For anyone with dyscalculia: What’s so special about numbers? How does your brain make special exception for numbers and not have general dyslexia? How are digital clocks with numbers easier to understand than analog clocks with a spatial representation of time? (It’s the conversion to numbers, isn’t it, not a spatial comprehension of time per se)

@Holobrine @actuallyautistic thank you for the interesting thought of the evening and my new special interest for the next 2 hours 😂

Autistic folk often have a lot of other stuff they are dealing with. You can think of it as “Autism and…” because that is the reality for most of us.

Here is a list of “some” of the more common ones.

    Any tips for making lots of small tasks easier for a monotrophic mind? Much of my work consists of long term projects which need a little bit of attention periodically, often in the form of follow-up emails. I currently alternate between replying to what's come in and reviewing my calendar to check what's coming up, but there's very little job satisfaction. Turning off email notifications and dealing with them all at once isn't enough. What else could I try? @actuallyautistic

    @Autisticaurochs @actuallyautistic I find putting projects onto a gantt chart/project management software an effective way as the visual indicator is like a game in my mind. You have to be a little creative with the details to ensure everything you do decreases the time left to the goal (like a game would). Thus building in mundane follow-ups etc into the original project plan is necessary because you don't want it going backwards half way though otherwise my brain decides it's not interested any more. In fact building in quite a few more than I actually need helps because you can mark them done when you're not feeling motivated for a quick boost.

    Wondering whether some older undiagnosed autistics might’ve been mis-diagnosed with dementia due to poorer executive function as they age & cope less well with stress. @actuallyautistic

    @Tooden @Susan60 @actuallyautistic Can confirm! There are a scary number of medical myths that drive modern practice that have long since been debunked by science yet they fail to be included in medical textbooks and/or post graduate training. Additionally there are too many medical 'professionals' that feel entitled to not seek their own education and will only undertake it if it is provided, meaning the myths are pushed by sources that use them for their own benefit.

    "It might not feel like it's an active step toward self-acceptance or authenticity, but coming to understand yourself as disabled is a pretty dramatic reframing of your life."

    • Devon Price in Unmasking Autism

    This sentence hits me hard. Haven't thought it using that wording. My internalized ableism screams. "I'm not disabled!" But I am. I need to digest this.

    @faithisleaping @LehtoriTuomo @actuallyautistic the word "disabled" irks me in this context. People aren't dis-abled", they're prevented from being abled by a society that doesn't allow them to be different. The descriptor for people who are currently referred to as "disabled" needs to change to reflect that.

    The deficit model of autism in DSM-5 dehumanizes us by focusing on external traits rather than internal experiences. It's also based in Nazi race science.

    How can we push for more relevant diagnostic criteria?

    Do we even need it?

    @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I'd rather everyone just accept that all people have their differences, and all deserve to be accommodated.

    @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd I know this isn't specifically an autistic/ADHD trait, but I have a lot of trouble remembering people's names. Usually I have to write down the name, take a picture of it, or make an association that sticks. Does this happen to any of you too?

    bananamangodog ,
    @bananamangodog@aus.social avatar

    @catswhocode @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd I never forget a face but like you I can't remember names. I've put it down to names for the most part no longer having meaning, like "catswhocode" I would remember far easier than "Jane" or "John" for example.
