The laws are currently the same for everyone when it comes to what you can use to train an AI with. I, as an individual, can use whatever public facing data I wish to build or fine tune AI models, same as Microsoft.

If we make copyright laws even stronger, the only one getting locked out of the game are the little guys. Microsoft, google and company can afford to pay ridiculous prices for datasets. What they don't own mainly comes from aggregators like Reddit, Getty, Instagram and Stack.

Boosting copyright laws essentially kill all legal forms of open source AI. It would force the open source scene to go underground as a pirate network and lead to the scenario you mentioned.

There is a black mirror episode where a person puts an implant inside their brain that hears an echo of their brain wave activity. Once the implant essentially becomes that person, it's removed and put into a smart home device.

It's a three parter, an other bit has a criminals copy being tortured to get a confession out of it.

It's a Christmas special so it's a solid hour and a half.

Or maybe oxygen, came out in 2021

Hydrogen is definitely interesting for the future but is currently used by the oil industry to stall the transition away from gas. On top of that, almost all hydrogen making its way to market is dirty.

We can think about hydrogen and the mountains of infrastructure it needs after the oil barons are all dead.

Grimy ,

Most of the hydrogen on market is made with methane.

EVs use whatever source is being given, and most of these sources are converting to renewables.

Not comparable imo.

It's also worth noting that EVs can be charged at home. Fast charging isn't necessary for most and it's silly to pretend like hydrogen doesn't need its own distribution network. It's a lot more complicated to set up a hydrogen refilling station than a fast charging one and you can't fully fill your hydrogen over night by plugging it into your wall outlet.

Grimy , (edited )

you can't count on the grid's energy mix improving or not getting worse as the vehicle fleet transitions to BEV.

That is a possibility but they have already corrupted hydrogen. Between the two, I will go with the one that can go either way. There's also the fact that EVs are being produced now while hydrogen car production is still a way off, so it's a stall tactic as well

Yet somehow these "fast" charging stations, which aren't as fast or convenient as regular gas stations (and still run at least partially on fossil fuels anyway), have to get built everywhere. If we can't get rid of these stations then let them be hydrogen stations.

They can also be set up anywhere and are much more convenient, I've seen quite a few in residential streets, companies can set them up in their parking lots, etc. You can't treat a compressed gas the same way, even if it's just the canisters. It willl require much more investment in our infrastructure and conversion isn't straight forward.

I think it's cool tech but in our situation and looking at our current needs, pushing for hydrogen right now is a pipe dream fueld by the oil industry.

This is mostly for the car industry though, the same doesn't necessarily hold for the industrial sector.

Grimy ,

I wish they could send it into space so it can orbit the sun forever instead of burning up.

Grimy ,

They should definitely respect the licenses, that being said, Microsoft owns GitHub and can be a bit quick in what they ban. It also means they are beholden to US laws, which could turn anti FOSS-AI in the near future.

This is a smart move and I honestly hope more countries start doing it. It would probably lead to a better ecosystem.

Grimy ,

It would be going against the current though and would have to be part submarine and part drill.

Grimy ,

It's not about collecting data, the fediverse freely shares all its data by nature.

Threads has a lot more users and Meta would use that to attack smaller instances, a bit like what Lemmy world was doing a few months ago.

The biggest instances usually have the most communities and if they ban other instances, rival members are more likely to migrate over than to create copy cat communities.

It's not terrible at the moment but bringing in threads is like throwing a shark in a shrimp tank.

Grimy ,

The consequences of doing a bad thing are on the person doing it, not the whistle blower.

If they wanted to keep their secrets, they should of made sure they weren't so fucking rough. Nobody would of leaked any files if those heli pilots were saving children instead of joking after killing them.

US Record Labels Sue AI Music Generators Suno and Udio for Copyright Infringement ( www.wired.com )

The music industry has officially declared war on Suno and Udio, two of the most prominent AI music generators. A group of music labels including Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music Group has filed lawsuits in US federal court on Monday morning alleging copyright infringement on a “massive scale.”...

Grimy ,

Multi-billion dollar corporations like Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music Group?

All of music is basically owned by like 4 companies. This is them trying to make sure they own all AI generated music too.

Grimy ,

AI tools and entertainment will become common place in the future. All these lawsuits decide is if we can have it for free or through a subscription payed to Sony and friends.

Grimy ,

It's not that they need more, it's that they get double from the oil industry to do nothing.

Grimy ,

By far the largest recipient of purchase subsidies was Chinese NEV manufacturer BYD, which in 2022 alone received purchase subsidies amounting to €1.6 billion (for about 1.4 million NEV) (Figure 4). The second largest recipient of purchase subsidies was US-headquartered Tesla, which received about €0.4 billion (for about 250,000 BEV produced in its Shanghai Gigafactory)

Am I reading this right? They actually gave half a billion euros to Tesla and I'm suppose to believe they are the bad guys?

This is so transparent as to be insulting. Pure oil propoganda.

Grimy ,

The only physical proof you can have of a person that lived before photography is a body. So no, Jesus did not have a publically marked grave and we do not have his bones.

That being said, there is a difference between proving something historically and proving it in the court of law. Historical evidence points to Jesus having been a person that lived around that time.

TollBit, a startup aiming to broker paid licensing deals between publishers and AI companies.

If we can't scrape data freely, it instantly kills the open source scene. These regulation only benefit companies like OpenAi and Google, who will happily pay an exorbitant price to have exclusive rights on data they don't already own and get a monopoly in return, as well as the companies who own this data like Reddit, Getty, Adobe, etc.

Getting a dime was never in the cards for individuals except maybe the outliers like GRR who can throw their weight around.

Almost all regulation being proposed only benefit big AI companies and are meant to kill any competition. They are flooding the media with bad sentiment articles to manipulate people so they can tell congress their constituents want this.

Grimy , (edited )

I'd say they are pushing for regulations behind the scene because they know it gives them an instant monopoly.

They are already pass the door, they can afford to shut it behind them to own the room. Having to send checks to websites like Reddit and Getty in the future is a small price to pay.

Grimy ,

They stand to profit if this is made into a real law.

Any regulation on AI just kill off their competition at this point. They are both lobbying for it and numerous proposed "anti-AI" laws have been their doing.

Grimy ,

Why did you specifically not put in bold this part and are the property of Cara. Clearly you saw it off you took the time to avoid putting stars around it.

Grimy , (edited )

Regardless, their terms of service let's Cara not only sell prints and your artwork to third parties but also let's them sell your artwork for AI training if they wanted to.

Instagram for all it's fault specifically says that they don't own your artwork and only get a license to show it.

What song should I play for my bathroom neighbors?

The work bathroom is currently a warzone, on their phone speakers people like to play music, play games at full blast, and one guy likes to chill to ambient rainforest. What song can I play to passive aggressively make it known that I don't want to listen to their tik tok feeds while I work out my demons?

Several users on X.com reported that, when they asked the search engine how many Muslim presidents the U.S. has had, it said that we had one who was Barack Obama (this is widely known to be false).

By the time I tried to replicate this query, I could not do so until I changed the word “presidents” to “heads of state.”

So they are changing responses on the query side as they go viral but aren't even including synonyms. Yikes, someone is definitely getting fired.

Grimy ,

There are currently a lot of fake screenshots since it quickly became a meme, pretty sure this is one.

Still a fuck up in general on their part.

Grimy ,

Llms need a lot of data, to the point that applying copyrights to the training would only let a few companies in the game (Google and Microsoft). It would kill the open source scene and most of the data is owned by websites like Reddit, stack and getty anyways. Individual contributors wouldn't get anything out of it.

You also have to be willfully blind in my opinion to seriously think generative AI has as narrow a scope as crypto.

This stuff is rocket fuel to the gaming industry for instance. It will let indie companies put out triple A games and I'm guessing next gen RPGs will have fully interactive NPCs.

Grimy ,

There's already some open source models from other companies. I also think the requirements will go down with time as well but energy is definitely an issue.

Meta actually released an open source model which jumpstarted the whole ecosystem, anyone can fine-tune a base model now. You can take your favorite hobby, accumulate data on it and build something in a few days and share it.

I just think the good outweigh the bad and individuals weren't going to get paid anyways. Most of the data is owned by specific websites, big publishing houses and the like so I can overlook the infringement issues.

iPhones And Androids Can Now Warn You of 'Secret Trackers' ( www.ibtimes.co.uk )

This standard allows users on iOS and Android devices to be alerted if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is monitoring their location.

My gut tells me they only sell in bulk, you can't just request your ex girlfriends dataset

Grimy ,

I used to say the same about cash but really, anything that makes my life easier I end up enjoying.

I whittled myself down from a fat wallet to one card on me and one in my car. I still sometimes forget it or lose it so I wouldn't mind it being permanently attached to my face but don't get me wrong, I really don't need it either.

In terms of data mining, I don't really see what more they can get? Maybe makeup habits for women or eye reflection to see who else is with you but that seems a bit intense. All the financial data, they already have if using a card.

Seriously though, boggles my mind that there isn't more data protection relating to banking. It shouldn't even be an issue, none of that data should be touched.

Grimy , (edited )

They "let the cat out of the bag" by referencing the movie "Her" if I understand correctly. Not really an admition of guilt like the article makes it seem.

They also clearly state on their website that they used an other voice actor. If you actually compare both voices, they aren't the same just similar. They probably went with someone that sounds like her on purpose specifically because of the movie but that's fine really.

This article is emotional and manipulative. I don't think scar jo deserves to own the whole spectrum her voice belongs to just because she voiced an AI in one movie. This is how you end up with corporations owning all voices like they tried with music.

Grimy ,

Just like scarlet doesn't own all voices that sound mildly like her, Spike Jonze doesn't own the concept of an AI companion.

I'm not really sure what your point is, there's nothing to rip off. No matter what they make it sound like, there's going to be similarities with the movie. There's nothing wrong with leaning into these for advertising purposes.

Grimy , (edited )

You don't need an admission of guilt to lose in court.

Currently even if they used voice clips to train a model on her voice it wouldn't be illegal. That isn't currently the case, since they say they used an other actress that sounds like her anyways.

Does Taylor Swift deserve to own a whole spectrum of voice?

No, just like she doesn't deserve to own the four chord progressions that make up her songs. If she did, she could literally sue half of all pop music.

This is why none of this is copyrightable. There are too many people that have similar voices and too many songs that use similar chord progressions.

Your fantasy where this empowers small time artists is just that, a fantasy. If we push and they come out with new laws that make these things copyrightable, you just end up with corporations owning all of it.

Grimy ,

I'm saying practically any voice with the associated bubbly flirty personality is going to make you think of the movie Her in such a context.

Sure they leaned into it for advertising purposes but a tweet referencing it and showcasing the one voice that sounds like her out of the five isn't crossing the line imo.

I think it's a slippery slope to say any AI assistant that has a similar timbre and personality as an AI in a movie is off limits.

As long as they don't infringe by calling it "Scarjo" or saying "From the movie Her" I don't see a problem.

Grimy ,

Ya I get your point, I just think the similarities are too vague and trying to put down boundaries is fool hardy.

Like what's the spectrum of voice that isn't allowed here, how much does it need to differ from scarjo. Is it just because the character was AI. How much does the personality have to differ if that part matters.

Here's a comparison by the way, they are hardly the same imo.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aQ8UVSXnefk

I also don't think liking the movie or asking scarjo really mean anything if you think about it.

People can get their inspiration from wherever they like and falling in love with an AI is nothing novel, the directors certainly don't have claim to the concept.

In any case, I think mostly it's just hard to draw the line and the line will most likely only benefit corporations and mega celebrities while directly inconveniencing the rest of us.

Grimy ,

Sony is probably working on a music generator as we speak. So it's not like Sony vs AI but Sony AI Monopoly vs Diverse AI ecosystem including FOSS.

I also consider the data stolen in either case, since Sony isn't going to give a dime more to their artists when they either sell the data or come out with their own software. Actually, if everyone owns it and can use it to train, I see it more as sharing tbh.

I guess I might be bias, I hate these fat cat companies trying to strangle new tech so we have to lick their boots while using it.

Grimy ,

If copyrights apply, only you and stack own the data. You can opt out but 99% of users don't. No users get any money. Google or Microsoft buys stack so only they can use the data. We only get subscription based AI, open source dies.

If copyrights don't apply, everyone owns the data. The users still don't get any money but they get free open source AI built off their work instead of closed source AI built off their work.

Having the website have copyright of the content in the context of AI training would be a fucking disaster.
