What are you talking about? Blocking works just fine. Both on Lemmy and Twitter.

Thorny_Insight ,

"Go die for using the social media platform I don't like" doesn't seem unreasonable at all.

Thorny_Insight ,

This is how I think about social media in general. It's a spectrum from mostly fake to all fake. Even the least fake profiles still only show the good parts of their life and unedited photos are still hand-picked from a bunch of other ones they don't want people to see.

Hell even my own Pixelfed feed which is 100% landscape photography is all more or less fake. I take hundreds of photos and only publish one or two of the best ones and even those are heavily edited. It gives a totally false impression of how good of an photographer I really am.

Thorny_Insight ,

If it's someone I'm never going to meet either way then it doesn't matter if they're real or not. What matters is the quality of content.

Should I avoid or engage in current news right now?

During the last 'election summer' things went haywire but ultimately nothing meaningful really happened, and not a whole lot really changed as a result of that unrest. This time things are going haywire again, and it seems like something big will happen but people thought that the last time... Would it just be better to ignore...

Thorny_Insight ,

My thinking here is that I don't need to pay attention to the news. When something happens that I should know of it'll find its way into my awareness one way or another. I don't need to go looking for it. If by ignoring the news I manage to avoid hearing about something entirely then it wasn't important to begin with.

Personally I only go to one news site few times a day and I just scroll past most of it. On social media I block almost all of it, especially relating to politics. I'm still able to discuss current events with people and the topics that I cant, for example what some individual politican has said or did I'm not interested to discuss anyway.

Applying caulking or silicone.

Thorny_Insight ,

With silicone the proper way is to first wipe the surfaces clean with acetone. Then apply a thick bead of silicone making sure it sticks to both surfaces with no gaps (very important), doesn't need to look pretty. After that you spray it with soapy water which prevents it from sticking where you don't want it to and then use a wet/soapy popsicle stick (or a dedicated tool) to scrape off the excess. After that you can spray it again and super gently pull your finger over it to smooth it out. Should come out looking something like this.

I've gotten good results doing caulking like this aswell but some people say that acrylic caulk may react with the water/soap and you should instead use a dedicated tooling agent.

Thorny_Insight , (edited )

I just counted it yesterday. 500 communities (for a large part porn, anime and foreign ones) and 550 users.

Still waiting for someone to come up with uBlock filter to also block threads linking to specific websites.

Thorny_Insight , (edited )

Running out of content to browse is not a bad thing in my view. Then I just go do something else.

Even on my subscribed feed about 5th of the threads are caught by my daily growing list of content filters. I lose nothing of a value by filtering out the noise from the signal. Still waiting for someone to come up with uBlock filter to block threads linking to specific websites.

Thorny_Insight ,

Glad I'm not the only one ruthlessly blocking people for petty reasons. I deliberately go into controversial threads just to find the "fuck X", ACAB, eat the rich etc. comments only to block the users. If that's your style of commenting then I'm not interested in what else you've got to say. I don't mind disagreement. I'm simply just not interested in seeing that kind of low effort shitposting on my feed.

Thorny_Insight ,

Yeah many apps have features natively that I need to come up with workarounds for. I personally just don't want to use an app for something I can also do in browser. The less apps I have on my phone the better.

Thorny_Insight ,

It also made it so much easier to choose a new device. Requirements: headphone jack and a removable battery. Results: 1

Even Fairphone made themselves irrelevant to me by dropping the headphone jack. What an absolutely stupid decision to make especially for a device like that.

Thorny_Insight ,

Yeah. XCover 6Pro is the only device that met my requirements and is the one I went with.

Thorny_Insight ,

I believe in voting with your wallet. Giving money to companies that practice anti-consumer behaviour sends them the signal that you're okay with what they're doing. I'm not okay with it so I'm sticking to my principles.

I never bought a device with non-removable battery either and now thanks to EU it seems that I don't ever need to either.

I also bought an older model MacBook because it had a better keyboard aswell as HDMI port and SD-card reader. Now the newest models have them again because enough people like me refused to buy the inferior models.

My friend's boyfriend's therapist said that he is an abuser who is trying to look like the victim. What does this mean?

My friend has been talking with this 24 year old man online since early 2022. She is into stereotypical nerds that are on the chubbier sides. He is a stereotypical nerd both inside and out, and is 350 lbs at 5"11. She thinks he's the cutest man she's ever seen. She met him on Reddit, he lives in California while she lives in...

Thorny_Insight ,

I don't see any major red flags there personally. To me he sounds like a tired and depressed man whose probably trying to avoid getting his hopes up so he doesn't get hurt again. He's probably not going to move to England and think she's likely not going to move to the US either so why bother. This relationship has an end date anyway.

Thorny_Insight ,

I believe that by US standards I'm a so called "classical liberal" but by Lemmy standards I'm probably somewhere in the centre right.

And no I'm not that on purpose just like the "ultra-wokes" aren't either. We don't choose our beliefs. They are what they are. We hold the beliefs we think are correct. Now if someone makes an incredibly good argument that shakes your world view, you don't choose to change your mind either - you helplessly do so.

Thorny_Insight ,

We've got salty liquorice chocolate and ice cream aswell. They're both amazing.

Thorny_Insight ,

I've yet to discover the amount needed for me not be able to eat them all in one standing.

Looking for a 4 wheeled pedal vehicle (quadricycle?) ( parbikes.com )

I would like to find a vehicle that is pedal powered (with the possibility of electric assist) that my wife and I can ride and transport our 3 dogs (all are over 70lbs) around town. We live in a small rural town and take our dogs to just outside town every morning and walk with them. One of the dogs has hip dysplasia, and is...

Thorny_Insight ,

Judging by the clouds of steam pouring out of the cracked windows I'd presume so. Either that or they have a fire in there.

Thorny_Insight ,

It's the name of the bridge, not the tower

EDIT: nvm, I apparently made that up. Please proceed.

Thorny_Insight ,

There's no purpose. Life is a sandbox video game. I play it how I want.

If you take care of your parents or other elderly, how are you preparing to age gracefully?

Experiencing firsthand how difficult an aging alcoholic, quadriplegic, post stroke, narcissistic, demented or simply ‘nothing’s wrong with me, I can drive, I don’t need those meds, I don’t need to go to a nursing facility’ kinda parent surely gives you some insight on what to do, what not to do and how to prepare for...

Thorny_Insight ,

I don't basically drink any alcohol and I'm relatively active and fit and I plan to stay that way. There's not much I can do on the mental side of things but the physical side is almost entirely in my control. What motivates me is looking at the average 60 year old male and thinking to myself that I don't ever want to be like them.

What are these "bass" and "treble" that I see in an equalizer ?

I am not an audio person, so do not have much idea about technical terms - but I hear the words "bass" and "treble" almost everywhere now, especially in the equalizer app that came with  a new bluetooth earbuds that I bought (yes, I am still very much a wired-earbud guy, just dipping my toes in the wireless earbud ocean)....

Thorny_Insight ,

Bass for more boom boom boom and treble for more tss tss tss

Thorny_Insight OP ,

I bought it for winter riding but it turned out to be too much fun so now my trusty hard tail spends most of it's days in the shed hoping for a snapped derailleur or something.

Thorny_Insight OP ,

Yes and no. The plushy tires roll really smoothly over rocks and roots but suspension fork absolutely gives you a significantly smoother ride overall. Ofcourse a suspension fat-tire fork would give you the best of both worlds.

However my riding style has always been more towards the slow and technical side so the lack of suspension isn't really an issue. Also one less part to maintain. I might still upgrade the fork at some point but dropper post first.

Thorny_Insight ,

Not using the default ones is a probable cause for why your browser gets flagged. Restore to default settings and make sure you don't have other adblockers enabled (such as the one built into YouTube Enhancer add-on) If you still get the pop-up you can update the "quick fixes" list or wait an hour or so for the uBlock team to catch up with Google's latest updates to the detection script.

Thorny_Insight ,

Met my first girlfriend on a forum that's name in english would be masturbation.org, she contacted me. The second one I met on my country's equivalance of Omegle. The current one I found on Instagram.

Turns out that if you put even a little effort into your first message and for the very least make sure the grammar is on point and save the dickpic for later, she may actually reply back. The bar isn't very high if you want to stand out. Seeing the kind of messages she gets almost daily really shows how pathetically low effort they are. It's clear as day that you're just one of the 50 girls he messaged today.

The fault in our stars

What an absolutely awful movie. I was prepaired to shed a tear but I wasn't expecting it to ruin my entire week. I wish I had never seen it.

First-time home buyers: how did you feel about getting a mortgage?

An option for me to buy a house has come up very suddenly and it seemed like a good idea at first - but I look at a mortgage and think "that's 15 years I'll spend paying back, at absolute minimum. Probably more like 25 years" - how can I possibly plan that far in advance?...

Thorny_Insight ,

It was a no-brainer for me. I've got to live somewhere in either case so instead of paying rent I could just aswell use that money to pay off my mortage (in reality I'm paying less).

In general my attitude towards loans is that if you can't pay cash then you can't afford it but house is obviously an exception as no one has that kind of money saved up.

Haven't regreted a day.

Thorny_Insight ,

It's the same as with Trump. The only reason you keep seeing these articles is because of the haters who can't stop talking about them. It's recreational outrage, pure and simple. There's zero "fanboys" posting articles about Elon or Tesla here. All of it is coming from the people that have the obsession to constantly feed their chronic anger by reading articles that piss them off.

Thorny_Insight ,

I genuinely struggle to see what the benefit of it is. In what way does it further the cause to spread these slander articles especially on a platform like Lemmy? Not a single fanboy is going to change their mind because of it and the rest of them (the vast, vast majority) already despises them to the fullest. It's just a circle jerk at this point. Talking shit about Elon here is just a foolproof way to get upvotes and pats on the back.

Personally I have content filters for Elon, Musk, X, Twitter etc. but I still see atleast 3 new articles here each day. I can only imagine what the actual number is. This just seems like masochism from my point of view. I don't spend any time following what the people I don't like are up to and I can't seem to figure out why anyone would want to do otherwise.

Thorny_Insight ,

My vehicle's AC compressor, water pump and power steering are all belt-driven and I have no complaints.

In all seriousness though - eFatbike with a Pinion gearbox and belt-drive would be the dream.

Thorny_Insight ,

Once the disaster has happened it's already too late.

I have way over a month worth of food and water saved up so I'm good. I was already unprepaired when covid hit. Now I'm a little less unprepaired but I'm still not serious enough about prepping that I would be 100% comfortable had I actually need to rely on my stockpiles.

Thorny_Insight ,

My grandmom used to hang dead birds in her garden to warn others from coming to eat her berries. Maybe this works with kids too, you just need to get a dead one from somewhere first.

Thorny_Insight ,

Might want to check your facts there. FSD works anywhere in the US, both cities and highways. Even on unmapped roads and parking lots.

"Fuck this guy for bringing facts into our circlejerk" - The downvoters, probably

Thorny_Insight ,

works anywhere in the US

The system Mercedes is using is extremely limited and hardly compareable to FSD in any way.

Drivers can activate Mercedes’s technology, called Drive Pilot, when certain conditions are met, including in heavy traffic jams, during the daytime, on spec ific California and Nevada freeways, and when the car is traveling less than 40 mph. Drivers can focus on other activities until the vehicle alerts them to resume control. The technology does not work on roads that haven’t been pre-approved by Mercedes, including on freeways in other states.

Thorny_Insight ,

I don't use TikTok or Instagram and I block shorts on YouTube. The average lenght of the videos I watch is somewhere between 10 to 20 minutes.

Thorny_Insight ,

Right there with you; I despise the app but am against banning it.

Thorny_Insight ,

You need an addon for that. YouTube lets you block shorts for 30 days at a time.

Thorny_Insight ,

Well to be fair this only affects users that are not blocking ads in the first place.

Thorny_Insight ,

Adblockers work just like they always have. Nothing has changed. Mobile apps are a different story but you couldn't ever block ads in the native app anyway.

Thorny_Insight ,

He has a drawer full on broken/damaged phones he showed in one video

Thorny_Insight OP ,

It doesn't even seem to be about money. In the latest case I was going to charge 3hrs + supplies for refurbishing a table that I spent closer to 6 hours working on. They were perfectly willing to pay the amount I was asking for but for some reason they just seem to hate the idea of receiving a bill in the mail instead of me accepting the money right there and then.

Thorny_Insight OP ,

Declining my services from them isn't exactly making them happy either
