Supreme Court weakens federal regulators with Chevron overturning, threatening net neutrality, right to repair, big tech regulation, and more ( www.theverge.com )

The downfall of Chevron deference could completely change the ways courts review net neutrality, according to Bloomberg Intelligence’s Matt Schettenhelm. “The FCC’s 2024 effort to reinstitute federal broadband regulation is the latest chapter in a long-running regulatory saga, yet we think the demise of deference will...

It's simply an institution meant to interpret laws and their legality. All of that goes out the window when the people in said institution are politically charged, corrupt, or make bad arguments.

TheGalacticVoid ,

For some justices, I agree. However, as a general principle, I think of the vast majority of "bad people" as incompetent rather than malicious unless there's proof of guilt. I don't know enough about all 9 justices to comfortably say they're evil or corrupt.

The merger is still something that I'm 50/50 on because it made T-Mobile's service so much more reliable, and iirc Sprint was genuinely struggling.

It still sucks that Boost isn't going anywhere

TheGalacticVoid ,

To add onto what other commenters said:

  1. It isn't legally mandated, only customary
  2. If it was mandatory, such a mandate would probably be illegal
  3. Plenty of teachers and school officials (but not most) will be pissed/will punish you if you don't do the pledge.
TheGalacticVoid ,

Is it not proprietary due to carriers being extremely fussy?

TheGalacticVoid ,

India is a huge market for WhatsApp

TheGalacticVoid ,

I don't know why you're getting downvoted. The problem isn't the fact that the indicator exists. A lot of it is because it's an ugly green bubble, and Apple refuses to change it because bullying kids is great marketing for Apple.

TheGalacticVoid ,

Clothing gets you negative comments. iMessage gets people to exclude you from group chats or even text messaging completely. It's become far more socially acceptable to isolate someone because of what they don't own.

Even if this were the same level of bullying, the amount of resources that Apple needs to fix this is negligible compared to clothing companies or whathaveyou. You can't update a shirt. You can easily update the color of a bubble or implement an industry standard. Apple refuses to even try to fix this issue, and in my eyes, they're 100% complicit in enabling bullying.

TheGalacticVoid ,

I think projects like this are good, but I really don't want governments to create their own version of XYZ for the sake of creating clones of XYZ. I'm scared that all this will do is fragment an almost-universal collection of open-source projects into regional variants for no real reason.

TheGalacticVoid ,

Remember, if Meta can collect your data this way, any bad actor or government can as well.

TheGalacticVoid ,

That is my point. What isn't necessarily obvious, though, is that the scrapable data is more comprehensive than what could be scraped on traditional platforms

TheGalacticVoid ,

Please do Chrome first, though. At least Edge has introduced solid features, whereas Google has a history of limiting other browsers on its websites to promote Chrome.

He probably got a good sentence considering he never stepped foot in a US prison

TheGalacticVoid ,

The US government isn't gonna do anything like this unless it causes a huge fuss. The agencies responsible don't get enough funding to properly regulate the stuff they're supposed to, and they have to prioritize as a result.

I'm sure companies know this very well. Our rights as consumers have been slowly decaying for years, and we haven't seen much government action until recently.

TheGalacticVoid ,

Why not make a better UI after ironing out the bugs?

Why not serve fried chicken on Juneteenth? How is it different from serving corned beef on St. Patrick’s day? ( old.lemmy.world )

Disclaimer: I am not trolling, I am an autistic person who doesn’t understand so many social nuances. Also I am from New Hampshire (97% white), so I just don’t have any close African-American friends that I am willing to risk asking such a loaded question.

TheGalacticVoid ,

The way I see it isn't that stereotypes are inherently awful, it's that they have various levels of impact. Racism against African Americans is considered more heavily because they have such a long history of oppression that not many other groups have had. Most other groups didn't meet fierce resistance to obtaining basic rights for as long as they did

TheGalacticVoid ,

In most US states, you can be fired for any reason that isn't explicitly illegal.

TheGalacticVoid ,

Disagree in some cases. A good chunk of YouTubers make good use of their "no new effort" earnings by reinvesting it into their channel. The end result is either better content or more of it

TheGalacticVoid ,

When using the right tools, phones are already incredibly powerful in an educational environment. There's a reason why Kahoot achieved meme status: it's because students love it.

TheGalacticVoid ,

As an American, it's really sad to see the EU fall into this trap.

Is it more energy efficient to charge a phone/tablet using a desktop/laptop while your computer is being used vs using the charger? ( kbin.run )

I was just thinking if you are on your computer anyway would it just use some of the excess electricity that your computer would have wasted or would it be worse than charging your phone from a charger while using your laptop separately.

TheGalacticVoid ,

I remember seeing an experiment saying that the difference is negligible. Even if it isn't, it's far more important to keep your battery between 20 and 80 percent at all times.

TheGalacticVoid ,

I don't agree with that video, and I'm sure that a good chunk of talented creators wouldn't appreciate losing control of their own works. Copyright needs to be rewritten, but abolished is quite a huge overcorrection

TheGalacticVoid ,

I already understand the point of the video. I'm saying that the point of the video doesn't reflect the wishes and wills of all artists. If someone pours their heart and soul into something, they should have reasonable control over how that something is used by other people. The last thing we want is to demotivate those artists from making great works.

TheGalacticVoid ,

Reasonable control in the legal sense does matter though. Right now, a majority of creatives don't own their IP in the legal sense, and they can't stop large companies from milking their works dry as a result. In the absence of IP laws, creatives would be able to create their works, but they'd also be competing against companies that have the resources to monetize, influence the general public, and kill the franchise through poor choices.

It's really important to know that the vast majority of people aren't going to have the goodwill to tip or otherwise support free works, and it's even less likely if a large company does enough marketing to overshadow an artist.

Now that DuckDuckGo is out. Give me your search prompts and I'll answer them as best I can. That includes images (based on what I have saved on my PC). So what is it you wish to know or see?

Edit: Due to popular demand FatTony Search servers are down for the time being. but has gone open source just in time (Yes that's how it works 😡) . You may now get responses from other users. Servers will be back up some time later.

Weight is often something that people can't control. There are many reasons why someone can be overweight or obese.

TheGalacticVoid ,

If you ignore the reasons why someone might eat too many calories relative to what their specific body needs, then yes.

TheGalacticVoid ,

Purely speculating, but it sounds like he's clinically depressed, and weight gain is often a byproduct of depression. Depression is considered a disability at the federal level, so he's potentially part of a protected class.

I personally don't buy the "he's big and tall and it's distracting" argument. From what I can tell, this wasn't part of a film set or the like; it's just a normal party. Since he's a server, what about his appearance is stopping him from doing his job? If appearance matters so much, what's stopping his employer for providing a new outfit? Companies are legally required to provide accommodations in this case if the server has a disability, which might be the case.

From the few excerpts I've read, this just seems like a few judgemental execs didn't want someone to get paid because of his weight, and I have 0 sympathy for that BS. The only other take I've seen is that due to space constraints, having him would be an occupational hazard, which is fair.

TheGalacticVoid ,

Such a noble cause. Shareholders were ignored for too long!

TheGalacticVoid ,

"Hey you're complaining about all the asbestos you had in your house but you still had asbestos in your house...what's up with that?"

Past choices don't reflect present knowledge or values. This is true on both a personal and societal level.

TheGalacticVoid ,

Same is true for dating and green flags.

TheGalacticVoid ,

The difference between pirates and drug dealers is that the former tends to need some level of tech literacy.

TheGalacticVoid ,

I don't think they are. In my view, social media is either personal ( i.e. pictures on Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat ) or short + very mainstream ( Twitter, TikTok). Reddit has too many niches that collectively make up an enormous chunk of the platform, plus it is very anonymous. I'd argue that the same is true of YouTube, and a lot of the content is closer to TV and journalism.

TheGalacticVoid ,

The brand where some people are purposefully more free than others? More freedom sounds more better, no?

/s

TheGalacticVoid ,

I don't like this mindset, because while there are plenty of businesses, billionaires, and governments that keep burning coal to keep their cash flowing, there's plenty of scientists, activists, engineers, governments, and organizations that are making a difference. We shouldn't be discrediting the hard work of people who are trying to save us or at least delay doomsday.

TheGalacticVoid ,

They're probably just a kid who can't easily afford games.

TheGalacticVoid ,

Yes, but only if we can send negative weapons

(/s)

TheGalacticVoid ,

Can't speak for the UK/EU, but in the US, there's a long history of state governments trying to disenfranchise minority voters, especially in the South where slavery was legal for longer. This was accomplished in the past with so-called "literacy tests," and more recently by closing certain polling booths or understaffing them. Since millions of Americans don't have IDs that fit strict standards, many see these voter-ID laws as another form of disenfranchisement.

They killed the first guy through years of abuse, not by directly killing him.

TheGalacticVoid ,

If Boeing supplied the bullet, it would've shattered before it left the gun

TheGalacticVoid ,

Didn't the first guy's family talk about how he was depressed out of his mind and barely knew the woman who made those claims?

You can blame Boeing for abusing and causing mental and ultimately physical deterioration of their QA staff. You can't blame them for faking suicide or giving someone pneumonia.

I still personally think that criminal charges need to be filed against their managers or coworkers, even if it's not for murder.

GitHub has to comply with the DMCA. You wouldn't have a case against them if you wanted to sue.

Literally every repo that got DMCA'd had an opportunity to fight back, and they chose to cave instead. I don't see why repositories going down is a reflection of GitHub's ethics.

TheGalacticVoid ,

They convinced GitHub to send takedown notices, which can be appealed. They're legally required to do this under the DMCA.
