You do need a registration key, but now it's tied to the hardware so it activates as soon as you connect to the network, no need to actually type the registration key.

Microsoft has gone too far: including a Game Pass ad in the Settings app ushers in a whole new age of ridiculous over-advertising ( www.techradar.com )

Windows 11 is getting out of hand with its push for advertisments, frankly - remember the recent full-screen pop-up to persuade users to install Edge or other Microsoft services? Then another advertisment was placed in the Start menu, and now Microsoft has finally worn my temper thin - with a new Game Pass ad coming to the...

It's time to ditch Windows and all move to macOS or (even better) Linux

Scrollone ,

I agree, I use Linux. But "normal people" aren't able to install an operating system, and they can't easily go to the shop and buy a Linux computer. They can buy a mac though. Still better than nothing.

Scrollone ,

Yes, but... it's like comparing people that go to the cinema and people who watch reels on Instagram.

Okay, both things involve watching a video, but they are two very different experiences.

Scrollone ,

To be honest, OBS is way more advanced than a screen recording tool. It's basically a live program director

Good luck finding Netflix for $2

thinks deleting installers will delete the installed program

Now I get why Windows XP had an alert that said you weren't going to uninstall the program when you tried deleting a link to a program

Scrollone ,

So maybe we shouldn't worry after all? Future generations will make fun of us because we can use Windows XP fine but we don't understand how TikTok works?

TorrentGalaxy is up, but if you can't open it maybe your country has DNS censorship.

Just change your DNS servers to something like 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 (Cloudflare DNS and Google DNS respectively).

You can change your DNS from either your computer settings or your router (the latter is recommended because it applies to all connected devices).

Scrollone ,

Torrent forum? That's interesting. I've only used private torrent trackers like TL. Any recommendations?

Scrollone ,

TorrentLeech, DigitalCore Club... they both sometimes open registrations

Scrollone ,

You can always start creating your own personal media server, using apps such as Plex or Jellyfin, and qBittorrent, SABnzbd, etc.

Scrollone ,

Wasn't Jellyfin developed using the Emby source code as a starting point?

Scrollone ,

I think there's a misconception.

Plex can "hide" (not really) your own server because you can direct your users on Plex.tv (they can login there, etc. without ever typing your IP address).

But Plex can also use an internal reverse proxy that lets you see your content from outside even without port forwarding. However, quality and speed will be decreased.

I think Jellyfin should work to ease the process of setting up your server as much as they can, but unless they start managing a SaaS like Plex does, they'll never be able to offer the same simplicity for the end user.

From your stats, it's clear that the first fall was caused by Facebook and smartphones.

Scrollone ,

Yes, we just have to collectively make Lemmy grow until it's a true and complete replacement for classical monolith websites such as Reddit and Facebook groups.

Scrollone ,

Discord is awful for everything that's not live audio chatting. And even in that case, I think Telegram groups work better.

Scrollone ,

Good luck troubleshooting problems when an update of Windows breaks something.

Just switch to Linux and call it a day.

Scrollone ,

You're partially right, but it would be better if users were evenly spread on many instances.

Imagine if one instance becomes so big and then they de-federate. For normal users, nothing would change, but then we would have created the new R*ddit

Reddit has stopped being a good guy a long time ago.

RIP Aaron Swartz

There's a new search engine called Yep, made by the team at Ahrefs, a SEO tool SaaS.

It looks promising because they have their own index, but it's a bit slow sometimes.

When you buy something, the seller pays a VAT tax (something about 17% to 23% of your purchase, depending on the country).

If I'm a French company and I sell something to a customer in Finland (we would be both in the EU) taxes would be paid in either France or Finland (it depends on the kind of thing I'm selling and the kind of customer).

If I understand correctly, they want to tax digital services in the place where the work is actually generated. So, in France.

Scrollone ,

Ahh now I understand the reasoning, and I completely agree.

To be fair, some things are already taxed in the place where work is created, regardless of the company headquarters. E.g. event tickets (VAT is always applied in the country where the event is taking place)

Netflix Windows app is set to remove its downloads feature, while introducing ads ( www.techradar.com )

Netflix has managed to annoy a good number of its users with an announcement about an upcoming update to its Windows 11 (and Windows 10) app: support for adverts and live events will be added, but the ability to download content is being taken away....

Unfortunately, R#ddit is still a great resource for that. Check out the /r/Piracy wiki.

To summarize, Usenet is made up by servers that host all the "newsgroups", but nowadays newsgroups are used to share files (like email attachments).

You don't need to know anything about Usenet itself, the things you need are three:

  • an indexer (they let you find nzb files, like torrent files)
  • a Usenet server subscription (where files are actually stored)
  • a client to download from that server (nzbget and SABnzbd are the two most used)

Good luck!

In Italy nobody gives a fuck, unless you start making people pay for your piracy service (e.g. illegal sports streaming)

It's literally their web app put in a Chrome window.

It's outrageous. The Mac version of Outlook is way better, and it's native!!

Microsoft Team has always been a webapp

They don't need to republish the 60 million questions, they just have to credit the authors, which are surely way fewer (but IANAL)

10 POINTS!!

No, domain names are tied to a person and, even if that person register the domain with fake person details, there will be a digital payment associated with the purchase.

Honestly I'm on a IPv6 provider (with CGNAT for IPv4-only services) and everything works fine.

I think people are just lazy.

Scrollone , (edited )

Luckily I haven't noticed any restrictions.

My provider uses the same IPv4 for four different customers, and it lets each one of them use a different range of 12000 ports each (of course, the random user on ports 1-12000 is the "luckiest" one because he could theoretically host a website on port 80 or 443).

But this means I can expose my Torrent client or Plex or any other services on a custom port, directly forwarded.

It works really well in my experience. The provider is Free (France).

Let's hope that the EU steps in. It's the only institution in which I have some faith left in...

I use my Microsoft account with a standard OTP app, you don't need their own app.

Here we are, spam has finally arrived on the fediverse

You don't have to do it! :)

One of the original maintainers of Simple Mobile Tools forked the project and he's adding new features and fixing bugs.

The project is called Fossify and you can already download the apps from both Play store and F-Droid
