It looks suspiciously as though Roberts doesn't want to be remembered as the chief justice who obliterated all respect for the Supreme Court

No link here; we're getting new decisions at the rate one expects from late June, and there are still far larger ones to drop, including regarding Trump's claim of absolute immunity. No one is going to be talking about Idaho once we get that....

Meh.

John Roberts is worth $25,000,000.

That's all he cares about. We're really going to find out how awful all of these people are after November, I imagine.

Coke—and Dozens of Others—Pledged to Quit Russia. They’re Still There. ( www.bloomberg.com )

After Vladimir Putin’s troops surged over the Ukrainian border in February 2022, the Coca-Cola Co. was among the first multinationals to pledge it would quit Russia in protest. Aiming to avoid the inevitable headaches of complying with expected Western sanctions on the Kremlin, Coke asked its partners there to pull its cans...

I dunno, man. I keep telling people to stop voting capitalist, and every election it's 99% Democrat and Republican, so this is what happens.

Reminds me of how vociferously the Right raged against Obama when his DOJ released its report on domestic terrorism and rightly attributed to right-wing interests. Obama, as the good corporate lap dog that he was, apologized for saying the correct, factual things, which is weird, because that report's one of the few good things Obama ever did.

Not awesome.

Dad's in the hospital for the umpteenth time.

Kid brother died yesterday morning, and even better, may have inadvertently hung himself during autoerotic asphyxiation. (Though, objectively, that seems like a decent way to go, truly.)

Israel keeps pounding murdering people in Gaza as Palestinian death toll in hostage rescue raid rises to 274.

That feels a tad more honest.

LOL

US agencies will take their bribes and do jack shit. As with everything else, Europe will lead on the regulatory front.

Brave's native adblock works better than anything else I've tried.

Give Brave a look, folks.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

False.

They sold data from Brave search, which you don't have to use. (and I don't.)

Also, the crypto thing is also opt-in. You don't have to use it either.

It works better than Firefox, especially if your aim is blocking ads.

@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I think that, if you're going to pretend to know what you're talking about, you should know what you're talking about.

I think it's a good thing that a person as to willingly opt-in to data collection.

It's really that simple.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

That's fine. Do what you like.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

They still sold user data without being upfront about it until caught,

And then they did better, as a business should. It's all in their FAQ.

I'm not sure why there has to be a circle jerk of trolls any time someone mentions Brave, but here we are.

The US is fascist now. Lots of inappropriate stuff us making a comeback.

It's friday.

I made it to the gym and feel glorious. I'm on Day 4 of being a primary Linux user and it feels nice to know that I'm digitally flipping Microsoft the bird.

I work out six days a week, haha.

Once you get to a point where it's like brushing your teeth, it's easy.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Ya love to see it.

If you're not a fascist.

And bonus points to Israel for trotting out the old tried and true: "If you're not with us you're with the terrorists" bullshit.

This is just silly on the part of Iran.

All they need to do is just let the health care system and poverty slaughter the people for them, like we do in America. It's much more civilized.

Both in Iran and the US, it is indeed. Two different paths down the same mountain.

Watching the rest of the world slowly turn on Israel makes my heart go all pitter patter.

Well done.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

The bummer here is that, until the US stops protecting them (which is never, ever going to happen), it doesn't matter a whole lot in the end.

But I'd still like to see the US cut Israel off.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I hope you're right.

I had a similar feeling when the 2010 census showed a 28% increased in mixed-race families nationwide, and now a mere 14 years later we're months away from becoming an openly fascist country. (I'd argue we're already a closet fascist country)

the real winner will likely be Apple and Macs

I'm sure they will find a way to enshittify in a equally intrusive manner.

Why do people hate people? - A question by 'curious kid' Daisy, age 9, Lake Oswego, Oregon ( theconversation.com )

Understanding hate as an emotional response can help you recognize your feelings about something or someone and be curious about where those feelings are coming from. This awareness will give you time to gather more information and imagine the other person’s perspective....

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I don't hate anyone in particular.

I do, however, hate "everyone".

There are just so many small ways that people are insufferable.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I would. These banks are and have always been highly corrupt, which will happen when you aren't properly regulated. There's just no reason not to gamble with people's money (off the books of course) since Uncle Sam will pay you back the losses out of public money.

Imagine you're planning a big party and you've set a budget for how much you can spend on food, decorations, and entertainment. To stick to your budget, you decide not to include the cost of some items, like extra snacks and drinks, in your official party budget. Instead, you plan to buy these items using separate money that you haven't counted in your main budget.

In this analogy, your official party budget is like a bank's balance sheet, which shows all the assets and liabilities they officially recognize. The extra snacks and drinks are like off-balance sheet assets—they're costs and commitments that exist but aren't included in the main budget (or balance sheet) that everyone sees. Just like how not accounting for these extra items might make your party budget look more manageable, keeping assets off the balance sheet can make a bank's financial health appear better than it actually is, potentially hiding risks or liabilities.

Very.

The major social media sites were programmed to feed people content that convinces them that their opinions are fully valid while also keeping them perpetually angry, all to keep their eyeballs glued to ads.

When content synthesized by AI gets more sophisticated, we won't be able to tell the difference.

*EDIT: Apparently the original story was deleted.

I can't find a legit source for this.

Doesn't change the fact that Israel and Genocide Joe are warmongers, but it appears this is false, maybe a reverse recycling job on the propaganda around Israel supposedly finding warheads in kids' toy chests.

HA, funny that this comes up. DND Beyond doesn't have a d100, so I opened my ChatGPT sub and had it roll a d100 for me a few times so I could use my magic beans properly.
