Honestly they don't have to lower the price. If they just opened up the software I would make the jump.

Sony already does this and doesn't do the stupid camera drm anymore now.

Welp_im_damned OP ,

You have been able to buy Sony phones unlocked and able to get the bootloader. But with the IV/V Sony lock it because of Verizon. https://lemdro.id/pictrs/image/a1b7d946-2f4f-4002-a396-62e9efd6bb5d.png

There are ways to bypass it on xda.

Sony will do the bare minimum that they are forced to. So 5 years due to the EU. Repairability idk about that. Parts are hard to source outside of Asia for Xperia phones.

I hope they improve the amp for the jack at least.

  • The naming is dreadful. What comes after the Xperia 1? Why the Xperia 1 II of course! I swear only their console division is capable of clear and sensible naming.

Their phone division is run by their camera division and unfortunately the naming makes sense in that situation

  • They've fallen seriously behind in software support. This will be mitigated by EU legislation forcing longer support, but it'll still be behind Samsung/Google.

I think only Samsung and Google are doing 7 years of updates. Plus fun fact Sony releases Asop builds of newer versions of android 3 years after eol. But for some reason they won't extend updates for their gms roms https://lemdro.id/pictrs/image/fb737914-22cf-4dfc-b367-9fa2258ac4ab.png

They removed the drm on phone released after 2019 with the start of the current Xperia 1/5/10 lineup.

Welp_im_damned OP ,

Overall this seems like a great qol improvement. A better display, better software support and an overhauled camera experience.

I just hope Sony doesn't fuck it up.

Yes

Welp_im_damned OP ,

Yes. But the American model is locked because of fucking Verizon

Welp_im_damned OP ,

I mean Sony uses an even more stock version of android that Google doesn't even use.

Welp_im_damned OP ,

Yes they usually have an American model for sale

Welp_im_damned OP ,

Supposedly 5 years due to the eu

Welp_im_damned OP ,

There was the Sony Xperia 5 series which is smaller than the 1

Welp_im_damned OP ,

I think so except for certain Uwb radios if I remember correctly.

Welp_im_damned OP ,

Yes if you get the global one since the ones that are the Japanese carrier/us model

Welp_im_damned ,

Rcs isn't a open source but an open standard. Two very different things.

Open standard: anyone can use the standard but could be proprietary/closed source

Open source: anyone can edit/review the code and forket it if they want to.

The issue with RCS currently is that Google won't release the API for it on android and only allows Samsung to use it for their app. Another part is that their encryption is based on signal and released a white paper about it.

Now it's understandable why people would distrust Google. But apple is currently trying to add e2ee to the open standard (google also tried in the past but failed).

Mind you the only reason apple is even implementing RCS is because China is forcing them to. Since any new 5g devices must support rcs to be certified in china.

I hope this helps. Also have a android turtle from the blob!
