I install Nvidia drivers using NVCleanstall and leave GE uninstalled since I never really use it. Do driver updates that include game optimizations still apply?
These days most apps vaguely related to gaming have a DVR function, so that might not be a pressing thing to keep it for. Xbox game bar and soon Steam get that function.
Hopefully the rise of this feature doesn’t mean people accidentally have 8 DVRs running on their gameplay through various gaming apps (not to mention Windows’ Xbox Game Bar does this too)
I’d go one further: The movement can come across as whiney and impossible to please when it echoes the message in a super-blanket way in places it doesn’t make sense, like this one.
It’s like protesting government actions with “All government should be abolished so we can ALL BE FREE”.
My first thought was to abuse something that rhymes with "Mild Topography". But that would likely lead to legal repercussions for both you and Microsoft. A better solution would be to store hundreds of medical records in your Documents folder. You have a right to store your own medical information. If Microsoft is uploading those to their servers without your consent, and without appropriate HIPAA measures, that smells like an extremely silver-wrapped lawsuit.
Microsoft has been pushing hard for its users to sign into Windows with a Microsoft Account. The newest Windows 11 installer removed the easy bypass to the requirement that you make an account or login with your existing account. If you didn't install Windows 11 without a Microsoft Account and now want to stop sending the...
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help identifying an alleged bike thief who, on Wednesday, shoplifted bolt cutters to steal a boy’s e-bike.
Retail stores are likely studying the effect that shoplifting has on other customers though. When it’s brazen, it can make people fearful for their own safety, and even less likely to shop at the same place.
The thing is, if a game releases on Series X without any bonus bells and whistles like (pick one) 4K, 60fps, or ray tracing, it’s kind of failed the move to next gen. If it then cannot scale any of those things back for the Series S, then it’s failed at designing scalability.
The new consoles do not exist to serve programmer inefficiency.
Xbox has a packaged release system designed for that. Since the Series S isn't really meant to go over 1080p, developers are encouraged to only include smaller versions of textures since anything too detailed would be wasted.
PS5, by contrast, tends to have simplified video settings panels so gamers can prioritize what they want - be that raytracing, 4K, or 60fps. Often, just having the extra power doesn't necessarily matter if the game is coded against taking advantage of it. (I think Bloodborne is infamous for this - it hasn't gotten an update, so even on PS5, everyone must play it locked at 30fps).
Similar to how the PS5 had “8K” on the box; it’s only technically capable of that for the sake of videos, but most games tend to go a bit smaller resolution for practical rendering.
I mean...I think yes, at some point a marketing department made that claim, which is unfortunate because that's ultimately far from reality and most people know it. The claims made of the Series X and PS5 are also usually exaggerated, because most salespeople can get away with prefixing any claim with the words "up to".
What I want out of romance in games is to have it take you by surprise, which often means it’s not a “romance option”. Some of the best character scenes I’ve seen wrapped some other major plot point into the fact that one person cares a bit too deeply about another, and processes it all very suddenly.
So I’m fine with this removal. All those romance choices in RPGs like Fallout and Skyrim felt ultra shallow to me. Even BG3 just seems like raw wish fulfillment from a horny cast.
There’s a game with pre-rendered backgrounds called Alisa. I always really enjoyed the pre-render look. The excitement of reaching a “cinematic FMV” that moves the story in a PS1 game is very different from standard cutscenes.
My idea for it is a social network that heavily relies on webcam-recorded opinions and the occasional hand-written letter.
Yes, that's super high-friction and inconvenient. I'd argue social media has become so lazy, incorporating effort into it might improve the experience by changing the quality of posts you see.
Just to pose a thought; how practical would it be for a small subject owner to run a FediVerse instance intended to stay localized to their domain?
For example: Indie game owner makes a reasonably popular game, they set up a website that Lemmy users can subscribe/join directly, and use that for forums/tips/discussions related to their game. People don't need to register as long as they have an account somewhere. Some number of users would be new to Lemmy and use that site's registration for later discovery. And, someday when X instance (the game, or the next popular one) gets infested by neonazis, everyone just moves to another and/or has other discussions backed up.
I don't know how practical or convenient that is though. I imagine a lot of groups don't want to risk lost users.
There's going to be a bunch of confusion abound in fan discussions, as each of the characters appearing in this game get different names from the fan translation.
I hate to say this, but I doubt that will ever happen.
It's the 'Kingdom Hearts' issue. When you build on a plot thread across multiple games, you devalue a number of entries as a result. People want the modern convenience and superior design of recent releases, but also don't want to be left out of central information. It's why it's hard to get people into the Trails series. To Ace Attorney's credit, something they've done right in their games is avoid spoiling the central culprit of past games in future ones, even going so far as to only reference vague turnouts of past cases.
It really, really doesn't help that a large number of people consider AJ:AA to be one of the least satisfying games in the series (in part only because they almost all hit a high bar). So if anyone were to skip a game, that might be it.
I think it's vehement disagreement with the premise, or in other words "We don't need a PS5 Pro".
One explanation for the sentiment is that people have already invested a significant chunk of their limited savings into the mammoth PS5 - and want that to provide them some of the best games on offer. They're worried that after a Pro, they will become second citizen or get downscaled games.
Even if you provide an answer like "But that won't happen"...they don't trust that answer. Trust is not common in consumer sentiment right now.
Most browsers are now “sleeping” tabs so it’s only saving the URL, and not any of the data/objects on it. It’s kind of necessary given that modern websites adware has the system requirements of Crysis.
It’s be nice for social networks to have features where you can just pattern-match off of idiot dogwhistle comments like Sweet Baby and automatically block users bringing them up. I have to do it for YouTube and thankfully the incel videos have toned down a little, but every once in a while I get a “Men are OPPRESSED”.
A lot of little things in the trailer really felt like it was a pre-animated demo. Things like using thermal vision to see arriving soldiers, the attentive scan mode in the streets, smooth civilian NPC actions (When you think about it, not many game studios make a calm, populous city street actually coded believably).
Maybe that’s too many years going back to the Killzone 2 trailer making me feel paranoid. Just not sure this game has truly exited development hell.
It’d be fun to make it halfway through the movie to reveal Bruce Wayne is a worthless playboy, and have Barry Allen show up and explain to the current Batman “I’m here to correct a mistake. In my timeline, that drunkard over there is Batman.” “I’m sorry, what?”
It's a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...
I guess if you want to verify the truth of this statement, look at Unity. They walked back their per-install system, but the indie community still moved away from them because it seemed clear they might try to do that at some point in the future.
I feel like a lot of the puzzles in Professor Layton games are like this. Any time you find yourself starting some complex algebra or multiplication, you need to consider rereading the problem and seeing if you just need to pick a number that’s there.
For example: A bus can travel 100 miles on a full tank with its full passenger load of 80 people. If everyone gets off the bus, then how far can it travel?
The answer
0 miles. With everyone off, there’s no one to drive it.
In all seriousness, there’s some characters like Yoshimitsu where I get genuinely confused which series he started in, since I usually see him in Soul Calibur.
The issue that caused this topic to arise wasn't of other people having opinions we didn't like. It wasn't even a case of arguing in bad faith, eg deflecting truth, or disguising real intentions by making arguments the owner doesn't believe for some other purpose (those are also bad, but generally don't get such a response).
The issue was specific moderator/instance-ownership censorship. People's posts were being removed without warning when they were making respectful, good-faith arguments - that disagreed with the politics of lemmy.ml. Worse, they were attempting to be stealthy about this removal so that no one victimized by this censorship was aware of it.
For reference, I'm gonna be a Biden voter. If someone posted "Biden is a piece of trash old man" then I'd disagree with them, but they'd have every right to put that opinion up.
I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy's massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It's been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let's say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they're what's colloquially referred to as...
I am one of the removed comments and just found out about it here. Does the Lemmy standard really not send direct messages to users when one of their messages was removed? If it was an actual Rule 1 violation (which of course, it wasn't) I'd like to know.
The kicker is, for years and years down the line, all of your tech questions will be written to Google as "How do I xxxx in <obscure distro name here>".
Many, but not all, of those problems are resolved by searching "in Linux", but others you'd have to search for "in <similar distro>". Windows is just Windows.
I was excited for Persona 5, but not FFXVI. I think they’ve headed a bit too far down the road of Western imitation - going full medieval look, action combat (which I’m sorry, they’re not good at and it’s still confusing), etc.
The main thing I’ve expected from JRPGs is having a story and world that surprises me. There was something signature about the look of a guy with an oversized sword in a steampunk grungy city that pulled me into those games.
I know they poured a lot of budget into FFXVI, but it feels unplanned and vision-less. Like they could have been making the eikon fights in one team before writing the rest of the story, like how studios will film a car chase in one country and then work it into their action movie’s plot however they want.
I've started feeling this way about anime too, so it's obviously a pervasive problem in Japanese markets.
Got a series that's interesting? You can have some curious character developments and mysteries in the twelve episodes you get, but its REAL reason for existing is the hope of selling merchandise and concluding its story arc across 100 manga releases and 80 episodes (which almost never happens)
I would agree, but XIV (the MMO) moved so far off the norm that I don't really count it with the others. It managed to handle things pretty well, and was stomachable even if the combat mechanics aren't often what draw people in.
It’s normal to view wild ideas like troves of automated users with some skepticism. But consider: Foreign entities would likely have a huge incentive to destabilize domestic elections. If you were them, and had plenty of spare personnel, and A.I. resources…what would you do?
AI doesn’t have to be used as an autoprompter. Paid workers can still review their output or use them for prompting.
If I were Chinese, I might suspect the US intelligence committee enacting foreign influence. But locally, they want functioning government so they get paid.
Also, besides the over-the-top insults, note this guy’s account is new.
Not sure if many will join me on it, but with Microsoft going on the death march for studios, this might be the first of their major releases I don’t even bother with on Game Pass. After all, they fired Tango Gameworks, who knows when they’ll cut these devs loose.
I definitely wish there was more negotiation with tech library companies about this. It makes sense for movies - it's a one-time experience, you only see the supporting studios' logos one time, and it's just building anticipation for the opening moments of the movie. But games are things people play twenty times a week. Someone might see the logos more if they play in shorter sessions, and maybe even avoid playing for a night because they're familiar with the two minutes of setup to get to "actually playing".
I even wish there was more effort to put gaming menus before the launch. A long time ago, Steam standardized a server picker for their own games, so you could skip "launching the game, hitting Server Browser", instead just open the server list, double click one, and then that's your "launching" task taking you to the thing you want to play. Even consoles could do this, even for games using matchmaking. I remember this being something the PS5 promoted in its menus but, not having a PS5, I'm curious if many games followed though.

Downloads on my Surface for the sake of my vacation were the reason I resubscribed. Seems fitting it should be the reason I unsubscribe. I only worry about finding a good point of communication to let them know about this reason.
Q: Do I need Geforce Experience to make use of "Game Ready Drivers" (Nvidia)?
I install Nvidia drivers using NVCleanstall and leave GE uninstalled since I never really use it. Do driver updates that include game optimizations still apply?
