Hey.

I’m Dan. A 35 year old father of two who doesn’t have nearly as much time as he needs to do half the things he wishes he had the time to do.

How are you finding it?

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I've been using a service called Hardcover after switching over from StoryGraph last year. I've been searching for a 'letterboxd for books' for years and I think this is the closest I've found so far.

I'm laaaaazy as sin when I've finally got the kids to bed so I usually hold it in my right hand and then operate the thing by pressing the buttons with the same hand. If I have to move my left for anything other than moving my drink to my mouth I consider this a loss.

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I'll be honest with you, up until this comment I thought it was fictional.

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Are you wanting fiction or nonfiction??

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Not entirely related but I've read some books on the Franklin expedition and found them fascinating so I'll definitely take a look.

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Sorry, but what's a beta-read?

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Animal Farm is one of my favourites. I'm really into Politics, and AF presents it in a fairly straightforward, yet utterly captivating way. It's also pretty short so I can get through it in like two or three sessions.

I read 1984 like 15 years ago, during a time when...well frankly I was an idiot teenager who knew nothing of the world. I should go back to that at some point.

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Credit where it's due, I can't handle more than one book at a time.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I've got a Kobo Libra2.

Pretty happy with the build quality and screen. Less happy with the walled garden approach that Kobo seem to be operating.

That'll probably be something I take into account when I come to get my next model.

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Yes I'd prefer to stay away from the news side of the industry because I can find that stuff to be exhausting at times.

Ideally LTAG will flourish into a place to talk about what you're playing, dissect the latest video from your favourite content creator or post some really cool art from an old magazine you've just found in the loft.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Yup.

Played some Solar Ash at the tail end of 2023 and it didn't land at all well with me. Very excited for HLB.

Can't speak to the hardware question but the game itself is definitely worth playing, especially with headphones.

It's one of the few games that I think everyone should experience at least a little of. The puzzles can be a little meh, and the combat is fiiiiiiine, but where the game really shines is in its atmosphere, world design and use of FMV and audio to really sell it's story and put you inside the protagonist head.

No one has any idea what they’re doing.

I’m 35. I’ve got two kids. I make it up as I go along. There’s no plan, no blueprint. There’s just the day to day crap that life has for us all. I wake up, I go to work and my only real aim is to get home to my kids and partner.

how do you even use twitter?

I’m not actually using twitter, just never got into it, but now that I’m trying out mastodon, idk if I’m just too old now but I don’t… get it. I just can’t seem to engage with anyone, the UI seems confusing and counterintuitive, I don’t seem to have the context to get into this type of website, can someone tell me...

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

With regards to Mastodon, there’s no algorithm. So you’ll need to be using the hashtag search function to really find the sort of people you’re interested in communicating with.

@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I played that just after the birth of my second child and it quickly became one of my absolute favourite games of all time.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Bloodborne, Sifu or Hyper Light Drifter.

I don’t really want to pick between the three, but I’ll go with Sifu, because it’s got a little of that super tough, Fromsoftiness built in.

Runs like a dream on my Steamdeck too, and has some genuinely really impressive moments of beauty that I wasn’t expecting from a super-hard-beat-people-up-with-a-pipe game.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Same. I ended up playing it on my partner’s PS5, and it ran well enough (30FPS be damned). Put that on my Steamdeck though, please.

The thing I’m giving to this post instead of giving to the growing pile of laundry I need to do.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I wish I had the time for a redux. The early game is absolutely fantastic, but I’ve got such a limited time to play I don’t think I could really commit to it.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Well firstly, any new staff inevitably ask the ‘do we work an hour more/less’ depending on the circumstance.

Aside from that, not much else changes. One Sunday morning I’d finish at 6 and then six months later I’d have a Sunday where I finished at 8.

Fortunately I never worked Sunday nights, so I never felt like I was losing much after work time.

Can't edit the nsfw status of a post? Or am I blind?

Somehow accidentally marked a post as NSFW when I submitted it. Tried to edit the post to unmark it as NSFW, and saw there was no way to do it. I was about to delete and repost, when I noticed the “open in browser” option, did that, and realized I could edit it that to unmark the NSFW tag. Is this an oversight? A planned...

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Not sure if it’s along similar lines but iirc you can’t currently edit posts that have images in them. Could be the same issue?

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

If I genuinely absolutely adore a book that I’ve read digitally I’ll usually go in for the paperback. And, this might be the snob in me, but I’m more likely to make that purchase if it’s a nonfiction book.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I think that technically we have two ‘moons’ already. Just that the other one is super small and doesn’t really have much effect on the planet.

Sorry that this didn’t answer your question, and feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Thanks for the heads-up. It would appear I was wrong.

I think there’s a big difference between a mental institution and a therapist. Almost apples and oranges.

Is there any way I can stop seeing sports posts?

I don’t know if this was asked before and I don’t know how to look for that so I’m sorry if this is a repeat but, I keep seeing American football posts which I couldn’t care less about and I keep blocking the communities but they’re like thousands of millions of communities that never end. And no, I don’t wanna stick...

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I’m a big sports guy and I rarely see random sports posts in the wild. Could OP be viewing the “all” page maybe? We had a similar issue a few days ago with Elon Posts and I wonder if it’s not a similar issue here?

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I’ve seen Elden Ring on PC for as low as £30 over the last few weeks if that takes your fancy. I’m also fairly sure it’s on sale on PSN and Xbox ATM (at least in the UK).

Wo-Long maybe? It’s from the folks that made Nioh and is on Gamepass.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I tried to get into Mortal Shell twice now and both times I’ve ran away screaming. I hear great things about it, but I find the character feel so cumbersome from the outset that I just give up after an hour or two.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I’m probably going to play Lords when it’s cheaper. I’ve just finished Lies of P and I’m working my way through Dark Souls Remastered, and with Spider-Man and that new Mario game, I’m officially maxed out with regards to game time.

Really scary 2D horror games?

I am fascinated by games with 2D art that still manage to give you a good scare. I guess what I find interesting is if a game can manage to translate the scares and audio design which we know from 3D environments and movies. I have never really played any though. I would love to hear some suggestions, especially with Halloween...

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Oxenfree messed me up when I played it a few years ago. It’s got this super eerie vibe to it that really ratchets up the tension and sense of dread.

A game I played recently might do the job too, it’s called Signalis. It plays a bit like a 2D Resident Evil game, but with a slightly more interesting story.

I don’t think I’ve encountered one Musk based post in the three months I’ve been on here. Maybe it’s the communities you’re subscribed to?
