I'd spend way more time worrying about if I actually wanted to be married to a dude named Addison.

ZagamTheVile ,

I quit smoking pot and no longer enjoy the Spin Doctors.
Well, that's half true. I heard them straight one day and decided if that's the kind of thing I like when I'm high, I should quit.

ZagamTheVile ,

Day Z with a friend till I hate everything about every thing.
And therapy twice a month.

ZagamTheVile ,

I admit I didn't read the article throughly, but surely if it's impossiblely thin it can't exist. I only bring this up because I'm an obnoxious pedant.

ZagamTheVile ,

Everyone on Rick and Morty.

ZagamTheVile ,

I grew up watching cartoons, and still do.
I'm an avid scifi, horror, and speculative fiction reader/watcher.
There absolutely should be animations geared toward adults.

I don't like Rick and Morty. I think it's dumb, self obsessed, drivel. I think it's writing style is the literary equivalent of pumpkin spice latte. No one hurt me, I just don't like it and I don't understand why people do. I answered a question. I didn't tell people to not watch it.

ZagamTheVile ,

I find they're neither.

It's been more books recently.

We just did Snowcrash, which has parts that aged poorly, but over all was a fun read. That leads to the old movie Pontypool (Snowcrash is in a shot in that that's an obvious plant- both had similar themes). That lead to Pontypool Changes Everything a book that, try as I did, I could not get through. But the movie and BBC radio drama are both great.

We're doing Ubik by Philip K Dick right now, and I'm enjoying that a lot. I've read a fair bit of his stuff but missed this one. I tend to binge authors so I imagine I'll do a few more from him.

Late last year I did about everything from Scott Meyers. The Magic 2.0 books are deff for a younger audience but were fun in their own way.

I tried to do the Murderbot series recently, but it missed it's mark with me. I didn't not like them and I can see goung back to give them a second try maybe in the fall.

The Duck and Cover series was heavily thrown at me through ads so I gave that a go. It deff has its moments but I think there's underlying difference of opinion between me and the author. I have no proof of this, it's just kind of a feeling. Not bad books, funny and clever in spots.

John Scalzi and Dennis E. Taylor are two guys I get everything from as soon as something new drops.

And recently a buddy got me to watch Ravenous. An old cannibalistic, period piece in the Spanish American War era with a good dose of homoeroticisim thrown in. Deff highly recommend watching that.

All the quotes make these chucklefucks sound like 4th graders. "And the he did this and then he said this and then he said that and then I seen him do that and then he done this.. "

That I had a wallet with exact change every time I opened it.
Dinner? My treat, you tip.
You need groceries? Give me the list.
The lady in front of me at the dentist that can't get more care till her bill is paid? Is cash OK?

ZagamTheVile ,

Or just travel around and pay off school lunch debts, overdue book fees at local libraries, and get a round for everyone at every ice cream truck I see.

ZagamTheVile ,

I'm not sure how exactly that improves the world but OK. I'll edit my comment. And from now on I'll be more careful about that. Not just this time, but everytime.

ZagamTheVile ,

We do renovations and build new homes. I'm a superintendent/project manager/babysitter.
I love making people's homes exactly the way they want them to be. Making custom one off shit for a single family that no one else has is absolutely the best. I love the idea thatbim making a house into a home.

The worst part is the fucking clients. Bunch of rich 'have to have it now' spoiled brat, lama people.

I've been doing this for about 35 years and still have zero way to reconcile these two things.

ZagamTheVile ,

Pffft. Fury Road was the best movie in a decade, let alone in the MM franchise.
I'm going Friday to see Furiosa. I hope it's half as good.

ZagamTheVile ,

K. Should I care as much as he does about others? Because I think you'll find it's the same amount.

No spoilers please, but does Old Man’s War get better?

I’ve been really enjoying John Scalzi’s catalog- Started with Starter Villain (delightful!), The Kaiju Preservation Society (Sweet..), Lock In + Head On (fun who-done-its), The Android’s Dream (clever, enjoyable read), Agent to the Stars (funny, creative, pretty good)....

ZagamTheVile ,

Fuzzy Nation is fun too. Do Little Fuzzy right after.
OMW isn't the same kind of series. It's not meant to be as funny. Just basic sci-fi. I enjoyed it though.

ZagamTheVile ,

Also, if you haven't yet, check out the Bobiverse books by D. E. Taylor. If you dug Scalzi's "fun" books, they'll probably be right up your alley.

ZagamTheVile ,

If you think about it, let me know what you thought of Bob.

ZagamTheVile ,

I have those same clubs.
Why isn't there a Frankensteins Monster head there? It would make a sick planter too.

what's a good way to stick a laser leveler to the wall?

I have a laser level that I'd like to use for lining up pictures on my wall. I'm doing this by myself otherwise I just have someone else hold it. It has a couple holes in it that look like maybe you could use screws or nails and I'd rather not have to put holes in the wall to do this. Any suggestions?

ZagamTheVile ,

The tripod idea is a good one. I'd suggest just stacking a bunch of stuff up on a table or chair.
Or, if you have a tape measure, mark a control line around the perimeter with painters tape and measure up from there.

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don't come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don't really get upset by it...

ZagamTheVile ,

Yeah. I try not to mention it to people if I can avoid it. I work construction and am surrounded by manly men tring to out man each other. I had one guy offer me bear jerkey and got bent out of shape when I declined. He wouldn't stop. He just kept on me about why I didn't eat meat. After about an hour of him asking again and again why I don't eat meat I said "meat's another word for dick and eating dick is gay". As problematic as it was, it worked.

It never cases to amaze me that a 250pound dude with a 40oz soda in one hand and a mouthfull of gas station pizza thinks he has the responsibility to lecture me about nutrition.

ZagamTheVile ,

Probably not but I like to think it's created a feedback loop going on in his head endlessly. "Meat is manly. Meat is dick.'"

How do you feel confident in the workplace?

I was a student for many years (5 years of undergrad, 2.5 years of grad school), and I became very comfortable with always being able to look at the syllabus and my grade and know what I needed to do and how well I was performing. Work isn’t like that. Like I think is normal, I get a performance review once a year. I find this...

ZagamTheVile ,

I've been a carpenter since I was 18 and a finish carpenter since i was 30. I'll be 52 this year. So I've been doing this for 34 years. By all regards, I'm an expert in my field. My work has been on magazine covers, my work has won awards for architects and designers. I'm known by name by top builders and firms in my area. I now run jobs as a superintendent and/or project manager. I get calls to come work for other companies on the regular.

I still have zero idea why. Like, I just tell people what to do in an order that makes sense. And before that, I beat nails into wood. It wasn't till about 3 or 4 years ago when my wife took me aside and explained to my face that, yeah, I'm really good at my job that I started to realize that, yeah, I'm pretty good at my job. But everyday, driving in, I'm still just a kid that's in over his head. I don't feel confident at work. I know on one level I'm doing OK, I mean I must be, right? But I just come in and do my best and hope it's good enough. Turns out, that it usualy is good enough.

And I can tell you this. Anyone that walks around super confident in their work, usually sucks at their job. I've seen dozens of people claim that they're the best around, only to get axed or laid off as soon as possible. Don't bother being confident in your work, be confident that you're doing the best that you can do and be confident that you have the ability to keep learning.

My wife did me a favor and soaked all my pla cookie cutters in super hot water to get them clean.
