Is it practically impossible for a newcomer selfhost without using centralised services, and get DDOSed or hacked?

I understand that people enter the world of self hosting for various reasons. I am trying to dip my toes in this ocean to try and get away from privacy-offending centralised services such as Google, Cloudflare, AWS, etc....

Of course security comes with layers, and if you're not comfortable hosting services publically, use a VPN.

However, 3 simple rules go a long way:

  1. Treat any machine or service on a local network as if they were publically accesible. That will prevent you from accidentally leaving the auth off, or leaving the weak/default passwords in place.

  2. Install services in a way that they are easy to patch. For example, prefer phpmyadmin from debian repo instead of just copy pasting the latest official release in the www folder. If you absolutely need the latest release, try a container maintained by a reasonable adult. (No offense to the handful of kids I've known providing a solid code, knowledge and bugreports for the general public!)

  3. Use unattended-upgrades, or an alternative auto update mechanism on rhel based distros, if you don't want to become a fulltime sysadmin. The increased security is absolutely worth the very occasional breakage.

  4. You and your hardware are your worst enemies. There are tons of giudes on what a proper backup should look like, but don't let that discourage you. Some backup is always better than NO backup. Even if it's just a copy of critical files on an external usb drive. You can always go crazy later, and use snapshotting abilities of your filesystem (btrfs, zfs), build a separate backupserver, move it to a different physical location... sky really is the limit here.

Lemmy is a failed Reddit alternative

I first joined Lemmy back during the big Reddit exodus of last year. I like many others wanted an alternative to Reddit, and I thought that this might've been the one. I made two accounts, one on lemmy.world and another on sh.itjust.works, in the June of last year that I used on and off for about 4 months....

Being mainstream is exactly what I liked about reddit. It was the reincarnation of usenet. It has attracted all kinds of people doing all kinds of thing. Are you interested in swastika knitting? Piano jumping? Bathsponge sculpting? You can sure as hell find at least 2 other guys already doing it there.

DIY Supermaterial Could Save You From Heatstroke: Salt based PCMs ( www.youtube.com )

A simple mix of two cheap salts, Sodium Sulfate and Table Salt (Sodium Chloride) dissolved in boiling water can create a really useful Phase Change Material that has a melting point of 18c (65f) which allows it to be recharged back into it's cooling state simply by putting it in a basement and can then be used as a cooling...

I have not. But now after I've not seen any kind of explanation, I still don't.

They took something I love, and made it into... no. Let me rephrase...

During the communist party reign, the artists producing undesirable art often ended up slaving in uranium mines. I think it's time to revisit this tradition.

I do love lego. Some things just feel wrong, though.

Is there any significance to people using emojis that match their skin tone?

I'm asking because as a light-skinned male, I always use the standard Simpsons yellow. I don't really see other light-skinned people using an emoji that matches their skin tone, but often do see people of color use them. Maybe white people don't naturally realize a need to be explicit with emoji skin-tone or perhaps it's seen as...

deafboy ,
@deafboy@lemmy.world avatar

Emoji is a failed concept anyway, because what you send is not necessary what the recipient gets. Why the app developers don't get this, is one of the great mysteries of our century.

But when I do use them, I choose the yellow ones.

No need to avoid such stores, just wear a protection to avoid your face from being falsely flagged.

Plug-in systems are built around a microinverter that feeds solar energy back into the home via a standard wall jack.

What the actual fuck?

The PowerStream has three proprietary ports: one that connects to your MC4 solar panels

Disqualified.

That goes against the entire history of currencies.

How come? Decentralized currencies were in place long before the dictators enforced their own private currencies on to all their subjects.

The only thing worse than unskipable ads are the waiting screens (press a button to continue) in front of the loading screens.

I mean, the machine is capable of billions of operations per second. Why is it waiting for ME to push a button?

They totally are. It was quite surprising, because I've only ever watched an HDTV rip before, and the scene looked fine there.

I HATE to put on a tinfoil hat, but this is the best thing that could have happened to the ruling party. They are already in the middle of dismantling the media and justice. This will accelerate the process.

I wouldn't say he's a fascist. He only ever presents what the majority of the voters wants to hear.

Every time the party needs a new demographic on board, he either changes the rethoric, or, if it's a taboo topic, allies himselves with people not afraid of breaking that taboo.

I still have this, but suspect it's bricked after I've pressed the "do not press" button on the side. (i'm a filthy button pusher) If anybody has some firmware dumps or at least documentation, I'd appreciate it.

Never managed to use the brainwaves, but it was sensitive to the facial muscle movement. Good enough to play pong.

Pretty amazing... that apple allows access to the sensors, and provides an option to mirror the screen over HDMI! Given how touchy feely they were about openning the NFC stack, this is truly unbelievable.

deafboy ,

The best way to do on-device AI would still be a standard SoC. We tend to forget that these mass produced mobile SoCs are modern miracles for the price, despite the crapy software and firmware support from the vendors.

No small startup is going to revolutionize this space unless some kind of new physics is discovered.

Just frame it as a success. Like our GM.

GM: Roll a d100

Player: rolls

GM: You've turned into a fairy.

Player: What...

GM: And as you look at yourself, you notice you're naked.

Player: But I've rolled 90 out of a 100!

GM: Yes. The fairy IS actually the GOOD outcome!
