Copilot / Recall was the last straw for me. My only relationship with Microsoft for the last 10 years has been, "how much more of Microsoft's sh*t am I willing to put up with?"

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

Yup. Gaming was one of the few things that kept me from switching to Linux. Then, I found out about Proton on Steam.

Microsoft has gone too far: including a Game Pass ad in the Settings app ushers in a whole new age of ridiculous over-advertising ( www.techradar.com )

Windows 11 is getting out of hand with its push for advertisments, frankly - remember the recent full-screen pop-up to persuade users to install Edge or other Microsoft services? Then another advertisment was placed in the Start menu, and now Microsoft has finally worn my temper thin - with a new Game Pass ad coming to the...

You can get laptops on Amazon now with Ubuntu pre-installed. :)

I got the "It's time to upgrade to Windows 11" message on my Windows 10 laptop. It's getting aggravating.

"Free ad-supported" makes you no different than a hundred other garbage-tier streaming services.

Yup, the fine needs to be much higher. People could have died because of this.

The entire point of fines is that they're punitive. They're supposed to HURT. To make you change your behavior and not do the Bad Thing again.

If fines don't even make a dent in your daily profits, then laws become nothing more than suggestions. They become just a cost of doing business.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

Yup. With VOIP, you can spoof any phone number. If this technology were fixed, 99% of spam calls would disappear, and Caller ID would be worth something again. Our government is either too lazy or bought-off to fix this problem.

They DID enact the national Do Not Call list and created heavy fines for people who violate that list, while knowing full well that they couldn't catch the spammers in the first place (because of VOIP spoofing).

This is probably connected to China cloning the entire GitHub website to their own servers.

Whoever is downvoting this needs to have an encounter with the U.S. legal system, so they find out how little their precious freaking "rights" are worth.

I finally switched to Linux Mint a few weeks ago. CoPilot/ Recall was the last straw.

It will definitely be decentralized. The biggest blows to real representative democracy happened when the courts made the "corporations are people / money is speech" arguments.

Microsoft Account to local account conversion guide erased from official Windows 11 guide — instructions redacted earlier this week ( www.tomshardware.com )

Microsoft has been pushing hard for its users to sign into Windows with a Microsoft Account. The newest Windows 11 installer removed the easy bypass to the requirement that you make an account or login with your existing account. If you didn't install Windows 11 without a Microsoft Account and now want to stop sending the...

Now ask yourself if there's any real, physical proof that Zeus, Thor or Anakin Skywalker ever existed.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

Copilot is going to want 50 gigs on YOUR computer's hard drive to store snapshots. MS also wants you to buy dedicated AI hardware to run a few of their apps. They're going to steal your computer's storage and processing resources to create a worldwide AI and surveillance network.

No thanks. I finally switched to Linux. Microsoft can become Skynet without my help.

The Russian enterprise should not seek customer support from the manufacturer directly: “You will simply compromise the legitimacy of our legal entity, which presents itself as an organization not connected to the Russian Federation in any way.”

Lol. The "legal entity" is literally telling you, "don't compromise our 'legitimacy' in this illegal as f*ck transaction."

There are a lot of books that are out of print, especially reference books. And if you look for them on Amazon or eBay, they've been snapped up by scalpers who are reselling them for obscene profit.

Either make the books available for sale or quit complaining about "copyright infringement." But whatever you do, quit hoarding knowledge like a dragon sitting on a pile of gold.

Each conversation lasted a total of five minutes. According to the paper, which was published in May, the participants judged GPT-4 to be human a shocking 54 percent of the time. Because of this, the researchers claim that the large language model has indeed passed the Turing test.

That's no better than flipping a coin and we have no idea what the questions were. This is clickbait.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

The whole point of the Turing test, is that you should be unable to tell if you're interacting with a human or a machine. Not 54% of the time. Not 60% of the time. 100% of the time. Consistently.

They're changing the conditions of the Turing test to promote an AI model that would get an "F" on any school test.

HP bricks ProBook laptops with bad BIOS delivered via automatic updates — many users face black screen after Windows pushes new firmware ( www.tomshardware.com )

On May 26, a user on HP's support forums reported that a forced, automatic BIOS update had bricked their HP ProBook 455 G7 into an unusable state. Subsequently, other users have joined the thread to sound off about experiencing the same issue....

NutWrench ,

Microsoft has no business forcing firmware updates on anything. This is something HP should have handled. Those laptops are THEIR products, not Microsoft's.

How do you "fix" the security issues of a program that is literally designed to spy on you?

I've just switched to Linux Mint and I'm not ever coming back. That's how I "fixed it."

A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back ( www.windowscentral.com )

It's a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...

I finally switched to Linux Mint a week ago. I've just had enough of Microsoft and I couldn't think of any more reasons why I shouldn't switch.

I've got Libre Office for all my productivity needs. All my Steam games work under Linux. My VPN works just fine. Firefox for web browsing. Thunderbird for email. And Wine to run those 1-2 Windows programs that I just can't do without.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

The switch to Linux will have to come from the bottom up. Corporations will NOT switch until Microsoft costs them serious money.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

Microsoft lost my trust a long time ago. For the last 10-15 years, my only relationship with them is, "how much sh*t am I willing to put up with before I switch to something else?"

And CoPilot/Recall was the breaking point.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

This. "Embrace. Extend. Extinguish." has been Microsoft's mantra for a long time, now. Folks need to recognize the signs that their favorite things are being targeted before they get ruined.

Imagine the balls it takes to take user-created forum names and register them as trademarks.

NutWrench ,

Microsoft's goal has always been to turn your PC into a locked-down console, loaded with their spyware and rent-ware. I'm surprised they've allowed 3rd party software on our PCs for this long.

NutWrench ,

Here's the sooper-secret search result algorithm for whatever you type into Google:

YouTube results, followed by Reddit results, followed by "Sponsored" results, followed by AI-written Bot results, then a couple pages of Amazon results and finally, on page 10 or so, a ten-year-old result that's probably no longer relevant.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

I can't think of a single reason why I would need detailed snapshots of everything I did with my own computer.

But I can think of plenty of reasons why corporations, advertisers and governments would want that.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

I think the problem with big companies like Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda, etc is that once all the smart & creative people have gone, all you have left are the "line must always go up" business idiots, who have no idea what their company does or how to fix it.

CoPilot is exactly the kind of End-stage, "let's screw our customers to death" idea the CEOs come up with right before their company implodes.

The reason I know that's true is because when this stupid idea for CoPilot came up, there were no smart people who immediately said, "do you have any idea what a terrible f*cking plan this is?"

You know, The Infinite Monkey Theorem states that if you chain a room full of monkeys to typewriters and let them all beat the keys at random, for an infinite amount of time, they will . . . eventually . . . through sheer random chance . . . produce the comple works of William Shakespeare. Maybe in 10 trillion years or so. THIS is current state of "AI."

What Musk is proposing is like building an army of very expensive, very wasteful fusion-powered robots to beat the monkeys in the hope that the monkeys will work just a little bit faster.

Sounds like Google wants to get out of the search engine business. Maybe we should help them. Try DuckDuckGo. Or SearX

It looks like Windows 10 is going to be my last Windows operating system. Thanks to Microsoft.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

I've been trying out SearX and I'm really starting to like it. It reminds me of early Internet search results before Google started added crap to theirs. There's currently 82 Instances to choose from, here

https://searx.space/

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

They also highlight the fact that Google’s AI is not a magical fountain of new knowledge, it is reassembled content from things humans posted in the past indiscriminately scraped from the internet and (sometimes) remixed to look like something plausibly new and “intelligent.”

This. "AI" isn't coming up with new information on its own. The current state of "AI" is a drooling moron, plagiarizing any random scrap of information it sees in a desperate attempt to seem smart. The people promoting AI are scammers.

It's an old desktop that doesn't even support Windows 11 hardware requirements. I built it back in 2009, so Windows 10 will be its last Windows OS. I don't want to dual-boot now and then have to upgrade and transfer everything in a couple of years.
