Nemo ,

Kinda? I decided to avoid political-discussion communities, but if politics comes up in anither community I might offer an opinion.

What are some free interests/things/hobbies you can do in the city?

I live alone and I'm just wasting away my time here. It's actually making me very depressed to be honest. I do live in the city which makes think there ought to be at least something to do out here. Though I can't really afford to spent money on it every day....

Nemo ,

Mix it up by walking to local landmarks and public art.

Nemo ,

I loved spiders, except for brown recluses. Not because they're venomous, but because of the way they look, like those old tan M&Ms but with a slick sheen.

Nemo ,

Well, it does more-or-less happen on its own if you aren't paying attention.

Nemo ,

Lemmy isn't unified. Each instance will have their own policies.

Well, she definitely wrote "Celebrity Skin" about herself, so at least one.

How should I change my polite behavior to be more accommodating?

My parents raised me to always say "yes sir" and "no ma'am", and I automatically say it to service workers and just about anyone with whom I'm not close that I interact with. I noticed recently that I had misgendered a cashier when saying something like "no thank you, ma'am" based on their appearing AFAB, but on a future visit...

Nemo ,

I see a lot of unhelpful comments so far, so just let me say that I get where you're coming from and am also seeking a good option.

In informal situations, I use "cousin" or "neighbor"; at work with patrons I use "sir" or "miss" if I think I can guess the gender and "my friend" if I'm unsure. ("Miss" instead of "ma'am" or "madam" because apparently Easterners have a weird age connotation with those terms that I honestly don't fully understand.) I also use "friends" for a mixed group. But I've got nothing for a formal situation such as addressing a stranger on the street.

For those telling OP –and by extension, my Midwestern self– that just saying "excuse me" or "thank you" is fine... respectfully, no. That doesn't address the person. I get that manners vary by region, but it doesn't help us to be polite in an ungendered way in the regions we are.

Nemo ,

worth developing a new way of showing respect that can feel equally authentic

That's the whole point if this post, trying to find a new (to me) and authentic way of recognizing others without connotations of gender (and since you cogently brought it up, age).

Nemo ,

unearned respect

I suspect this here is where the break is. I don't think respect needs to be earned, I think all humans, all creatures, all things are worthy of respect by default. Sure, you can lose respect, but the default interaction with a stranger should be a respectful one.

Nemo ,

ma’am being for “older” women

Where I grew up, that's not the case. Ma'am or madam is for any adult woman, and often for kids you are treating like adults.

I know it's different on the East Coast, but I still feel silly calling a grown woman "miss".

Nemo ,

"A triple triple" would be "triple, triple, triple".

"Triple triple" without a preceding article is ambiguous and could be lots of things.

"Triple triple triple" could similarly be lots of things.

Punctuation is important.

Nemo ,

I thought you meant when the fruit juice is hot, eg. mulled cider

My career is fulfilling. My current employer is trying to make sure this specific job is not.

Is it possible to teach without a degree in the field your want to teach?

I think that teaching classes would be interesting. I have a lot of industry experience, but I never actually got a degree in the field I work in, and I don't have any sort of degree that deals with teaching. Is it possible to get a job as a teacher without those?...

Nemo ,

I used to teach CS to middle schoolers at a private school. Illinois doesn't require a bachelor's for teachers at private schools as long as the teacher has "demonstrated competence". I taught there part-time for twelve years and then full time for a year.

How do you like to approach writing about games?

I've noticed there are some folks writing at length here on their experiences playing games, so this felt like a good place to ask. Do you take notes as you play, and/or after each session, then write out full thoughts upon completing a game?

Or are your reflections compiled only after finishing a game, no notes?

I've dabbled with different approaches, and haven't really settled on a consistent process personally.

@patientgamers

Nemo ,

For me, it's usually a series of reflections throughout my plsytime, no notes, rather than one big reflection at the end.

Nemo ,

Here in Chicago I patronize the Logan for domestic releases and Music Box for international stuff.

But I'm not here to talk about those. I'm here to talk about the Empire 6 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. When I was young, it was a normal mall cinema, they sold concessions, you saw new releases, there was an arcade across the way.

But then the mall started dying. The Empire 6 couldn't compete with the big new multiplex in town, either, so they either had to close or do something different; they stopped showing expensive new releases and started showing cheaper films. They had a classic movie night. They did second runs of popular films. They showed indie films; before My Big Fat Greek Wedding was a hit, I saw it at the Empire 6. You could rent it for private screenings. And tickets were half the price of the other cinemas in town.

And that was great, and I have lots of fond memories. But. This one time, a local hip-hop group collaborated with some local skaters and a filmmaker to make this forty-minute montage of tricks and lines around town set to the group's music. Everyone involved was under twenty-five. And they somehow convinced the Empire 6 to host the premier screening.

This was in the early aughts, in South Dakota. Weed was not legal, but the theatre was full of smoke. Drinking, too, and as for sneaking in snacks... it was chaos. Beautiful chaos. We laughed! We cheered! We we there, the whole scene, as a fucking community, legitimized in a way I've never really felt before or since by the fact that a real-ass cinema was showing this movie about local guys busting their kneecaps at local spots to local jams.

The Empire 6 was a local theatre that day, not just another business.

The mall kept dying, as all malls did, with the movie theatre being one of the last shops to hold out. I went to college, and stopped coming home summers after a couple years. Eventually it wasn't home anymore, anyway. But for one wild afternoon, the Empire 6 was the best place to be in the whole known world.

Decorative open space is important for making cities livable but uh... lawns ain't it.

Nemo ,

Really depends what you mean by "memes".

Nemo ,

So, like, any self-propogating idea, you don't like it?

Congrats on your unique brain architecture, I guess. When the rest of us are destroyed by parasitic thought-worms, you'll be there to continue the human race...

Nemo ,

A lot of independent musical artists have hours of B-sides, covers, and livestreams you get access to whenever you donate.

Nemo ,

Grill them. Seriously.

Nemo ,

Yes! You can put them facedown while you're roasting a chicken in the pan, for example.

Nemo ,

After I walk the kids to school I just keep walking. Sometimes it's ten minutes, sometimes it's an hour. I come home with a clear head and ready to be productive.

What happened to all the baddies you knew growing up?

I don't know if this is something people say in other countries, but in my country, there's this common cliché or "wisdom" where adults will assure you that the people who picked on you in environments like school will universally develop lives of hardship later on, one way or another getting into mayhem....

Nemo ,

Definitely thought this was going to be about the other kind of baddies, in which case the answer is generally "they're married, with kids".

Nemo ,

I did in the 90's, but only when the library didn't have paper copies.

My grandma liked to listen to John Grisham novels on tape in her car; she drove a lot for work.

Nemo ,

The seats are assigned, the baggage compartments are self-serve.

Nemo ,

They probably have oral histories about them, as most cultures did before developing or adopting astronomy.

Nemo ,

Wait, are the rest of you feeling accomplished after finishing tasks?

Nemo ,

Nah, criticizing mods shouldn't be penalized.

Nemo ,

College campuses are like buffets for bike thieves. Outside of that, most bike theft is a crime of opportunity, and just being locked better than the bikes next to it is enough. But on campus (and other places with heavy use, like outside museums), lock both wheels to the frame and the frame to a rack, and lock the seat, too.

Never lock your bike to street signs if you can help it. They're easy to disassemble. Use a proper rack.

Swap out any "quick release" mechanisms for the kind that use tools.

Nemo ,

Enh, I dunno. I don't have a diagnosis and maybe I don't have ADHD. But a lot of the behavioral hacks people share here have been helpful to me, and it's nice to see other people struggling, and succeeding, against the same problems I face.

Nemo Mod ,

See if your local cycling groups do a commuter "bike bus" as well. There's one in Chicago that's become very popular.
