Long-term carrier lock-in could soon be a thing of the past in America after the FCC proposed requiring telcos to unlock cellphones from their networks 60 days after activation....
"Verizon agrees that the FCC should consider the merits and trade-offs of handset unlocking requirements," Verizon spokesperson Rich Young told The Register, though that support is conditional.
Screw verizon with an acid covered cactus. What possible "merits" are there to locking a device down for anyone but the companies selling the phones? Rich Young can go kick rocks.
I will not buy a phone through a carrier, I will not buy a phone with a locked bootloader. Period.
From my understanding, without having a VPN connection to my home network, or proper port forwarding (which sounds like a security nightmare to me) it would only function on my local network?
That is fair. Just historically speaking, I have typically only had 1 port opened on my router for VPN access, and then setting up SSH cert auth from system to system.
Back on windows I have used Resilio Sync. I don't hate it, does essentially what I am looking for, but I am trying to go more open source route. Thank you for the suggestion!
In this specific github entry it mentions flashing, and with my setup, I would prefer not to flash something onto my phone without some sort of backup.
Unless there is a userland app I can install that I seem to be missing.
even after renaming MangoHud.conf to MangoHud.conf.old in ~/.config/MangoHud/
And launch a game with MangoHud, it does work. However, where would the config be if it doesn't show up in ~/.config/MangoHud/
That's what I am trying to figure out, the Readme and Archwiki don't have the paths I am looking for.
I love buying music of artists I find on Bandcamp. I get lossless quality audio, and I get to support the artist. Granted, it is best to do the bandcamp fridays because more money goes to the artist.
However I hate that Epic now owns Bandcamp, and has for a while.
The problem is that I don't use an fdroid client whatsoever. I use Obtanium. So as far as my search has taken me, the fdroid link is the only one with APKs built that Obtanium can use.
I don't mind Obtainum's UI, but I apparently have missed features it has. I don't have F-Droid installed at all currently. I am sure there has got to be a way to find package names without having the F-Droid client installed.
It would be cool if there was a website, or an app that would act as just an F-Droid repo browser to show package details, and other pertinent information.
i've been trying to get rid of non-foss garbage as much as possible but i haven't found anything to replace the microsoft launcher yet, a few good candidates but they were all either underbaked or too unstable to use. Any suggestions?
Mull is my current browser of choice, so I like that idea. I will have to give DivestOS a shot. Thank you!
It doesn't look like the Pixel 8 Pro is supported by DivestOS, at least not from a quick glance. I will have to look into potentially what it would take to build it for it though.
I would have given DivestOS a shot if I was on a Pixel 7 Pro, because that's what I wanted instead of the 8 Pro, but necessity dictated I bought one because I can't be without one for very long.
I will keep an eye on Diveset, but it is looking like I may go back to what I had setup on my 7:
LineageOS, rooted, with my necessary tweaks. At least I like tweaking things, so there is that.
I ended up trying GrapheneOS on my P8P, but it didn't quite fit my use case.
I ended up back on LineageOS again, so I could have AdAway, AFWall+, and as of today I installed a custom kernel (Sultan Kernel) and I am pretty happy with the outcome.
I still love GrapheneOS but I was having issues with notifications among other things.
There didn't appear to be a DivestOS image for my Pixel 8 Pro, so I went back to LineageOS since I couldnt have AdAway and AfWall+ among other things on GrapheneOS.
I did end up getting Android Auto to work luckily. However, other things just went sort of south from there. My use case for GrapheneOS wasn't quite fit.
The built in firewall did work well enough for my usecase. However, I didn't want a DNS based adblocking solution as that took away from my ability to connect to my home VPN. I should reach out to see if they can help. However, I did end up switching back to LineageOS since I could use a custom kernel which significantly lowered the running temps of my phone.
I wanted to try DivestOS, but there isn't a Pixel 8 Pro build yet.
Huge fan of what GrapheneOS and the team/community have done to make it better. I am sure going to keep my eye on it going forward.
Thank you for the suggestion! However, I have used GrapheneOS. And I am a fan, and it could absolutely fulfil most of my needs. However there are a few things that it can't accomplish for me unfortunately.
There are Magisk Modules I use that I couldn't get loaded on GrapheneOS without massive hassle. I also don't want to live without AdAway, App Manager,Pixel IMS, AFWall+, amongst other apps.
I ran GrapheneOS before they supported Android Auto, and for a while after they had put that in. I just don't think it would exactly fit my current wants and needs.
As far as AdAway I totally understand that I could use a local VPN service to accomplish similar and block ads that way, however that would take away from my ability to connect to my home network and block ads.
After reading the following thread:
If you don't have anything of value to add, why comment?
What one person views as a problem/inconvenience will vary from person to person. Just because you have 25 years of experience doesn't mean you get to dictate what constitutes as a problem or inconvenience for another.
I don't care to read a "defense" from you. We don't need gatekeeping, belittling, or general arrogance in any Linux community. This isn't an attack, this is simply a friendly reminder to do better.
Stating issues with Teams on Linux isn't blaming Linux by default.
Can’t participate in Microsoft Teams calls if the input and output audio devices are the same device or the call disconnects/reconnects every few seconds. Microphone and speaker must be separate devices for optimal experience.
How is this laying blame on anyone? It wasn't blaming Linux, or blaming Microsoft, or blaming anyone. It was a statement of what issues they were having.
You are not taking too kindly based on inferences you have made. Are you sincerely this dense?
Instead of being a knob end, you could have approached the conversation differently. You added nothing to the discussion. You lashed out to someone discussing their experiences because you got offended. Grow thicker skin, grow up, go touch grass. No need to take out your frustrations on folks having a civil discussion until your juvenile ass behavior stunk it all up.
Not being able to run "most" games on Linux is a skill issue. If you wsnt to use windows fine, I won't stop you. But you are spewing a bunch of anecdotal nonsense.
You want to use a subpar paid for OS with telemetry, ads, and to support a greedy corporation for your convenience; Thats your prerogative.
At least educate yourself before you speak on topics you lack greater understanding of.
