Considering all the ways they've been ridiculously incompetent in their invasion of Ukraine, I could actually see this incident being due to ineptitude.

ThePowerOfGeek ,
@ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly. They will probably send all the citizens they want to get rid of knowing that they will likely die. It's a win-win for Rocket Man: he gets to eradicate any 'inferior' or 'disloyal' peons while ingratiating himself to Putin.

ThePowerOfGeek ,
@ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world avatar

For those who don't get the reference, I think this is referring to the Mark of Cain teaching in Mormonism. This resulted in black members of the church being seen as lesser or inferior by many white members. The church officially abandoned it as an official teaching in 1978. But the stigma for black members still persists to some degree unofficially, with some white church members still believing it today.

Russia reminds me of the black knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. He has all his limbs cut off by Arthur, to the point where he's just a useless torso perched on the ground. But he's still defiantly insulting Arthur and looking for a fight.

ThePowerOfGeek ,
@ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world avatar

He's been listening to his pal Trump too much. But the pro-Russian contingent is less significant in the UK than it is in the US.

Dell announced a new return-to-office initiative earlier this year. In the new plan, workers had to classify themselves as remote or hybrid.

Those who classified themselves as hybrid are subject to a tracking system that ensures they are in a physical office 39 days a quarter, which works out to close to three days per work week.

Alternatively, by classifying themselves as remote, workers agree they can no longer be promoted or hired into new roles within the company.

Holy corporate oppression, Batman! That's a shitty deal no matter which option you choose.

I'm glad they've got themselves into a sticky situation.

Also, this observation was funny (in a sad way):

One person said they'd spoken with colleagues who had chosen to go hybrid, and those colleagues reported doing work in mostly empty offices punctuated with video calls with people who were in other mostly empty offices.

ThePowerOfGeek ,
@ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world avatar

Nope, he can't manage that. Because he's an attention-whoring malignant narcissist.

I can't wait for the bubble of mystique to pop on this arsehole, if only so we don't have to ever hear from or about him again. Sadly, there are still plenty of rubes in his cult of personality and greedy investors willing to ride his coattails. So I'm not holding my breath.

Oh there's still far too much adulation. All those Tesla bros, for example. Given what an insufferable turd Musk is, and the crumby reputation Teslas have, I don't understand it. And I don't think I ever will.

His whole Western obsession/trope is getting really old. I wish they'd quit with these shitty western movies starring dollar store Eastwood.

Comparing himself to Churchill defending the UK from the Nazis has got to be the shittiest analogy I've heard in a long time. You aren't Churchill in this situation, Netanyahu. You're the invader hell-bent on wiping out a population.

ThePowerOfGeek ,
@ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world avatar

That is a very fair point!

There's already a strong emotional connection between Irish and Palestinian people (as shown by Ireland being one of the first European countries to officially recognize Palestine recently). Now there's another association - Churchill and Netanyahu's loathing for their respective people.

ThePowerOfGeek ,
@ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world avatar

Oh he was a total shitheel to so many different people. Very effective wartime leader, but a horrible human being.

ThePowerOfGeek ,
@ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world avatar

I like your suggestion. Use the psychological products of Western capitalism and the free market to counter the toxicity of the Russian state. I think it would work very well if we get the implementation right. Because right now Russia's most effective enemy is themselves (more specifically: their self-loathing, self-sabotaging mindset).

ThePowerOfGeek ,
@ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world avatar

Yes it does. And it's only going to get worse. Not saying that plane travel will become untenable. But we're all going to have to brace for extra safety measures and the repercussions of more frequent and severe turbulence.

Pope Francis apologizes for using a homophobic slur during a meeting with bishops | CNN ( www.cnn.com )

“The Pope never intended to offend or express himself in homophobic terms, and he extends his apologies to those who felt offended by the use of a term, as reported by others,” the Vatican said in a Tuesday statement....

ThePowerOfGeek ,
@ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world avatar

The 87-year-old pontiff reportedly made the homophobic remark in a closed-door meeting last week as he told Italian bishops that gay men shouldn’t be allowed to train for the priesthood.

Well, they'd better brace for an even more severe priest shortage then. I've met many Catholic priests over the years, and based on their mannerisms, I'd estimate that a sizeable minority were nearly falling out of the closet. Not a big deal IMO, as most of them were good guys as far as priests go. They cared about and wanted to do what was best for their parishioners. And they took their commitment to the church very seriously. But excluding them from the seminary will just make the current priest shortage even worse.

And Israel's hissy fit intensifies.

It's amazing how they've pissed away so much good will for the horrible acts they endured on Oct 7th, and they are now pariahs to the large majority of the international community. They are on a hell of a 'victim to villain' speed run.

Ireland, Spain and Norway to recognise Palestinian state ( www.theguardian.com )

Ireland, Spain and Norway have announced they will formally recognise a Palestinian state on 28 May, triggering an immediate response from Israel, which said it would retaliate by recalling its ambassadors from Dublin, Madrid and Oslo, and withholding vital funds from the Palestinian Authority....

ThePowerOfGeek ,

Israel, which said it would retaliate by recalling its ambassadors from Dublin, Madrid and Oslo, and withholding vital funds from the Palestinian Authority.

The Israeli government (and many but not all Israeli people) will seize on any excuse they can to punish the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian people at this point. So tying such actions to the recent decisions of Ireland, Norway, Spain, or whoever else is very disingenuous.

They want all the Palestinians to suffer, and preferably disappear forever. These punitive steps are just a means to that end.

The more he talks about this topic the less enthused I am about his candidacy. I mean, the alternative is fucking horrible. But it would be nice to have a better choice than between 'bad and terrible', at least when it comes to foreign policy.

Trump Supporter Trolls Trial With Penis Balloons Featuring Alvin Bragg, Judge Merchan Faces ( www.thedailybeast.com )

In a way MTG is an inspiration to all. She's proof that even the dumbest, most wretched fucking idiot with no redeeming qualities can have a successful career. Unfortunately for the rest of us, her career is as a hate-mongering, shit heel politician.

It will take a profound cultural shift, to the point where most people use their critical thinking skills to check the veracity of outrageous deep fake media clips. Is that likely to happen? Not really. But even if we can just increase critical thinking abilities by 10% that would be progress.

As a side note, it seems like most politicians who are caught saying outrageous things will do one of two things: deny them vociferously, or proudly brag and confirm that yes, they said/did that. So maybe it won't be as hard to find the truth as we first think? Though that's probably just me being overly optimistic.

Corporate real estate is on a 'cliff edge' as firms race to rethink communal spaces ( www.bbc.com )

As more employees work from home in the hybrid-work era, many companies are finding they need smaller offices. Compared to pre-pandemic floorplans designed to house as many workers as possible, more businesses are looking towards more compact but higher-quality spaces for the future....

ThePowerOfGeek ,
@ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world avatar

No, you don't understand. Corporations need those open office hellscapes to leverage their protective synergies, to maximize their dynamic paradigms, and to fulfill various other nuggets of marketing buzzword bullshit.

Oh, and because they don't trust the worker bee employees as far as they can throw them, and because they need to keep the legion of mostly incompetent middle management busy so the C-level muckity-mucks can continue to stiff everyone who works for or uses the company to get fatter bonuses.

(Hmm, I think my cynicism escaped.)

Self-hosted website for posting web novel/fiction

Hey hello, self-hosting noob here. I just want to know if anyone would know a good way to host my writing. Something akin to those webcomic sites, except for writing. Multiple stories with their own "sections" (?) and a chapter selection for each. Maybe a home page or profile page to just briefly detail myself or whatever, I...

I don't have a direct answer to your question. But I advise caution in putting your creative works online in the way you are planning. Between people plagiarizing it (either word for word or just the broader concepts) and AIs doing similar things, you could find that your work gets stolen.

Self-publishing might at least give you a bit of inherent copyright protection. Then at least you will have an ISBN associated to it, and you can always host your stories somewhere (WordPress, Medium, etc.).

If you want to self-publish your stories a free service like Smash Words would work.

So they are labeling a brand new (and obviously flawed) AI as a priest, but women (who are human beings) still can't be priests?

Sorry ladies, you've now fallen further down the ladder.

  • Regular straight Catholic men - acceptable priest
  • Gay Catholic men - acceptable priest (as long as they don't get caught)
  • Male converted Anglican priests - acceptable priest (in some scenarios)
  • Catholic men with gross sexual habits - acceptable priest
  • Flawed AIs - acceptable priest
  • Corporations - soon to be priests?
  • Catholic women - ABSOLUTELY NOT!

I don't think the vast majority of American Christians are anywhere near ready to accept a Christian denomination founded by and led by women. Which is a shame. I think such a denomination would have some interesting and probably beneficial perspectives to share.

But given how Christianity has been male-led from the very beginning, how it stemmed from another male-led religion, and how engrained into American Christian society it is for women to be docile, obedient child production machines... Yeah, that ain't happening for a looong time!
