@actuallyautistic Do any of y'all have EXTREME heat intolerance? It's like the older I get the more I can't put up with hot weather. I've always been very "hot-natured," prefer winter over summer, etc. but this year I think my intolerance has been the worst yet. Friends are telling me how it's peak summer weather (90 degrees is comfortable?!?) meanwhile I start sweating when it's 70+ degrees Fahrenheit outside. What gives?

arisummerland ,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic 100%. Anything above 75°F and I almost pass out. I'm working on increasing my heat tolerance this year, but it is difficult. It's already 88°F (31°C ) here this afternoon. I just did a brief trek two doors down to drop something off for my neighbor and had to come back in and lay down in a cool room to recover. I don't like summer at all.

@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic I moved my bed to the coolest bedroom in the house this year and It is so much nicer. I have a fan going constantly in that room and it's about 2°F cooler than the rest of the house. )It's just above the HVAC blower in the basement.)

I detest sweating. The worst part is, with the life transition I've been going through the past five years, my face is always the first thing to sweat, and I wear glasses. Absolute nightmare!

@punishmenthurts @chevalier26 @actuallyautistic I thought about investing in an ice vest. My friends who have MS swear by them. But I didn't think about extra fat being a problem. Makes sense!

@punishmenthurts @chevalier26 @actuallyautistic Yep, just for living and coping with heat.

@actuallyautistic Does anyone else find that their music taste is extremely unconventional? I can enjoy most types of music with others, but when I'm alone I listen to stuff that most people would never listen to. Like historical folk songs, military marches, courtly dance music, sea shanties, etc.

I enjoy other music too but I feel like the above categories are things I am "ashamed" to play around others. Idk if that makes sense lol.

arisummerland ,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic I love all sorts of music and am a musician, but I don't have a favorite song or a favorite band, and I listen to all sorts of things -- but only on my terms! One day it could be Motörhead and the next day it could be Tchaikovsky. And yes, I will autistically ask my smart speaker to play a song that makes me happy over and over again until I am satisfied.

how do my autistic comrades combat loneliness?

@actuallyautistic

arisummerland ,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic The pandemic has stripped away any "need" to be around other people. I find socializing an inconvenience and an energy drain. I spend tons of time alone, with my animals, thoughts, books, text friends, classes, Mastodon, etc. and I love it. I work with people one-on-one and help them feel better. That, along with my few good ND friends, is enough people-ing for me. Dogs help a lot! You're never lonely with a pet.

Wondering whether some older undiagnosed autistics might’ve been mis-diagnosed with dementia due to poorer executive function as they age & cope less well with stress. @actuallyautistic

Just was ‘diagnosed’ with anxiety today after talking to a psychiatrist for five minutes (I’m using quotes because it seems a bit too preliminary to me to diagnose whoever with whatever after about 5 minutes of general talk).
Came asking for and evaluation. Was totally ignored on that regard) Of course, didn’t have courage to ask again.

Was it so obvious? Was I just a walking stereotype: middle-aged woman from a war-thorn country living alone who voluntarily came to a psychiatrist(doesn’t matter what else she has, she can’t NOT be anxious)?
Or is it just a general experience of most of female-passing folks: to be seen as anxious, to have most of their symptoms attributed to (not like I was asked about any symptoms, but maybe have demonstrated some?)?

Anyone else finding Mastodon very slow to load sometimes? Do you know what causes it?

I’m using the ‘Ice Cubes’ iOS app, not sure if it’s that.

Or could it be the instance I’m on? Could that would make any difference?

My internet is pretty fast: 840 Mbps download / 100 Mbps upload (tested this just now via the same device I’m having issues with Mastodon on).

@AnAutieAtUni @actuallyautistic I use IceCubes on iOS as well (for 3 different accounts) and find my feed often lags and doesn't load images at peak use times. I haven't used other Mastodon apps as much, so can't speak to whether it's the app, my internet connection, or on the server side.

@actuallyautistic

I think the evidence is mounting that in some circumstances I can be rather slow to process emotions.

Sometimes it is not until the day after something happened that I get angry. During this "something" I keep a placid demeanor. This demeanor is not a strategy or a conscious decision.

Then, the next day, I realize how this very thing gives rise to emotions, often anger.

I'm wondering if it relates to alexithymia. I'm not confused about what I feel, but the feeling may get delayed.

Or maybe it is a combination of:

  • people pleasing,
  • autistic inertia,
  • alexithymia

Just thinking out lout about one of my characteristics here.

arisummerland ,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@yourautisticlife @actuallyautistic Same. I can be so calm and rational when the thing (whatever it is) is happening only to realize later how angry it really made me. Sadness, though, doesn't seem to go that way for me. Only anger. So for me, I think it's tied up with the freeze/fawn response that I can't seem to kick. Also socialization -- not "nice" to be angry. Sad is seen as "weak", so that's okay. It's complicated and messy and not fun!

You know when you start a big tidying project, with great intentions, and then get overwhelmed by the mess you create?

Yeah.

That.

Doctor suggested I have but I don't think I do because:
I am able to force myself to do things even if I'm not interested in it.
I do not like spontaneity.
When I have a deadline, I cannot leave it to the last minute or anxiety would cripple me.
But I do struggle to pay attention unless am hyperfocused. And I do have executive function challenges. And I have to have a project. And I crave dopamine hits.

Anyone else similar to that?

@actuallyadhd

arisummerland ,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@niamhgarvey @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd Very similar. I wonder if I have a combination, but I don't have most of the classic symptoms of ADHD, so 🤷🏽

This morning I was going off to do a newer activity for which I had made a partial list, and got most things I needed into the car, but I ended up going back into the house three times because I didn't actually write everything on the list that I needed -- because new activity! Sigh.
