It still happens more than it should. It took me 4 tries to get the nVidia driver to take on my "gaming" laptop with Fedora 40, (it wouldn't accept the public keys for some reason). And I had to wait for some updates that took 2 weeks to show up. But, the onboard Intel chipset ran Nouveau just fine with no waiting and tinkering. I think people are still having some issues with nVidea and Wayland yet. I know I still have some minor ghosting issues with a couple of AppImages I really need to use that would prefer straight X11 over X-Wayland.

Now that didn't bother me because I've been using various distros since buying my first boxed set CDs with RedHat 5 from Walmart of all places for $25US. (I still suffer from PTSD thanks to rpm hell). But I can see how a stumbling block like that can turn newcomers to Linux distros off.

Yep. A traditional forum ages and grows old. And as they get older and older, it becomes harder to draw new members because of the clique of the core membership. I've seen a few traditional forums die that death over the years.

And some forums, and I belong to several, the members are literally dying from old age. We are all mostly old and retired. And we lose members every year due to death. Several times a year there is an obituary post for some long time member.

Pfffttt, Microsoft has been there, done this, and got a whole closet full of tee shirts for stuff like this many times over the years. In the end the users don't care and can't stop it. And they are, by in large, too lazy to change to something else to completely avoid it.

It hasn't ever affected the bottom line enough to matter to them. They will just pull this bug feature and wait for a better day. Or perhaps they will figure out a way to introduce it piecemeal to disguise it better.

Hey, I replace LibreOffice on my Linux installs every time with OnlyOffice. I don't really need a full up office suite anymore. And I find OnlyOffice is a bit simpler and easier to use. But it's not for everybody.

Plus, it keeps me away from trusting Google Docs.......

So does Slack. But while they are 2 of the foundational distros, neither is the first go to choice of the average user. Neither distro caters to the mainstream user. If you are choosing either of those two distros, you are definitely old school and/or are looking for a solution to problem that is perhaps more of an edge case.

It's not so much about lubrication as it is about trying to prevent seal wear. When the wiper seal gets worn and can no longer keep the dust and grit out, the rolling elements have little time left.

If the bearing as lubricated correctly at installation time, it should never need re-lubrication. But it's important to keep the rail surfaces clean. And it's amazing just how dusty those rails can get and just how abrasive that dust is on the bearings.

I don't lube the rails, it attracts too much dust. But I do wiper the rails periodically. I replaced the linear rod bearings and rods on my old and trusty Mk3s+ after almost 3500 hours of operation this last winter. Though I should have probably done it a bit sooner.

While I don't think the way Texas has the regulations setup is a good idea, one has to look more at the 'whole picture' and do the math. Is the low cost periods low enough that when you get 'gouged' by the spikes, what was the total average cost? If the spikes are taken as a average over time, then maybe it works out in the consumer's favor or at worst break even, then it might be worth it. Or maybe it doesn't But I honestly don't know. I don't have the numbers in front of me to do the math, I'm a 1000+ miles away from Texas.

Edit to add: I don't know just how much extra electricity Texas will need to buy, but I would assume they will be buying a noticeable amount. And the cost of electricity is VERY expensive in the spot market. It's why my co-op is doing major upgrades to the hydro-electric dam. To increase the efficiency and reduce the need to buy expensive spot market power.

And without a good way to store the excess power generated, solar and wind aren't very good for peak loads. You can't merely flip a switch and spool up more power than a solar panel or wind generator can produce. Clouds reduce efficiency, insufficient or too much winds shut down wind generators. And despite having more alternative generation than everyone's hero - California, it still not enough to carry the whole load. Consumers are raising demand far faster than enough infrastructure can be built out to supply that demand. So for peak loads, natural gas generators are used because they can be turned on and off quickly as needed. This adds excess cost.

The installation of storage batteries farms is fantastic. But it will take time and it will add cost to consumers electric bill.

And despite some tankie's beliefs, nothing is free - it all costs something. I'm a member of a tiny rural electric co-op. The co-op needs to make a profit to afford maintenance and upgrades to our tiny grid. Our power is generated by a hydro-electric dam and my rates have gone up this year to to cover the costs of some major maintenance on the dam and the addition of 3 new linemen to keep the electricity flowing to my heat pump that the co-op incentivizes and highly encourages.

I have seen 2 different articles that claim WinAmp is NOt going to be open sourced. At least in the common sense. But rather kind - of - sort - of - but - not - really.

For my, VERY limited needs for the tiny bit I have dabbled in programing or even just help with some Linux issues, I've been using Phind. It seems to work a whole lot better than any of the other search engines. But my needs can't really twist the tail like real programmers.

What's your go-to "Bang for your Buck" filament brand?

As I'm graduating college in a few weeks, I'll be losing access to my university's free printers and filament. I'm going to build up a home lab with a couple printers where I can make goofy little mechanical projects as well as some components for my cars and stuff....

For PLA and PETG, I like MatterHacker, though I have been buying some Voxel PLA lately and that's been pretty good stuff too. Voxel does run sales that get the price down to $15/$16US a kilo.

For ABS/ASA, I'm still using a the same kilo of Zyltech ABS I bought 5 or 6 years ago. And I still haven't used 200g yet. I did dig it out this weekend to print a couple dozen custom cable clips for my boat with it though.

I ain't no programmer, but I was a toolmaker and ME that designed machines to be used in factories. I learned to not be surprised at how operators could find new and interesting ways, (sometimes dangerous), run the machines I designed and built. They did things I never would have dreamed possible or meant with them.

This triggers me to my very core.

I need long range and I need it at -30F. A round trip to the grocery store or to see a doctor is 100 miles and can be as much as 300 miles. I can't justify an EV until I can get that kind of range at an affordable price. $40,000US+ ain't really affordable for most people.

I almost bought a Chevy Bolt, but between not being able to actually find one to see and touch, and the almost good enough range, I just didn't feel comfortable with such a large purchase.

Northern Minnesota often sees those temperatures. And if it's a real medical emergency, you could well be dead by the time anyone can get to you - IF you have cell service to make a call. If they do make it to you, you will probably be airlifted by helicopter. Making a a 100+ mile trip, would be just for a clinic visit or even to pick up a prescription, which I did last Saturday for my Wife.

I'm in northern Minnesota. There is a fairly large low population area across the north central and northwestern part of that state. Not many people live here. And yes, the use case is pretty niche compared to anyone living in a more urban area. But while there aren't many of us up here, we do exist.

Financial constraints are the biggest issue with the adoption of EVs for most people. It is still cheaper for many to own an ICE than invest in an EV. The pay back is painfully slow. Still, if it hadn't been for the battery problems of the Bolt, I probably would have bought one. It would have been just doable for my needs as a second vehicle.

I have looked into hybrids also. The problem there is since I live in a very rural area, the long distances I travel means I drive at highway speeds for almost all of the trip. The ICE motor would run the whole trip anyway. Paying for a battery that is seldom used and dragging the extra weight around makes no sense.And it would be difficult to something repaired if it needed it.

Hi! Neighbor! I am a lot closer to Winnipeg than the Twin Cities.

There are government programs to install chargers here also. The problem is, there is no money to fix those chargers when they stop working. My Daughter, who is a research engineer in the fields of public charging for EVs and HVAC systems, will tell you that she can get all kinds of money to install them, but there is no money to actually keep them working. And it's expensive to repair them. So it's nearly useless at this point in time to install them only to have them break and not get repaired. She is currently doing a 10 year study of a string of 60 chargers across the northern part of the state from Red Lake to Brainard to the Twin Cities.

I haven't been to Winnipeg in a long time, since before COVID. But I do get to Fort Francis when I go to the 'Falls. I miss the days when we could just pass the border without the hassle it's become today. I used to have family up in Roseau years ago. Might still be some shirttail outlaws up there.

My Daughter works for a non-profit too. She does research on not only public charging for vehicles, but also HVAC systems for homes across the US. I have also had to swim in the ocean of paperwork of state and federal grants. Few survive the experience for long. May God 'ha mercy on your soul!
