It didn't just die, it straight up was acquired by the Russians (presumably to suppress the public) and then gutted. Uh oh indeed.

We are truly living the Days of Internet Services Past.

I used mIRC for years, but as the days have marched on, XChat replaced it, and then irssi, and finally weechat on SSH.

McDonald’s Gives Up On ‘AI’ After Comedy Of Errors, Including Putting Bacon On Ice Cream ( www.techdirt.com )

LLMs certainly hold potential, but as we’ve seen time and time again in tech over the last fifteen years, the hype and greed of unethical pitchmen has gotten way out ahead of the actual locomotive. A lot of people in “tech” are interested in money, not tech. And they’re increasingly making decisions based on how to drum...

1.1.1.1/cloudflared responds crazy fast compared to anything else i've used. I really just wanted off Google (and before them OpenDNS). That's about it.

I already use pihole, but with cloudflared as the upstream. What benefits does unbound offer besides improved security?

I think a lot of dating sites are using bots or other means to push engagement at this point since online dating for women can be summed up like this:

Even Apple finally admits that 8GB RAM isn't enough ( www.xda-developers.com )

There were a number of exciting announcements from Apple at WWDC 2024, from macOS Sequoia to Apple Intelligence. However, a subtle addition to Xcode 16 — the development environment for Apple platforms, like iOS and macOS — is a feature called Predictive Code Completion. Unfortunately, if you bought into Apple's claim that...

They moved to on-die RAM for a reason: To nickel and dime yo ass.

I needed to expense a Mac Mini for iOS development, and everyone (Me, the company, our purchasing department) was baffled at how much it cost to get 16 GB. And they only go up to 24GB. Imagine how much they'll charge for 32 in a year!

Do I have trust issues when I have to ask where the AI is gonna store our conversations, dick measurements, fetishes, turn-ons, times I start crying during copulation, times I stop crying during copulation, desires in life, and preferred types of lingerie; or are there legitimate infosec considerations?

I Will Fucking Piledrive You If You Mention AI Again — Ludicity ( ludic.mataroa.blog )

How stupid do you have to be to believe that only 8% of companies have seen failed AI projects? We can't manage this consistently with CRUD apps and people think that this number isn't laughable? Some companies have seen benefits during the LLM craze, but not 92% of them. 34% of companies report that generative AI specifically...

Hacker News was silencing this article outright. That's typically a sign that its factual enough to strike a nerve with the potential CxO libertarian [slur removed] crowd.

If this is satire, I don't see it. Because i've seen enough of the GenAI crowd openly undermine society/the environment/the culture and be brazen about it; violence is a perfectly normal response.

Adobe kinda burned up any good will it had with...all the shit they pullin'.

I have no issue trusting someone at their word, but not when they spent their trust capital elsewhere. Adobe doesn't have any, because their reputation for decades now has been asinine pricing, M&As, and whatever crap they tried to do with Mixamo before someone told them to stop.

You know what I think is funny? The NFL doesn't have any footage of Super Bowl 1, the only known tape of the game is held by a private collector, but he can't watch it due to the NFL copyright. So its sitting in an Iron Mountain facility in the Poconos. And its deteriorating.

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information ( futurism.com )

You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...

There used to be this music festival in my college town and they liked to charge absurd money for "tokens" to use at the vendors. I didn't use all of them but I found they worked in the parking meters (I think they detected as slugs, because they immediately gave me an hour and flashed the meter) but nobody in the city bothered to ticket me for it. I dunno, I felt kinda bad but at the same time, I don't like to parallel park.

For what its worth, I paid more for the tokens than I ever did parking.

I've been playing it and I feel like its not quite the 80/100 I expected. Its probably closer to a 70/100 to me. Which isn't bad, its just not reaching the highs Cataclysm/Emergence did. Its better than HW2, which had a pretty lazy heroes journey bs story. That's not an accomplishment though.

The megalith combat is really great. Its more interesting than just deep space combat that the franchise is known for. The story teeters between compelling and boring. The ship designs are amazing, and the fact I can see the elements of Sajuuk present in the Incarnate is compelling worldbuilding.

I am outright confused why they are using CGI cutscenes over the drawn cutscenes Homeworld is known for. The combat feels pretty basic, its not as smart as HWR Players Patch. This was a problem with DOK as well. I fear it will share DOK's other problem: it stops being interesting the moment the campaign ends, and i'll never touch it again.

Homeworld 3 was never going to move numbers, i'm worried Gearbox set this up to fail. I really think this franchise should branch out beyond RTS and give us games to explore the universe that, at times, feels as huge as its ambitions. I'm reminded of a one-off Kiith from the Cata manual, where they lost everything on Kharak -- their family, their other Kiithid; so they stole a freighter and a crusade against the Taiidan Remnant became all they lived for. As the bodies were stacked, their Kiith grew once more. That would be a badass game to play, a space sim like Freelancer where I am taking out the trash.
