I'm born in 1992 so this game is a bit before my time. I started playing it and got completely hooked. It's an absolutely fantastic game that would still hold up as a quality indie game today....
Chrono Trigger has all the elements done right- 10/10 music, 10/10 art style, RPG and battle systems that were innovative for the time and are still fun to play today.
But I think what sets the game apart as a timeless classic, a masterpiece, is its deep themes of existentialism. Marle has has a fake persona and a mistaken identity, yet we can still see her real self. Crono, as an avatar for the player, is sentenced to death and spared in the last moments. Robo, after being freed from his original programming, asks "Is this what it is like... to die?"
And that's all just in the first act.
The ideas of Sartre, of Nietzsche, and perhaps most of all "Being and Time" by Heidegger were presented in a way that my 10-year-old self could comprehend and enjoy. But it's not dumbed down for children, my 30-year-old self can still find deep meaning in the narrative and themes.
By "surprise" I assume you mean a capital-friendly, poorly implemented solution that does not solve the underlying problem. All of your examples illustrate this.
The first black president was a war criminal who enacted a right wing agenda.
Gay marriage is likely to be overturned by our billionaire-owned, unaccountable Supreme Court.
Legal marijuana is a patchwork- the best states have inefficient and nonsensical cannabis regulations, and the worst states still have inhumane, draconian punishment.
Despite the small amount of forgiveness, the total amount of student loans owed is rising. Currently we are at a record high of $1.75 trillion in debt.
And as for universal healthcare, the number of uninsured and underinsured keeps rising. The number of deaths due to lack of access keeps rising. And there are many people, like myself, who have had their lives destroyed by medical bankruptcy. The entire system is designed to maximize profit, patient health is a secondary concern.
The Biden administration’s report on whether Israel has violated U.S. and international humanitarian law during the war in Gaza has been delayed and will no longer be released Wednesday as planned, three Senate aides and a House aide told POLITICO....
The oft-repeated idea that Iran supplies the majority of Hamas weapons is also poorly sourced. It is usually attributed to the CIA's World Factbook or former US generals who now are talking heads for think tanks. These sources are highly biased.
But one thing that has been well documented is the Hamas unexploded ordinance team. They have over a decade of experience disarming and retrieving Israeli bombs from Gazan homes and businesses.
Sorry I didn't want to write an essay, but you're right, I should have provided more.
I think it's obvious the Medium article is poorly sourced- there are no links, no quotes, and no attribution whatsoever. Compare it to a write up like Hamas Recycling Unexploded Ordinance in Gaza, which tells the exact same story but it comes with links and quotes, and it names the source as Michael Cardash, the former deputy head of the Israeli National Police Bomb Disposal Division.
As for the Iranian connection, I know I'm going against popular opinion, but I made my claims clear and anyone can try to disprove me.
A quick Google search shows many articles on the bomb disposal unit and tactics inside Gaza dating back to at least 2012. The Inevitable Rearmament of Hamas (2021) gives a good analysis. An even better source for this is the al-Qassam Brigade's youtube, they post raw war footage including bomb disposal. Unfortunately I dont speak Arabic so I wasnt able to find a specific video.
Outright corruption? Business interests have always ruled the country, this is not new.
The bigger picture is that America is the most violent country since Nazi Germany. No other country comes close to our death toll. We spend $1trillion each year on violence and weapons- and those bombs must be dropped, because we need a reason to spend >$1trillion next year.
A huge round of layoffs as he pushes for a $56 billion dollar pay package is no surprise.
Theres this conflict of interest when a person only gets paid in giant stock options. His job isn't to make cars or manage a profitable business, his job is stock market manipulation.
And the pro-business, deregulatory financial hellscape we all inhabit makes his job very easy.
