I’ve lost weight (finally in the healthy range for my height) and I’ve noticed more guys look at me when I walk by than when I was overweight. I don’t mind and it doesn’t really affect me. I decided a long time ago that what people think about me is their own business and idgaf.

I’ve also got catcalled more while walking, which is not fun and does bother me.

Pandantic ,
@Pandantic@midwest.social avatar

No, more like “Hey, baby!” and “Nice ass!” A couple of times they yelled, “Bitch!” or something similar after, which makes me feel a bit threatened so I watch for the car the rest of the walk, which is annoying and inconvenient.

Pandantic ,
@Pandantic@midwest.social avatar

I think it’s about power or a different mindset (as in, “they will take it as a compliment”). And the “Bitch” was only after I didn’t turn around to look at them when they yelled the “compliment”, I think. They didn’t get the response they wanted so they determined I was a bitch.

Pandantic ,
@Pandantic@midwest.social avatar

I do drive-by compliments too, especially if someone is sporting a fandom I like. I think it’s different when it’s a stranger complimenting a body feature - it implies sexual attraction which can feel objectifying and, unfortunately in the world we live in, unsafe. I don’t know this person, I just know they felt comfortable enough to anonymously shout a comment about a sexual part of my body, so what else do they feel comfortable enough to do?

With the recent issues of transgender people in sports, why don’t we move some sports over to a weight-class system?

Obviously this won’t work for all sports, but things like football, track, soccer, it would allow for de-gendered team, even allowing athletes with the skills but not the genetically-endowed physical attributes to have a place to play....

TIL: Some cephalopods can fly… ( midwest.social )

Some cephalopods are able to fly through the air for distances of up to 50 metres (160 ft). While cephalopods are not particularly aerodynamic, they achieve these impressive ranges by jet-propulsion; water continues to be expelled from the funnel while the organism is in the air. The animals spread their fins and tentacles to...

Yeah but what if we unleash an evil AI on the universe? Our mess spilling over and fucking up nature again.

So there's a story with this one (in description) ( lemmy.world )

The DM's pitch was to roll characters that were the local problem-solvers. Level 5, been adventuring in the same rural area for years, handled bandits/goblins/unruly wildlife. It was an opportunity to play odd/misfit characters for a while if we wanted to....

There’s definitely an argument to be made that the mutants should have the right to live their lives. I guess it depends on how much you think “violence” and “by any means necessary” are justified.

To bring a real world example into the conversation, the Palestinians decided that violence was necessary. Some condemn them for it, some ask “what other choice did they have?”

Obviously, the sympathizers will see you as the hero, and the opponents will see you as the villain. Is it better to go onto hiding like Prof. X and his crew or to stand up and fight like Magneto and his? And how much and what kind of collateral damage is acceptable? It’s a war that has been fought for ages in many different places - the battle between the oppressors and the oppressed.

I’ve only been seriously coding for about 2 years (and not full-time as I have another full time job that I’m trying to get out of) and I almost passed 4/5 of the coding tests that I took for one interview (I did pass one, but realized my solution wouldn’t pass all tests - though it did pass the ones given - so I was working to retool it when time ran out). The 5th one was in C++ and I don’t know shit about that syntax. Idk if it was legal, but I have two monitors and used a cheat sheet for the JavaScript and C++ one.

I think with your experience, you’ll probably do fine unless you get anxiety from the clock ticking down.

But competition would force these middlemen to make their services better, lower prices, etc. This whole comment doesn’t get to the heart of this matter, regardless whether ticket master is a scapegoat, the ticket selling industry would be better off if there was more competition.

Also, isn’t it still wrong of companies like ticket master to bully artists with their top-down control of venues and promoting?

Pandantic OP ,
@Pandantic@midwest.social avatar

Your comment is confusing me.

While I agree that Ticketmaster is a fucked up monopoly,

Implies that what you’re going to say next is something that either excuses them or is worse than them, but you go on to say:

the only one fucked were those buying tickets.

Which, imo, is true but does not follow the logic of the “while” statement.

Then you go on to say:

Taylor will easily survive another day; those that sold their pancreases for a seat…not so much

Which makes me think you are blaming Taylor Swift for Ticketmaster’s prices, or at least saying that she is complacent in some way. But the point is the prices were set by Ticketmaster, and padded with exorbitant fees that Taylor had no control over.

The ad shows headlines related to Eric Garner, who died after police held him in a chokehold. Police initially confronted Garner for allegedly selling cigarettes illegally.

For real? Using a police brutality tragedy of a POC that is tangentially related to cigarettes to push something you don’t actually give a fuck either way about just to make Biden look bad? I hope voters see right through this as the same disingenuous, cultural war bullshit that republicans always pull because they can’t win on real issues.

Also, I’m no Biden fan, but I hate Big Tobacco even more, so I hope this goes through, and I hope they go after vapes directly marketing to children next. Menthol is all about making it easier to avoid noticing the direct effects of smoking on their body. A company making something dangerous should not be allowed to do that. You want to do it on your own, go ahead! But for a manufacturer, who has a history of shady dealings regarding downplaying the health risks of their products, this should be seen as another example of that. Speaking of shady dealings, I would be shocked if Big Tobacco did not have a direct hand in this ad campaign.
