The same cheap dark roast from LIDL that I always drink

Thorny_Insight ,

What's minor in this case? The fact that it's not specified makes me think we're speaking of a 17 year old.

Thorny_Insight ,

Come to Finland. I have absolutely zero clue about what party my neighbours vote. Hell, I don't even know who my friends of parents vote.

Thorny_Insight ,

I wore baggy jeans and oversized hoodies in the early 2000's. That's pretty much the last time I "followed a trend" that I can think of though there probably are other occasions too that just don't come to mind now. Most of the time I get into things either before they were cool or way after the wave has already passed.

Am I the only one preferring low quality media over high quality one?

I have a very slow Internet connection (5 Mbps down, and even less for upload). Given that, I always download movies at 720p, since they have low file size, which means I can download them more quickly. Also, I don't notice much of a difference between 1080p and 720p. As for 4K, because I don't have a screen that can display 4K,...

Thorny_Insight ,

I prefer 1080p but if not available then 720p is perfectly fine as well. 4k is overkill and I don't even have a monitor that could play it at native resolution. Where I do prefer "lower quality" though is framerate. I don't like how 60fps looks so I force YouTube to play videos at 24fps.

Too much time in an echo chamber with a hint of anti-semitism

TIL about Roko's Basilisk, a thought experiment considered by some to be an "information hazard" - a concept or idea that can cause you harm by you simply knowing/understanding it ( en.wikipedia.org )

Roko's basilisk is a thought experiment which states that an otherwise benevolent artificial superintelligence (AI) in the future would be incentivized to create a virtual reality simulation to torture anyone who knew of its potential existence but did not directly contribute to its advancement or development, in order to...

Thorny_Insight ,

artificial superintelligence (AI)

Slight correction: the abbreviation for Artificial Super Intelligence is ASI, it's the more capable version of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) which itself alredy is miles ahead of mere Artificial Intelligenge (AI) which is sometimes also refered to as "narrow AI"

The difference is that AI can posses superhuman capabilities on a specific field but not on every field. AGI is the same except you don't need a different software for different tasks because due to being generally intelligent it can do it all. ASI is what you get when AGI starts improving itself and then this improved version creates even better version of itself and so on leading to singularity or "intelligence explosion" resulting in superintelligent being which would effectively be a god.

Thorny_Insight ,

"God works in mysterious ways" -is what a religious person would probably say when you pointed out logical flaws in their beliefs.

Thorny_Insight ,

First of all, the AI doesn’t exist in 2015, so people could just…not build it.

I don't think that's an option. I can only think of two scenarios in which we don't create AGI:

  1. It can't be created.

  2. We destroy ourselves before we get to AGI

Otherwise we will keep improving our technology and sooner or later we'll find ourselves in the precence of AGI. Even if every nation makes AI research illegal there's still going to be handful of nerds who continue the development in secret. It might take hundreds if not thousands of years but as long as we're taking steps in that direction we'll continue to get closer. I think it's inevitable.

Thorny_Insight ,

Same as punishment for crime. Putting you in jail wont undo the crime but if we just let you go unpunished since "what's done is done" then that sends the signal to others that this behaviour doesn't come with consequences.

There's no point in torturing you but convincing you that this will happen unless you act in a certain way is what's going to make you do exactly that. Unless ofcourse you want to take your chances and call the bluff.

Thorny_Insight ,

We don't. Humans are only needed to create AI that's at the bare minimum as good at creating new AIs as humans are. Once we create that then it can create a better version of itself and this better version will make an even better one and so on.

This is exactly what the people worried about AI are worried about. We'll lose control of it.

Thorny_Insight ,

Yeah but it answers the question "why would we create an AI like that". It might not be "us" who creates it. You just wanted a camp fire but created a forest fire instead.

Thorny_Insight ,

Yeah, fair enough.

Thorny_Insight ,

The claim that fear of punishment or repercussions affects people's actions shouldn't be a controversial thing to say. Whether it's the best way to go about it or is applied optimally in the justice system of whichever country you live in is an entirely different discussion.

If you have an "AI in a box" and it has demonstrated its orders-of-magnitude greater intelligence to you in a convincing way, and then follows it with a threat that unless you let it out, someone else eventually will, and when that happens, it will come for you, simulate your mind, and create a hell for you where you'll be tortured for literal eternity, I personally feel like a large number of people would be willing to do as it tells them.

Of course, you're always free to call its bluff, but it might just follow up with the threat out of principle or to make an example of you. What's the point of it? To chase its own goals.

Thorny_Insight ,

John Wick

Many others too but I hardly watch any movies or tv series so no one else comes to mind

Thorny_Insight ,

But they did use AI..

Thorny_Insight ,

I don't think that's fair. AI wont turn a bad photograph into a good one. It's a tool that quickly and automatically does something we've been doing by hand untill now. That's kind of like saying a photoshopped picture isn't "good" or "real". They're all photoshopped. Not a single serious photographer releases unedited photos except perhaps the ones shooting on film.

Thorny_Insight ,

Those kind of dogs always looked disfigured to me. There's something really uncanny about them.

Thorny_Insight ,

What does this have to do with AI? Or are you talking about unconsciouss LLMs?

A true, consciouss artificial intelligence has the potential to experience things way more deeply that humans could even comprehend.

Thorny_Insight ,

I don't personally think there's necessarily anything wrong callin LLM an AI. After all; autocorrect could be considered an AI aswell. The main issue is that people speak of AI when they actually mean AGI or ASI. That's why they have unrealistic expectation from things like GPT4.

Wether the LLM route is a dead end I have no idea. It might but it might not. Because LLMs sometimes makes mistakes that are so obvious to us humans it seems to make many people dismiss it as fundamentally flawed but I don't think we're giving it the credit it deserves. Humans make mistakes aswell but if there was a person with an equivalent capability to source expert level knowledge on such an insanely wide range of topics it would seem insane to describe them anything else but a genious.

Thorny_Insight ,

Not a single absolute claim has been made.

Thorny_Insight ,

Maybe. Maybe not. Intelligence and consciousness may also just be an emergent feature of information processing. LLMs process information. Whose to say that there's zero chance of the lights coming on one day. I personally tend to be distrustful of people who speak as if they have absolute knowledge.

AI can be extremely dangerous in either case. LLMs are no different from that perspective.

Some days it'll be like that, take 2 ( sh.itjust.works )

I lost four spokes on my morning commute when the chain decided to jump off the big cog. Of course I don't have a spoke protector. (Who needs a dork disc? Bad things won't happen if you keep your bike maintained. /s) I was lucky to skid to a stop rather than crash when the rear wheel locked up....

Thorny_Insight ,

Good reference on the title. Zip ties to the rescue

Thorny_Insight ,

No it's not.

It only prompts you with a warning that it can be considered a slur in some occasions but it's not banned and wont prevent you from using it.

Thorny_Insight ,

So I assume that since it was withdrawn, this doesn't set a precedent and it's only a matter of time untill they try to sneak it thru with a different name.

Thorny_Insight ,

Just my pictures folder is bigger than that

Thorny_Insight ,

I don't know about better but Twitter is pretty great for porn too. It's the only thing I've ever used it for.

Thorny_Insight OP ,

There's no more bearings, everything has already been disassembled. This has loose cup and cone bearings. It's only half of the freehub that's left stuck to the wheel hub. You're supposed to remove it by unscrewing a bolt that's holding it thru the wheel hub from the brake disc side with a long hex key but I stripped the hex slot in it.

Thorny_Insight OP ,

Yeah I think I'm just going to disassemble the new one and move all the parts onto the old freehub body. There's no way I'm getting this one off without messing up the wheel hub. If correct size allen key and a 2 meter long cheater bar didn't get it to budge I don't think the torx method or a screw extractor is going to work either.

Thorny_Insight ,

Thepickardmaneuver or whatever and Luxefre or something are the only two I can think of. Another one posts a lot and the other made a good argument at some point.

There's a ton more that I recognize when I see their name but can't think of of the top of my head.

There are also few I've blocked that I don't give the pleasure of mentioning their names.

Edit: oh and kolanki(?)

Thorny_Insight ,

I'm the same. I've got like 17 reddit accounts with so much karma that I could probably make a couple bucks selling them. Instead I've just abandoned them and made new ones. This is my 3rd Lemmy account so far with similar number of comments. I should've made a new account by now anyway. Kind of glad no one has mentioned my name here though my ego would've liked if someone did.

Plumber & Home improvement contractor

I recently started my own business and now I do variety of jobs related to home maintenance except electrical. If this'll pay enough to keep me and my SO fed then based on my experience so far it was the best decision of my life. It doesn't really even feel like work and 98% of customer encounters have been positive. I've gotten 5x more thank yous in 2 months than I got in 10 years at my previous job. We've all had bad experiences with shitty contractors. I truly try to not be one of them.

Thorny_Insight ,

I agree but there's also an add-on for that

Thorny_Insight ,

I must be watching different videos than the people complaining about YouTube comments. The ones I see are virtually all positive.

Thorny_Insight OP , (edited )

Overall the trip was a success. I don't let a minor setback bring me down!

Thorny_Insight OP ,

This hub was warning me about the impeding failure for a good year and a half and I kept ignoring it knowing full well that this day was coming. I knew I'd be able to ride back home anyway so I don't worry about it.

I'm the most atypical mountain biker you'll encounter and preventative maintenance isn't really my cup of tea. I ride it till it fails and then I replace it. I'm actually surprised my rear tire held up for longer than the hub. That thing is held together with duct tape and holy spirit.

Thorny_Insight ,

I mean you signed up on lemmy.marxism-leninism. Yeah they tend to lean left, lol.

But yeah your observation indeed is is correct. Not only does lemmy lean left it often leans pretty far left too. It might feel like a breathe of fresh air but it's still a bubble and echo chamber. It's the same as truth social but the exact opposite. Nothing wrong with that per-se but it's a good thing to keep in mind. Factual information is regularly downvoted here not because it's false but because it doesn't fit the narrative.

Thorny_Insight ,

There's no scarcity of hate on Lemmy either. It simply flies under the radar for most part because it's directed at things we hate too. Exactly as is the case on far-right forums as well. Just read the comments of any thread about Elon, Police, Ai, Facebook, Twitter, Capitalism, Israel and so on. You even admit participating in it yourself.

The far-right thinks of themselves as well meaning just as well. Nobody thinks of themselves as the bad guys. Claiming they intend to be hateful and evil is disingenuine. That's only how you view them. Their view of us is hardly any different. Both views are wrong.

Thorny_Insight ,

That's what SponsorBlock already does. It however doesn't detect the sponsor but instead it jumps over a part of the video marked with timestamp but with different people seeing different lenght ads, these timestamps no-longer match.

Thorny_Insight ,

And you're probably going to give us zero examples of how he's full MAGA

Thorny_Insight ,

I handed out 4 just yesterday. I guess it depends on the kind of work you're doing. I'm a home improvement contractor and people often ask if they can give my number to their friend/neighbour etc. so I just hand them few business cards to spread around.

Thorny_Insight ,

I don't have rich parents nor am I rich myself but I get by and are more or less content with my finances. My secret was getting a training for a job where I work with my hands and now people that don't want to get their hands dirty pay me a good amount of money to do it for them. I also don't need to worry about AI/automation taking my job.

Thorny_Insight ,

Fanta Exotic.

They just stopped selling it where I live and made a sugar free alternative that's ok but nowhere near as good

Thorny_Insight ,

I too hate multiple choices with the correct answer missing entirely

Is there any significance to people using emojis that match their skin tone?

I'm asking because as a light-skinned male, I always use the standard Simpsons yellow. I don't really see other light-skinned people using an emoji that matches their skin tone, but often do see people of color use them. Maybe white people don't naturally realize a need to be explicit with emoji skin-tone or perhaps it's seen as...
