I agree you already need a license to drive a semi trucks I believe but just as someone who dailys a little itty bitty BMW z3 and works at a Toyota dealership and has driven 60s international harvesters anything bigger than a jeep wrangler takes time getting used to being tall and bulky hell I've seen people driving in the middle of the road because they got acclimated to driving a corrola and just hopped into a f150 as a man who has flipped my ATV making trails off roading no matter what your in you need to be instructed on the ins and outs of off roading I'm so onboard for making a sort of truck driving license

One pretty big factor to these getting bought is due to safety and for that reason I feel like we as a society has prioritized driver safety that we have sacrificed pedestrian safety

creditCrazy ,
@creditCrazy@lemmy.world avatar

Eh most of your points kinda proves my point of how we have been sacrificing pedestrian safety for driver safety the only considerable counterpoint you brought up is how SUVs are more prone to rollover and from what I understand about cars getting bigger is so crashing is less deadly but by being bigger you also make crashing more inevitable so I guess that's a bit of a stalemate argument

Yeah crumple zones are enforced by the bumper so when you lift a car you're making the colliding car smash into the other above the bumper and gliding above the crumple zone if I recall the Ford pento was unfairly judged because the cars that were used to rate it's rear end crash safety had their front ends waghted down to simulate heavy breaking however it caused the cars to not only have more weight than normal but they also ramed into the pento going under the crumple zone and directly into the gas tank so I guess you can also make a argument for lowered SUVs and trucks to be just as bad as lifted trucks and suvs

Id be a bit careless to say they are a hundred percent harmless but over all they are really shy and cerous creatures id probably say you were being just as shy and careful about them as they were being towards you so yeah they have the strength and weight to crush you and rip you apart but they at most accidentally use that capability bulls on the other hand as far as I'm informed are kinda like 100 ton dogs

With a lot of fine art I can see your point but Stonehenge as far as I understand is something we don't understand the propose of and is so old I would hardly call it art anymore and moreso a historical site of study it might've been a art piece when new maybe it was a place of worship or maybe it was a home we don't know so yea Id say vandalizing Stonehenge is absolutely on par with vandalizing a book but at least books in this time have plenty of carbon copies and easily replaced and duplicated but there's only one Stonehenge and we don't have the knowledge to replace or even repair it we don't even know the full history of what it even was there's unknown knowledge yet to be understood

@creditCrazy@lemmy.world avatar

Looking at people talking about just stop oil I really do think the last thing you said is something a lot of protesters regardless of movement or message if you just annoy people your going to just make people pissed at you rather than with you I don't care what you're protesting get off the road

creditCrazy ,
@creditCrazy@lemmy.world avatar

I will admit not much as most the value of Stonehenge is knowledge we don't know yet but here we are getting up in arms over a vandalized public library which 99percent of the time carys 100 percent manufactured books you can go to your local library and destroy their copy of the giving tree and while your community will have to wait to be able to read the giving tree again your public library can always order a new copy of the giving tree and even if somehow every physical copy of the giving tree got destroyed you can go online and find a PDF scan of the giving tree and print it out to make a new copy of the giving tree meanwhile you can think of Stonehenge as a book in a forgotten language that no one can understand yet and before we can figure out what Stonehenge is trying to say someone burns it and while yeah nothing changes in our lives because we didn't understand it yet but now that ass hole just prevented us all from ever getting the chance to understand and read the tail of Stonehenge I'm not even a millionaire but even I want to know the story but if Stonehenge got destroyed then I'd be depraved of the chance to read my version of the giving tree

What do you think the Great Filter is?

The Great Filter is the idea that, in the development of life from the earliest stages of abiogenesis to reaching the highest levels of development on the Kardashev scale, there is a barrier to development that makes detectable extraterrestrial life exceedingly rare. The Great Filter is one possible resolution of the Fermi...

In my sci Fi that I've been working on has this theory being true but I also play with asking what is the point of colonization. In my story humans have colonized mars to study the fossils and what life used to be like on Mars. However the people there after a few generations separate from earth. Earth doesn't do anything about it because not only can mars use telescopes to see our ipbm years before it arrives and have that time to shoot our ipbm before it arrives but invasion will destroy the fossils we care about. And that's all assuming history won't just repeat itself. Eventually the mars colony expands until it breaks into different nations all fighting echother to become the first martin superpower. So everything that earth cares about gets destroyed by war anyway and earth is pointless to mars without life and water. Eventually the sun becomes so old that everyone feels the need to move their populations to another solar system. And only then de humans discover alien life. Only to discover that it's currently 900 billion years beyond 2024 and aliens are just now figuring out radio waves and rockets and are more concerned about developing eugenics than discovering humans.

@creditCrazy@lemmy.world avatar

While that is true I would counter point that humans have a bit of a handicap as earth got hit by a big astroid that killed just about everything on it making terran life have to start all over again but at the other hand I saw someone else on here mentioned that oil has given us a head start at space ferrang advancement and oil is made from dead life so granted I haven't done much reacerch on how oil forms naturally but I do wonder if we would have oil if earth never got blown up but on top of all that there are theorys that mars used to have life so if astroids haven't interfered with our solar system intelligent life may have formed faster and maybe twice also there used to be multiple species of humans in the past so maybe 4 or five times in the same solar system

Why not serve fried chicken on Juneteenth? How is it different from serving corned beef on St. Patrick’s day? ( old.lemmy.world )

Disclaimer: I am not trolling, I am an autistic person who doesn’t understand so many social nuances. Also I am from New Hampshire (97% white), so I just don’t have any close African-American friends that I am willing to risk asking such a loaded question.

I suppose I'm in a similar situation with ppl in Vermont you don't really get to socialize with people and the few people you come across are never black. Infact I recall actually learning about fried chicken and watermelon being racist from the backlash from the school you just mentioned.

As an American I'm just questioning why we should care about this conflict. At least with Ukraine there's a lot of nations that want to invade America basically testing their new toys. That might be used against us in the future. But Palestine v humas are two small nations I've never heard of fighting in a part of the world that has been in constant chaos for as long as I've been alive. So it's kinda hard for me to ask what's new. Especially when I as a sitizen struggle to afford a home eat own a car or get a decent paying job. All the while taxes are getting higher and higher with each month. Yet somehow my government that struggles to keep me alive is somehow well off enough to send more money I can even comprehend to conflicts in a shit hole part of the world. Couldn't even be bothered enough to consider sending a dime of that money towards helping Africans feed themselves or get them drinkable water. No just gonna blow all that cash on guns.

At least they aren't riveting badges onto cars anymore I've heard that used to be super common during the 60s and 70s Personally I hate how my 56 bel air has a AAA of Syracuse screwed into the bodywork of my trunk so even if I remove it there's still going to be a hole in my trunk so I'm personally pretty glad all this branding today are just decals and stickers that can easily be removed with a eraser wheel or plastic blades

I've been working on a sci Fi show where humans have this but they also have the ability to change their current physiology by infecting themselves with modified strains of cancer that slowly replaces you're body with one you downloaded off the Internet this technology has also sorta obsoleted medicine because if you have a broken leg or infected with a fatel desese so long as the injury doesn't affect your brain you can just replace your entire body by infecting yourself with genetically modified cancer

Yeah once I found these balls on my porch that kinda looked like frog eggs but where too small and not blonde together like frog eggs and at that kind of situation what do you even put in the search bar and reverse image searches only gave me pictures of frog eggs only when I made the post on Lemmy that I found out what chia seeds look like and that's what I was looking at

Probably one of the smartest tiny details a film maker implemented not to mention how all the fancy ones are gold plated and made of fancy material that takes a long time to bio degrade but the wooden cup if it wasn't magical it would have disintegrated and become unusable a long time ago

Just realized all the food items that the combine provides in half life Alex is water flavored. Honestly that just makes the line "sometimes I dream about cheese". Just sad honestly. Like all these people have to eat is from I can tell is water flavored crackers. It's quite surprising humans are fighting for freedom instead of killing themselves with how they really ligit don't have any creature comforts at all. Life under the combine really is just soo miserable that anything that has flavor is just a far off dream. You are alone repressed and in constant fear of getting arrested with nothing to comfort you at all.
