Some of those curbs may also be kids, but who can tell.

chatokun ,

My desktop is empty because I don't use it. I hide all icons as well so the system ones don't show either. As for my tabs... why don't we talk about something else, and not why I got 64gb of ram so I could open more tabs.

chatokun ,

The funny thing is I'm in IT. The amount of tabs I have open is usually due to solving issues, opening multiple tabs of info to research without losing place. Just I often tend to forget to close some when done, or I get interrupted by either other work, questions (I'm an escalation point so helping my coworkers is also part of my job), or straight up ADHD. I used to keep tabs open to track manga/manhwa I'm interested or reading, but I use an app for that now and close apps way more often now.

I still might get a bunch open when trying to figure out game stuff or making choices for either shopping or D&D/Pathfinder or just something I need to look up, but the manga/manhwa was really the one that kept stuff open for days at a time.

My brother and I (mostly him, just helped a small bit) used to distribute Anime this way. He'd buy laserdiscs of Anime like Rurouni Kenshin (OVA/Prequel)and Yu Yu Hakushou, then download translations for subtitles and time them on the computer, using a bluescreen pass through and onto some SVHS VCRs. From those two SVHS VCRs, he'd use 9 others to copy them onto VHS tapes for distribution via mail. He'd charge cost iirc, not making profit on it.

I'm 100% sure it would be considered piracy if the companies had a way to find out. Plus VHS tapes had piracy warnings on them back then anyway.

I pointed it out to someone in the car with me and my face probably had a smile, as I joked about how pictures don't do it service how ugly/odd it looked in person. Then we switched back to whatever topic we were talking about.

Some people like odd shapes, some people make fun of it, some don't care. There are plenty of things I'd never drive but might like to look at, some in appreciation, some in mockery.

My main issues with Teslas are company and owner issues. Issues with cutting corners, his involvement with manipulating governments for Lithium, and the wild way he hires and fires people due to ego (reportedly fired entire Supercharger group because lead wouldn't do anymore layoffs, and is desperately trying to rehire talent).

I can discuss all that stuff with people without a scowl on my face, because I'm laughing at such dumb decisions. I don't have any personal opinions about you really, other that you either don't know that stuff or don't care. I might make judgements if I confirmed you knew all that and still went for it, or if I knew you simped for him, but I couldn't make that call just seeing one out on the street.

chatokun ,

I don't like em, but not to the level of gross. Pickles are gross for me, olives I can either move to the side or ignore as a mildly worse meal.

You have so much to learn about people who feed into the Satanic panic. Cherry picking is by definition how they get there. One of Alex Jones biggest boggiemen for years was a subsection of a law that allowed medical testing on troops, and he always ignores the very next section that states that it all requires informed consent. Then lies and act like people would have no idea.

During covid he found an exercise that tried to assume 4 different future scenarios that may come into play, and ignored the positive leaning ones or nuetralish ones and went straight for the heavily authoritarian exercise because it used a possible pandemic as a background setting, then claimed it was all planned out and proof Covid was a bioweapon attack.

People like this willfully ignore things that give context, and will often repackage it without the context anytime they can.

chatokun ,

Part of the whole panic and cherry picking thing is also an important next step: refusal to do proper research. A simple web search would correctly show you that it's harmless. One might also find sources that claim it's actually satanic, but they'd find those in blogs, social media, or message boards, while legitimate and official sites would show the correct info.

It's up to the person to determine which one is correct. Most logical people would go with the simplest and least sensational definition being the correct one, while those with a conspiratorial mind view would ignore such common sense and choose to panic.

chatokun ,

Well, we don't really care about a natural emotion reaction in yout head. Once you start spreading it around and claiming something about it, then its a problem. If you just spread it as a "look at this weird thing I found, isn't it funny?" That's also fine. However, if you start spreading it like "can you believe this?" without checking into it, then you're either gullible to the point of the internet being dangerous for you, or you're complicit.

chatokun ,

When you aren't an expert, then you try to find answers by looking it up, as I explained. It isn't hard, and this one in particular is a common joke. On some subjects a simple search won't work as well, I'll grant you that. However you seemed hellbent on defending people jumping to conclusions without som3 due diligence. That's on the person. Misinformation spreads because lazy people want to go off of gut reactions and not even make sure the stuff they spread is true or a misunderstanding.

Why are you so invested in not even trying to fact check? Apologies if that isn't your point, because it sure feels like it.

chatokun ,

Yeah, they probably were. I might be a bit more sensitive because I've seen people ruined by simple stuff like this, and algorithms that encorage going further down the shock, anger, and fear pipeline. I'm pretty adamant that people fact check instead of being shocked, as those moms and aunties might become future Ashli Babbitts. That of course could be just me paying more attention to that side of indoctrination, because I worry what harm it could cause.

Still, I was mostly engaging in an discussion that cherry picked stuff is dangerous even if people don't think it is. Plenty of people have been radicalized starting with jokes and minor misunderstandings that never got corrected. I try to at least steer people towards looking into things even occasionally on joke posts. It may be overreacting, but I remember a time where I was dumb enough to accept "Nice guys finish last" as a somewhat true joke.

My younger sister has (in the past, quite a while ago, but still) gotten me a cease and desist during a visit and torrenting without a VPN, so I wouldn't say no way.

Testicles make more sense because it's easy to acquire, you just butcher the animal. Same with blood. Milk is also produced regularly with a little more work. Semen requires ejaculation AFAIK, which feels both much harder and much weirder to perform.

chatokun ,

Sync and I was already used to it when I abandoned Reddit.

Worse, iceberg lettuce. If the first one is also iceberg, pass.

I've also been to Chicago once (going to an Anime con up there; was a meet up for AMV creators worldwide, and while I wasn't one my brother was), but it was a chill and nice experience for me. The last time I heard gunshots was actually this past new years, when my neighbor fired off like 12-15 shots during fireworks (GA, not in Atlanta but not too far either).

chatokun ,

Read some Stormlight Archive, and know that I am a stick.

chatokun ,

If you want an honest answer, it's just fun for us. Take it as mild ribbing. There are worse things to be remembered for.

chatokun ,

Not really, in my experience, but also during new years my neighbor shot off like 15 shots into the air. I wasn't worried at being shot at, I was worried some drunk idiots stray bullet might come through my window. Also your statements about that was sorta my point. Some of the mildest American jokes are us being fat, then racism/mistreatment of natives, then shootings, then all the shit America has pulled in other countries. UK is bad teeth, royalty, then all the shit they did to other countries. Germany is dry or non existent humor and then Nazi.

Ooh, our animals are scary is mild, sometimes they do island of criminals, but you could be known for mistreatment of Natives also. If you gotta take an L, I think scary animals is way down on the list.

Regulated doesn't mean they control all VPNs, it means they usually have laws requiring any use of VPN to be licensed, and usually is allowed for businesses rather than individuals. They also block via their firewall many providers. Of course, you could always use one illegally as long as traffic isn't blocked. Just don't get caught.

I've never met a vegan in real life who is annoying (about veganism. Maybe about other things...) Most of them it even takes a while to find out they're vegan. Several bosses I only found out because a team lunch. Several others I only found out because I befriended them at work and after months of talking to them it finally came up one way or another. Never even be criticized by them, and likewise, I've never criticized them (in general I have very few issues with veganism. Maybe I disagree with them on honey bees, and not even sure that's all vegans. Oh, and perhaps the belief that one cannot love any animal if they eat meat, but its not a topic i wish to agrue so I dont bother engaging anyway.)

Online you may have someone being more abolitionist or mutant about veganism, but even them it's hardly an issue unless you go into vegan spaces or are commenting about certain things like that dolphin shooting, and even then it's not really mostly on the level of whataboutism and being really extreme and preachy.
