@actuallyautistic One thing I’ve always struggled with is being made fun of for not singing during worship, or not being comfortable with public prayer. Knowing that these things are part of my autism, and not only are acceptable but just as honoring to God has improved my self-image tenfold. I would just like to encourage fellow autistic Christians on here that you shouldn’t let ANYONE tell you that your worship isn’t valid. Last time I checked, the haters aren’t God!

@actuallyautistic Another day of being told I’m “British” and “don’t understand U.S. weather” on social media because I don’t enjoy summer time and temps above about 72°F because of sensory issues. Have to school them right back by telling them I’m from the southern U.S. 😂

I was born and raised in the Midlands. But my mother's side is Scottish and my father's Yorkshire. (I know, half Scottish and half Yorkshire. But I'm not tight with money at all... just careful 😅)

chevalier26 OP ,
@chevalier26@mastodon.social avatar

@Aerliss @actuallyautistic Even the winters where I live are sometimes too much for me. Every January and February we will get an odd few days where the high is between 70-80°F 🥴. And even on “typical” winter days the high temp hovers in the 40s.

@actuallyautistic Just found out that NT people have REAL habits that happen basically on autopilot. This is news to me.

What most NT people think of as a "habit" I think of as a "task," even if it is a part of my routine. For example, brushing and flossing my teeth is a part of my daily routine, but I have to make myself think about each action separately. I wouldn't call them habits because I literally remind myself to do them every night. It isn't automatic.

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic Same here, although very occasionally I find I've picked up a useful habit by accident.

In fifty-plus years I've never been able to do it deliberately. Normally they stop just as mysteriously as they start.

@actuallyautistic Wish more YouTubers and content creators added a toggle to their videos that could switch off background music. Idk about y'all, but so many videos have added music that is unnecessary, distracting, and overstimulating.

I have seen videos on YouTube where the closed captions settings have been programmed with a separate audio track with no commentary, so I know it can be done! Would probably be so helpful for so many people!

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic Hear, hear! I bitch about this a fair bit myself, too. I even emailed a complaint to YT two weeks ago, asking for an easy way to make background music optional. I sometimes complain directly to creators, but there's only been one that removed the music after that, and she's autistic. ND creators just ignore me completely, or say they appreciate the feedback but then do nothing about it. Sometimes I wonder if a campaign to leave a lot of feedback on videos would help, but it doesn't seem likely.

@actuallyautistic How did y'all discover which parts of yourself were masking and which parts are genuine? Or, figuring out when you are masking in the moment it happens? Sometimes I feel off in certain scenarios but I can never pinpoint what is masking and what isn't. Any advice or resources would be appreciated!

I really have no idea what my personality is, it may al be masking. I know what I THINK, but I don't have any awareness of some way to "be," that would be my own.

@actuallyautistic Another vent incoming about this faculty training course:

The instructions for everything are SO VAGUE! And on top of that, the tutorials for using the programs in Canvas, like SpeedGrader for grading assignments, don't even match how the programs look on my own laptop. I am, quite literally, floundering. Aye, aye, aye... :blobugh:

chevalier26 OP ,
@chevalier26@mastodon.social avatar

@actuallyautistic I am literally forced to delay my completion of this course because someone in admin didn't think about possible Canvas updates or software changes between when the tutorials were published and when the rest of the applicants would watch them. FWIW, the training videos are all from 2020. Sigh.

@actuallyautistic Do y'all know if it's an autistic trait to be super skeptical of stuff? Like, for example, my parents watch some questionable "health" people on YouTube, and when they show me a video from said people, I can tell IMMEDIATELY that they are grifters in it for money. Idk what gives it away but it's like a flashing warning sign in my brain.

I wonder if it has to do with social influence and the effects of charisma/agreeableness that NDs might not fall for.

miaoue ,
@miaoue@neurodifferent.me avatar

@pathfinder @chevalier26 i agree with you, and i think both tendencies connect to how we are drawn to the factual content of what people say and may not pick up on nonverbal content, including people's perspectives and intentions. i have trusted people who gave plenty of nonverbal indications that they were untrustworthy, but i didn't understand those signals, so i could only process the words they said, which didn't give me the full picture. it's a similar process when i'm not intimidated by someone signaling that they are an authority, but in that case, it works in my favor.

Next time you find yourself exposed to advertising, just say to yourself, "I am not the target audience".

@actuallyautistic Do any of y'all have EXTREME heat intolerance? It's like the older I get the more I can't put up with hot weather. I've always been very "hot-natured," prefer winter over summer, etc. but this year I think my intolerance has been the worst yet. Friends are telling me how it's peak summer weather (90 degrees is comfortable?!?) meanwhile I start sweating when it's 70+ degrees Fahrenheit outside. What gives?

ovro ,
@ovro@mastodon.art avatar

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic Oh yeah. Anything over +25°C and things get very uncomfortable. +28°C and I just start shutting down.

To balance that (as if), I also freeze easily. Just the other night it was +11°C during a nighttime dog walk and some of my fingers turned white.

My heat regulation system is, to put it simply, broken.

@arisummerland @actuallyautistic Great news! My mom found a vent guard so I'm finally able to redirect all the cold air coming through my bedroom vent. I think all the cold air was being trapped under my bed, and that's why my room always felt stuffy, not because the vent was clogged. It's not even been 10 minutes and I already feel a substantial difference in the temperature.

@actuallyautistic Maybe y’all can help me with this question:

Over the past few months I have really been ruminating on what “masculinity” and “femininity” even are, and those terms are mostly defined by stereotypes. Like, I know I’m a woman but I’ve always felt like “just some guy.” I’ve never had dysphoria or anything, and I have a biblical understanding of sexuality, but cultural ideas about gender make no sense to me. All of this is so confusing. Any ideas?

marytzu ,
@marytzu@mastodon.social avatar

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic hard to say.

I think it's one of those things where you don't really feel it unless things are going horribly wrong. Or like only darkness allows you to know what light is. Contrast gives definition.

Eg adopt a male persona in an online space. How does it feel being gendered he him for, say, a week? Good/bad/don't feel anything. Use a mood diary if you're alexithymic.

Zumbador ,
@Zumbador@mefi.social avatar

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic

Recently, there's been more recognition that both cis and trans people experience diffences in "gender valence", that is, how strongly aware we are of a gender identity.

It's a spectrum from no gender valence (agender people) to strong gender valence, where the person knows without a doubt that they are a woman, a man, nonbinary, or whatever their gender identity is.

This spectrum is not corrolated to whether you're cis or trans.

A cis person might have a weak sense of gender identity, but be perfectly willing to accept the gender assigned to them at birth. Or they might be very sure of their gender identity.

The same is true for trans people. We might be unable to say what our gender identity is and just know what we're not. Or we might have a strong sense of what we are.

You get to decide what you are. You might change over time, you might always feel uncertain. No one else can tell you what you "really" are. Move towards what gives you joy.

@actuallyautistic Every now and then I’ll see a video like this on Instagram and just shake my head…like why do “issues” like this have to be made into a gender war? Plenty of women do this same thing, or, at least, by “women” I mean myself 😂. Thought it was logical to leave things out that will be used again…so you don’t have to unnecessarily dirty other dishes. Guess that’s just an alpha male thing /s

@actuallyautistic Does anyone else find that their music taste is extremely unconventional? I can enjoy most types of music with others, but when I'm alone I listen to stuff that most people would never listen to. Like historical folk songs, military marches, courtly dance music, sea shanties, etc.

I enjoy other music too but I feel like the above categories are things I am "ashamed" to play around others. Idk if that makes sense lol.

@actuallyautistic In the process of completing my online faculty training course to be a GSA next year...literally EVERYTHING is so vague and confusing.

Emailed the faculty coordinator about it and he told me that I was so ahead in the course that I was outpacing the course administrators. So basically, I'm working ahead so quickly that IT and my course instructor haven't had a chance to update my course info, so that's why everything is confusing.

I think it's one of those things where it depends on the circumstances. In the right environment questions are not only welcome, but a required part of the process. A good teacher not only wants their pupils to ask if they are confused, but will use these moments as a way of making the process more interactive and productive for all.
In other situations questions are seen as either an unwarranted interruption, or as a sign of personal failure and even possibly an attack on the person's position.
Making it clear beforehand that your questions are necessary and not to be judged as anything other than genuine, may help.

I did a technical training at my work for about 20 years, and I'm currently mentoring a new-hire in my department.
ASK QUESTIONS!
At the beginning of my training sessions I told people to interrupt me and ask - questions are welcome, even encouraged. The mentee I'm telling to go into the labs, watch what they're doing, and ask questions. I told him to ask me questions. That's how you learn. That's how I learned.

@actuallyautistic Earlier today I had a conversation/argument with my mom about the mountain laurel tree that is outside my bathroom window at our cabin, which she insisted was NOT a mountain laurel. I said, if you saw mountain laurel flowers would you recognize them? And she said yes, so I showed her photos of the one next to the house and she affirmed that it was a mountain laurel until I told her it was indeed the tree next to the house 🫠 can’t ever win.
