@actuallyautistic My autism doesn't make me disabled, SOCIETY makes me disabled.

Not claiming I know @MuppetRat's thoughts, but I believe the message here is just that being disabled wouldn't be a thing if we weren't in a capitalist society.

When your value as a person is not tied to whether you can produce marketable goods or services, the concept of abled/disabled loses its meaning.

I'm blunt, discourteous and antagonistic, and will definitely not work in a team environment... but it's not my fault, my coworkers are slow to catch on!

I'm visiting family, and wow am I deep in autistic denial territory.

Some of my younger relatives have approached me, asking about neurodivergence because I've been so open about my experience as a late realised autistic person. They're wondering about themselves and their parents.

The older people though, are unable to have that conversation. There are jokey, sidelong half acknowledgements that "there might be something going on" with them, but otherwise it's High Masking At All Times.

What I find difficult to deal with is the rather toxic judgemental attitudes.

So-and-so relative is "so picky about his food, he thinks it makes him important" or "how ridiculous, he doesn't like the too bright light in the bathroom" and all the while I can see them struggling to deal with the exact same difficulties they're judging in others.

It's so ingrained, I don't know if there's a way for them to find self acceptance.

I so totally agree with the sentiment!

I don't just take another path to arrive at the same place as everyone! I take another path that lands me in another place, and often quite alone in my perspective.

@JoBlakely

There have been some people touching upon those things lately.

For example, the fact that the foundation of our identity seems to come from who we are rather than being tied to our relationship to others.

But I agree, there is still a lot more about how we appear than how (or why) we are.

Very sorry to come to you with a request, having being here only for a short time, but I am in dire need of advice.

My 16yo son is autistic. He always had perfect grades and school was always easy for him. But this year, he's reached his limits. He cannot motivate himself any longer. School is boring and pointless. He likes Maths, Sciences and Music a lot, but nothing else.

I fear he'll drop out if his case worsens... and I know first-hand the guilt dropping out inflicts...
