the ghost. Criminally underrated, they'd have been as big as queen or muse if they had the right publicity and timing.

The Tallest Man on Earth. Probably the best modern folk artist, but not as well known as he should be.

Aimee Mann. One of the best songwriters of the 90s and 2000s. Popular, but not as much as she should be.

Placebo.

Talk Talk. Spirit of Eden is one of the greatest albums ever made, but not many people know about it.

Thank you for your service.

Some people including OP are completely missing the point of torrenting, which is to share, not leech. If everyone removed their torrents like the OP, everything would quickly become unavailable and die.

IMO a better strategy is to just limit your global upload speed. Then at least you're still making everything healthy and available, even if its distributed slowly.
