Is it practically impossible for a newcomer selfhost without using centralised services, and get DDOSed or hacked?

I understand that people enter the world of self hosting for various reasons. I am trying to dip my toes in this ocean to try and get away from privacy-offending centralised services such as Google, Cloudflare, AWS, etc....

TheButtonJustSpins OP ,

Did not work. Thank you for the suggestion, though!
Good news is, for this project, I just learned I can avoid having to do this, so.. at least that's something.

TheButtonJustSpins OP ,

Okay, I actually do need to seek. However, something about going out over bluetooth instead of over the headphone jack has made it work, so.. no idea, but there you go. (Or maybe it's something else that I did, but, either way, it's working, so.. cool.)

How many people actually want fully on-site IT jobs?

I've been looking for a new job as a software developer. The huge majority of job listings I see in my area are hybrid or remote. I just had an introductory phone call with Vizio (which didn't specify the location type in the job listing). The recruiter told me that the job was fully on-site, which I told her was a deal breaker...

TheButtonJustSpins ,

I've been remote for over a decade; not going to stop now.

If you're not paying for a service, you're likely being monetized by watching ads or providing personal data to companies that don't necessarily have your best interests at heart.

This is a bit out of date. Nowadays, you pay for the service and are monetized by watching ads and providing personal data to companies that definitely don't have your best interests at heart.

Note that the people verifying that picture are not the people who set the policies or systems in place. You abused an innocent who's just trying to earn some bread, you didn't send NSFW materials to Zuck.

Why would you need to continue using the self-signed certificates for the Cloudflare connection? Just use the valid certificate for all connections.

TheButtonJustSpins OP , (edited )

Okay, I've got it offloaded to a different process and I can cancel that process now. However, is there anything I need to do to let it access GPIO? It looks like it's working but nothing is coming out of the passive buzzer when I'm playing it off the other process.

EDIT: I think I got it with threading. Thanks!

I converted this into python; you can see it here.

Edit: Err, you will be able to see it there once I get to my laptop and make it public.

Edit: Public now!

What email provider do you use for sign ups?

I used to use Protonmail, however the verification steps become tedious when creating unique emails for sign ups. I've switched to Tutanota despite it contravening their one account policy. What do you all use for one off emails (for sign ups etc )? Or do you prefer one of those 10 minute email sites?

TheButtonJustSpins ,

If you're paying for Proton, you have access to SimpleLogin, which lets you make unique addresses that will forward to your real address. You can even respond from those addresses.

There are several other services that do the same thing (e.g., AnonAddy).

The issue is keeping them working. My wife has iPods (gen 3?). We've backed Tangara in the hope that it will replicate the experience and let us finally replace them. It's surprisingly difficult (read: impossible) to get something that plays music, has a wakeup alarm, and has a sleep timer.

TheButtonJustSpins ,
  1. Touchscreen. Needs physical buttons.
  2. Has too much functionality. Not good for sleep hygiene.

Why Your VPN May Not Be As Secure As It Claims ( krebsonsecurity.com )

Virtual private networking (VPN) companies market their services as a way to prevent anyone from snooping on your Internet usage. But new research suggests this is a dangerous assumption when connecting to a VPN via an untrusted network, because attackers on the same network could force a target’s traffic off of the protection...

TheButtonJustSpins ,

Why does running the VPN in a VM mitigate the attack?

TheButtonJustSpins ,

Both. For physical documents, you add an ASN and store the document in a binder in ASN order.

How should I change my polite behavior to be more accommodating?

My parents raised me to always say "yes sir" and "no ma'am", and I automatically say it to service workers and just about anyone with whom I'm not close that I interact with. I noticed recently that I had misgendered a cashier when saying something like "no thank you, ma'am" based on their appearing AFAB, but on a future visit...

TheButtonJustSpins ,

I'd drop it altogether, but maybe replace with "friend" as a midway point where you feel the need?

TheButtonJustSpins ,

Stop showing deference. No gods, no masters!

TheButtonJustSpins ,

Thanks, boss.

If you could take a single character out of a piece of media (book, film, TV show, video game, etc) who would it be?

They would lose any magical powers they may have had in the book, but anything they are, rather than can do, will stay. For example people from the His Dark Materials world would keep their daemons. You can take them out at any time in the story's plot, but for all other people consuming the media, it will be shown that the...

TheButtonJustSpins ,

Wait, I can remove them from the story but then I have to deal with them?

Also, life and intelligent life are two different things.
