Nobody likes a sucker, especially the kind that fall for fruit tarts like you. I knew there was trouble. I could smell it on the hot evening breeze. Fortunately for me, trouble is my favorite thing… Because I’m Joe Milkshake. I kicked down the door with one swift, decisive motion.

Oh you know what the hell it is ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services ( www.theguardian.com )

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

"piracy"

... Wait, no. Piracy is the answer!

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

She later said Telstra had contacted her and offered a free Fetch box, which she acknowledged was a “reasonable resolution”.

And we have learned exactly nothing here. See you in 2 years when Fetch closes down and you are not getting anything back because you actually did not "buy" those movies on Fetch but on the previous platform.

Awesome! Also great its just one breaking change. I think I don't use that variable, don't recall it at all.

r/sysadmin and the size of this community

So I have been a part of this community for a while and it seems pretty quiet. I know Lemmy is not as big as Reddit so this community will always be much smaller but I kind of miss the activity on r/sysadmin. Infinity for Reddit still works for view only so I have been scrolling though posts on Reddit as some of the stories and...

Fully agree. I see this sentiment so often, "we gotta tell people from reddit how great it is here!"
This might work with something like a meme community, but once it becomes a bit less mainstream you need people to make that decision themselves. It will look needy and annoying to try and "educate" them about how supposedly great it is here.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

How the fuck are you making this about nationality?

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Flat fee is good. If its subscription I am hoping for forks.

Edit: also, I don't care what they say they plan to do. In the end actions matter. They can say now its just a small flat fee but 6 months in they can change their mind and make the crappiest micro transaction model they can think of.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Well, if those were "legitimate" ads the OS would have ways of shutting those down.

That aside, anyone thinking that's the last time they'll try that shit is oblivous. It will come back, because why not. Only solution is to finally stop using Windows if you can, or at least dual boot.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Same, anything peddling crypto and implying the user may earn it through no actual work being done, is suspicious.

Searx-NG works well enough for me in 90% of cases, may not be perfect yet but if it keeps getting developed it will get better. I love those random redirectors that send you to a random instance, no centralised site you depend on then.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Exactly the same crap as a year ago with Reddit. Just like back then users need to go somewhere else and learn from the experience.

Before people are like eh eh anti-vaxx blabla or ha ha we knew this had side-effects, since this is still a for profit company, this part is quite important:

AstraZeneca said the vaccine was being removed from markets for commercial reasons. It said the vaccine was no longer being manufactured or supplied, having been superseded by updated vaccines that tackle new variants.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

This is it. Also given the low quality of the movies production wise you can even rip them at suboptimal settings. I am sure Mom won't care if she watches her Christian propaganda at 4k or 720p with some visual artifacts.

Honestly, 88 1TB drives would make me envious too.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

It will be. We are just not sure yet how because it precisely doesn't work like reddit or Facebook. But I am sure there are ways to manipulate here too, it may just be more elaborate.

They provided the backup e-mail address

Upon receiving the recovery email from Proton Mail, Spanish authorities further requested Apple to provide additional details linked to that email, leading to the identification of the individual.

Just in case anyone thinks they decrypted mails and handed them over, nope. I hadn't thought about that "settings" are not encrypted. Guess if you want to stay anonymous you shouldn't add your private mail address in there as a backup.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

But if you use their service for free, you do not have to provide any identifying info. As far as I am aware there is no check what you enter is legit and there is no requirement to supply a backup address. So the whole solution for a user to stay anonymous as much as they can with Protonmail is simply to not enter any identifying info.

Now? Like a few years back already. For me this started to get ridiculous when Paramount pulled all their Star Trek content from everywhere, putting it all in Paramount+, their own platform. I think by now this is partially reversed again.

Edit, holy shit, just started reading this "article". Did someone not teach their AI model proper grammar and language in general? Hurts to read, fuck that.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Add to that its not even the current android version on it. This company does not sound like they will give you updates so a bad availability of custom ROMs is really limiting.

@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Is that a snake in your pants or are you exc... It's a snake.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Understandable. I am running it since a few months and there weren't that many actually. The most recent one is even opt-in. But I get how its cumbersome to check before an update if anything needs adjusting. Looking forward to a stable release too!

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

https://github.com/bfabiszewski/ulogger-android

You can use it as standalone app to track location at set intervals. But it also has a server app to synchronise to as well. Haven't used it as such, I only record to a file, but maybe this works for your purpose.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Yupp. I am having auto update off actually, because I like to know what apps are getting an update but even manually checking doesn't work well.

I might remember to check for updates, go in, hit refresh and it says no updates there. OK. Good. Then 10 minutes later I get a notification, there are 10 apps to be updated! Not sure why it didn't work 10 minutes ago, but well, whatever.

Don’t Abuse the People
We expect FUTO companies to have an honest relationship with their customers. Ideally revenue comes from customers paying directly for the services provided by company.

Good for the Immich guys, but I fear incoming enshittification or a subscription model.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I don't mind if they are going to charge for it. But since it is selfhosted I hope a fixed price option with maybe still getting some important updates is on the table. If this goes subscription I am out.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I am not sure I understand the issue, are you or are you not wanting to backup those memes? Because in the immich app you can select the folder to backup from, e.g. camera, and in the timeline on my phone in the immich app I only see my camera timeline plus backed up images, but not other folders on my phone.

If you mean they all get backed up from different folders into the same timeline, then yes, that's a bit stupid. I have a situation like that and what I did was to make a separate account on my immich server just for art I find online I am collecting. Then I don't upload through the app, although with switching account you maybe could, but instead move those images into that accounts external library. Then share the whole library of that account with my actual account. Then it appears in the shared tab. But I understand that might get too cumbersome.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Yeah, but I am not paying for their food, I am paying for the software that I selfhost on my system. With that analogy you can justify subscription for everything in life, since in the end, people gotta eat.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Probably less than a bottle and cans get recycled for aluminium, which probably means the plastic gets burned off.

Not saying that's great but in comparison it is better.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Wouldn't this be a usecase for a immutable distro? Cannot really break it? But haven't used one myself yet so not sure how that holds up.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

What kind of a person do you have to be to send out death threats to such people? Just terrible to see this.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Careful. You are waking all the people telling you that it isn't much waste that those power plants produce and its so easy to store it long term.

The same people that likely would oppose a storage like that in their own neighbourhood. I feel often people from outside Germany forget how densely populated it is, it is very hard to find area not somehow close to anyone.

And I would also never trust the promise that this storage next to my home is very definitely going to be so so safe an great.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Anyone here not using an open source launcher after this announcement is seriously learning nothing from this. You are just trusting the next company that either already or eventually will go the same way. Like the dude mentioning Microsoft launcher as alternative, that one has branch analytics baked in as well as far as I remember.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Of course, but when something like that happens to a popular app there will be an outcry. If you are not a tech person you might miss that, but I'd argue if you care about what launcher your phone has and you care about this issue to go foss you are probably the type of person who'd hear about it.

I use KISS launcher but there are many other options mentioned here that are also good. Yes, nothing is exactly like Nova. But lots of other stuff is good too.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Maybe I missed it but my ultimate pet peeve of these articles about scientific breakthroughs is that they neither credit a single name of a scientist in their article nor even just putting a single link to the work. I know its likely behind a paywall (darn you scientific publishing), but still!

I browsed a bit through Nature Communications and haven't seen the article...

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

So they will tell you after latest 2 years that your phone is going to die soon*

*soon defined as anytime between now and the next 10 centuries

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

In my opinion. The majority of computer/phone users is not very technical. They get used to how something they use works. It keeps working as is for a long time.

Then when small changes make it worse, they just accept them. Its just a bit worse. No biggie, then at some point they are used to the new normal. Something else gets worse and the whole thing repeats. It has to be literally unusable before such users switch to a new thing. Like reddits servers need to shut down, that kind of unusable.

95% of users are like that (1).
