Custom default settings, speed, and reliability (not IP blacklisted)

Lemongrab ,

I don't fetch from google. Also a VPN does wonders for that.

Lemongrab ,

It looks clean, maybe not very original but better than a early 2000s looking-ass website

Lemongrab ,

This is true

Why is Matrix mentioned more often than XMPP in self hosted forums?

I'm looking into hosting one of these for the first time. From my limited research, XMPP seems to win in every way, which makes me think I must be missing something. Matrix is almost always mentioned as the de-facto standard, but I rarely saw arguments why it is better than XMPP?...

If the goal is to make a similar experience to discord, we should make a desktop/android client which changes the way the info is shown. I boil down discords main features this: 1-to-1 call/text, modern messenger features (emojis, text, audio, video, link embeds), servers with the option for channels and always on voice chats, group chats (weird overlap with servers). Always on voice chats should be as simple as disabling notifying or dialing members. Is it not just that simple to get a heavily reduced version of discord? Maybe noisetorch for noise cancelation.

Lemongrab ,

Or just use lockdown mode in android to force phone to only unlock with password

Lemongrab ,

Its temporary. Just something you can quickly switch on in case of an interaction.

Lemongrab ,

To add to the question, what about using a selfhosted privacy frontend behind a VPN. Does this shrink the need for a crowd.

Lemongrab ,

Like hosting it from a local server that routes all internet traffic through the VPN to avoid exposing the source of the server's IP to the unprivate service.

Lemongrab ,

Here is a breakdown of why it is much better (near to the bottom): https://divestos.org/pages/browsers
TLDR: Webview browsers are bad for privacy.

Lemongrab ,

Encryption doesn't mean perfectly hidden. Metadata isn't encrypted for HTTPS iirc. And the ISP knows who your sending traffic to since they are routing you there and are usually your DNS. When connected to a good and trusted VPN, all that is hidden, your DNS can't give away your location, and the only server you contact is the VPN

Lemongrab ,

That is just as true of your ISP, who when raided by the police will happily send it all over in a jiffy.

Lemongrab ,

It doesn't matter if they are encrypted if you can sell the data about what the user is doing (eg if your connecting to a shopping website your probably shopping their). Better to obfuscate the source by choosing an endpoint that isn't geographically related and associated with your identity. I only would ever recommend using a VPN that is open source and well audited by a renowned 3rd party auditor(s). https://luxsci.com/blog/what-is-really-protected-by-ssl-and-tls.html

Use LibRedirect or Redirector to auto-redirect to RedLib public instances.

Anyone know exactly what info Youtube captures from you from its browser version (and by what means)?

I know the prevailing sentiment for a long time in the privacy community has been "DAE Youtube bad?" though I have always thought that it is kinda overblown. Besides, I am using Firefox which is supposed to isolate tabs so they can't speak to each other, so I felt a small amount safer using Youtube....

Lemongrab ,

Or isolate discord with a tab container in Firefox. Invidious is still preferable though.

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you'd love alternatives for?

Looking for the Perfect USB Flash Drive

I've been using some cheap flash drives for things like installing OSs and the like, but now I've picked up a Dell Wyse 3040 system to play with which only has 8gb of storage. So I'm installing the OS onto a flash drive permanently (don't worry, just for messing with, nothing of value will be lost if/when the drive craps out)....

Comments no longer visible with youtube frontends?

Are comments no longer visible for anyone else using the youtube frontends? I can no longer see comments with either invidious, piped, or viewtube, and I've tried several instances of each. With invidious there's just nothing there below the video description. With viewtube I get an error message. And with piped I see...

Lemongrab ,

Still works on Clipious in my experience. Clipious is invidious on mobile and has a clean UI.

Lemongrab ,

Changes like contributions to your repo? Or changes like people can fork and modify the source code themselves?

I'm looking for a task time tracking app (android, and/or desktop Linux)

I'm trying to keep a log of the time that I spend doing specific tasks throughout the day. Currently, the way that I am doing this is by constantly running a stopwatch and filling out a spreadsheet for the day — when a task is completed, I lap the stopwatch and add the task and the time spent on that task in a row in the...

Lemongrab ,

I think you are looking for Simple Time Tracker: https://f-droid.org/packages/com.razeeman.util.simpletimetracker/

Lemongrab ,

Np, I'm glad my random app testing has paid off. Has a nice UI as well which is rare in FOSS.

Lemongrab ,

What did Thorium add? Where can I find out more.

Lemongrab ,

Oh that. Haha. Harmless but weird nonetheless to be in the source.

Lemongrab ,

Syncthing-fork which fixes battery drain issue and others as well. I'll just leave this here for your battery needs: https://f-droid.org/packages/com.github.catfriend1.syncthingandroid/

Lemongrab ,

Super expensive. Better to just burn it in low income communities. /s

Lemongrab ,

Idk about excellent. I hear there is a lot of emotional abuse of student from teachers. Requiring conformity and strict long schedules. I've had a couple Chinese friends and it seems like school is quite intense over there.

Linux distro for selfhosting server

So I have been running a fair amount of selfhosted services over the last decade or so. I have always been running this on a Ubuntu LTS distribution running on a intel NUC machine. Most, if not all of my services run in a docker container, and using a docker compose file that brings everything up. The server is headless. I...

I want to bring some attention to Slidge XMPP Bridges ( git.sr.ht )

It seems like an awesome project that fulfills a lot of the requirements for bridging many popular messaging platforms (like FB messenger, WhatsApp, discord, signal, and more). I wanted to share because I know a lot of us have friends and family who still use antiquated/proprietary communication platforms. Fair warning, I have...

Lemongrab OP ,

I looked it up but it doesn't seem to have support for many messengers.

Lemongrab OP ,

Understandable. I have to agree (though I have no experience to back it up)

Lemongrab ,

rhasspy's Piper tts is a good engine and has some good models for English and Spanish. Integrated into some apps but isn't difficult to code into an app.

Advice on cleaning bloatware off of a new PC ( www.bestbuy.com )

I helped my 77 year old mother purchase a new laptop, and I want to be sure to get all the bloatware off of it, and set her up with with some better privacy options. I am aMac guy at home so I haven't done this kind of thing for many years. (I use Windows at work, so I'm quite familiar and capable, but obviously I have to rely...

Lemongrab ,

Linux Mint is good for beginners. If Windows is a necessity, use the Chris Titus WinUtil script to configure and remove bloat.

Lemongrab ,

Ungoogled chromium need to be hardened since its goal is to be a drop-in replacement of chromium without google.

Lemongrab ,

Are the folders named to websites? Or maybe there associations are recorded in a way that you could script batch rename? Not a great solution but possible maybe.

Copilot misses the question, elaborates on topic I was speaking aloud instead. ( lemmy.world )

Was using my SO's laptop, I had been talking (not searching, or otherwise typing) about some VPN solutions for my homelab, and had the curiosity to use the new big copilot button and ask what it can do. The beginning of this context was actually me asking if it can turn off my computer for me (it cannot) and I ask this....

Lemongrab ,

If its anything like Cortana's permission it'll have access to all your web searches. Cortana also had speech and typing personalization, so Microsoft is definitely giving copilot at least those permissions.

Firefox alternatives

I'm thinking of switching to some Firefox alternative, but there are too many. So far, I'm thinking of Floorp, Waterfox or LibreWolf, but it is hard to decide on one specifically. Is there are suggestion in terms of privacy, security, maintanability, etc?

cc @technology

Lemongrab ,

^For security hardened firefox. Mostly unnoticeable.

Lemongrab ,

See if the software is compatible with Wine, a compatiblity layer for Windows software to run on Linux.

Lemongrab ,

Does this force dark mode on pages or just what. I couldn't get it to work anywhere close to chomiums force dark mode.
