[US] I'm hesitating launching my own business because I'd lose health insurance for my family. What are my options?

I have everything pretty much ready to launch full time. Time, skills, customers, support from family. But I'd leave my current job behind and with it my family's health insurance for the foreseeable future. I can't afford any of the options I've seen. It's the one thing holding me back. Any ideas for affordable health insurance...

GiddyGap OP ,

I can, but it's still outrageously expensive compared to my current situation. It would put a lot of financial stress on us in a situation that's already stressful in every way possible.

GiddyGap OP ,

Yeah, that's also what I'm thinking. It's just so sad that the US healthcare system is the thing that's holding back business. Seems counterintuitive. I was just hoping someone knew of a good workaround.

I guess one option is to save more and risk losing the business opportunity.

GiddyGap OP ,

It would work anywhere, but the opportunity I have is in the US and moving overseas right now is not really an option.

I do feel discouraged that it's the healthcare system that's holding back my business opportunity. Shouldn't be like that.

GiddyGap OP ,

I don't like that.

I was actually part of a startup in Europe some years ago. Healthcare was not part of the equation.

GiddyGap OP ,

Thanks for the suggestions. We have been thinking about having my partner switch jobs to something that provides better healthcare coverage. But that could take a while and put the business opportunity at risk.

GiddyGap ,

This is the dog equivalent of "guns don't kill people, people kill people."

But without the gun, no one would be killed by the gun.

GiddyGap ,

The will cannot drive the action without the tool.

GiddyGap , (edited )

What next tool are you talking about?

Guns are specifically designed to kill people as quickly and efficiently as possible and at great distance. Take that tool away and you put some serious limits on the will to kill.

GiddyGap ,

Governments are pretty damn inefficient and tend to waste a lot of money because of the process and bureaucracy.

I wish you would take a look at how government works in places like Scandinavia and much of Western Europe. Their universal healthcare systems are very efficient and cost-effective.

Other than politics and gone-wild ideology, there's no reason the US couldn't do the same.

GiddyGap ,

Continue the good work, EU. You obviously hit a nerve, so you know you're on the right track.

GiddyGap ,

You don't sound like a very smart person.

GiddyGap ,

Dumb and tactless. The classic gun-nut combo.

GiddyGap ,

Go read the person's comments. I think most will agree that their behavior is dumb in every sense of the word. They need to know that. Not that anything will change, but at least they've been called out.

GiddyGap ,

Calling someone dumb for being dumb is not tactless. Calling someone a cunt for calling out their objective stupidity is tactless.

Chinese police were allowed into Australia to speak with a woman. They breached protocol and escorted her back to China ( www.abc.net.au )

Chinese police hunting international corruption targets were allowed into Australia by the federal police and subsequently escorted a woman back to China for trial, in a major breach of Chinese-Australian police protocols....

GiddyGap ,

Why the heck would Australia even allow Chinese police on their soil? Isn't this usually done by requesting extradition? Makes no sense.

USA Lemmies: Where do you live?

I comment a lot on stories having to do with state governments and legislation or regions of the country. It got me wondering how many people I'm accidentally disparaging when I don't mean everyone in said state or region is terrible. So… Please be as specific or obtuse as your privacy filter requires. I'll start:...

GiddyGap ,

Yeah, Colorado (along with the New England states) is one of few places in the US where rural does not necessarily mean red.

GiddyGap ,

One of my favorite small cities. Would live there if I could, but it's unfortunately too expensive.

American wanting to move abroad, what's the best bet for an registered nurse?

Hi there, I'm a registered nurse in Phoenix, Arizona and I'm seriously considering moving abroad because this country is driving me insane for a lot of reasons. I was considering moving to Israel since I'm Jewish and I've heard they have a better healthcare system there and pay nurses well but this war has made me not really...

GiddyGap ,

Switzerland intentionally makes things hard for Americans. For example, it's very hard to open a bank account because the US government have harsh reporting rules for American citizens. And Switzerland has strong financial privacy rules. So they just deny American citizens.

GiddyGap ,

This is an issue all over the Western world, including the US.

GiddyGap ,

As someone who has taken dumps in mansions in both the state of Georgia and the French Riviera, I agree. Costs a lot more in the French Riviera, though.

GiddyGap ,

This can be very hard, especially if you're in the US where "getting something checked out" can be excessively expensive and cost prohibitive. Shelling out $100 to go see a doc for something that's not an emergency is not an option for many people.

Unfortunately, it seem like those in power are interested in changing that and many people are not voting for candidates who want to change it. So, here we are.

GiddyGap ,

I get the appeal of a basement from a space perspective, but this is the exact reason why I always steer clear of any house with a basement when house shopping. Seen too many flooded basements.

GiddyGap ,

Very often there just isn't a "higher up." Much easier, and especially easier on the mind, to not have a basement. At least for me.

GiddyGap ,

No.

How come liberals dont hate conservatives the way conservatives hate liberals

I constantly see angry mobs of people decrying "woke", "critical race theory", ""grooming"", and whatever other nonsense they made up this week. They march around with guns, constantly appending lib as a prefix to any word they can use to denigrate. They actively plot violence and spew hatred in the open....

GiddyGap ,

I think there's an equal amount of anger on both sides. Unfortunately.

There's no longer room for actual, mature debate. Just mud-slinging and slurs. The fact is that most people are somewhere in the center politically, but the extremists are louder and get the attention because it's entertaining and the media uses it to sell content. It sucks.

GiddyGap ,

Mine does, too. But I'm interested in moving to an EV for the sake of the environment and the planet. Not necessarily a Tesla, though.

GiddyGap ,

It's important to do my part for the environment, even if it comes at a cost. I'm willing to deal with some initial issues since it's a newer technology.

GiddyGap ,

There are lots of evangelicals. That's the answer.

There are also fewer and fewer evangelicals. So, it could change significantly over the next decade.

GiddyGap ,

Americans actually pay more per capita towards public healthcare than most Europeans, but it just covers so much less (Medicaid and Medicare) because of insane healthcare prices.

GiddyGap ,

Other than on price, Tesla is just not on par with premium German brands.

GiddyGap ,

Also, millions of people living in Texas are not originally from Texas and have no particular allegiance to Texas.

GiddyGap ,

There's just a lot of inequality in the US that is both socially and politically unacceptable in the rest of the developed world. Extremes are more accepted here.

There are more extremely rich people than you would see in other Western countries and and many, many more extremely poor people than in other Western countries. Alleviating that would mean implementing policies to redistribute wealth that many Americans are not willing to implement, especially conservatives.

The US basically sacrifices the good of the many for the great of the few.

GiddyGap ,

Which seems even stranger. In many other countries, Christians vote left of center to promote economic equality, reduce poverty, get green policies to protect God's green earth, make sure that everyone has universal access to healthcare and education, etc.

In the US, they vote oppotite of that.

GiddyGap ,

that doesn't exist outside the internet.

Never been to any type of city, I see.
