It's hard to read the text against a green background too. I'm so tired of Apple.

Israel's high court orders the army to draft ultra-Orthodox men, rattling Netanyahu's government ( apnews.com )

Israel’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled unanimously that the military must begin drafting ultra-Orthodox men for compulsory service, a landmark decision that could lead to the collapse of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing coalition as Israel continues to wage war in Gaza....

FarraigePlaisteach ,

Being blissfully unaware of Israel’s “culture”, could someone explain who the ultra-orthodox are and why it affects Mileikowsky?

FarraigePlaisteach ,

I appreciate that, thank you.

FarraigePlaisteach ,

Oh no 😔

Even Apple finally admits that 8GB RAM isn't enough ( www.xda-developers.com )

There were a number of exciting announcements from Apple at WWDC 2024, from macOS Sequoia to Apple Intelligence. However, a subtle addition to Xcode 16 — the development environment for Apple platforms, like iOS and macOS — is a feature called Predictive Code Completion. Unfortunately, if you bought into Apple's claim that...

I assumed that the Mini was the effectively a Mac without a monitor. Is it relatively underpowered too?

FarraigePlaisteach ,

And even if the out-of-the-box RAM is soldered to the machine, it should still be possible to add supplementary RAM that isn't soldered for when the system demands it. Other computers have worked like this in the past with chip RAM but a socket to add more.

FarraigePlaisteach ,

But would an M1 Mini be similar to an M1 iMac?

The horrors of this invasion should be taught in school history. There's a danger that we look at the horrors of the past, which are also taught in our history, and think "well, I don't think this would happen in this day and age". We can't afford to stay complacent.

FarraigePlaisteach ,

We certainly shouldn’t wait for several decades, which is when a lot of the examples we teach currently happened.

Also while we should obviously be responsible, it’s disingenuous to imply that there are not plenty of verified war crimes already. There is no further context needed to show how depraved we as humans can get if we don’t keep our politicians, education and media in check.

FarraigePlaisteach ,

I got tired of having to learn new things. The latest was a reverse proxy that I didn't want to configure and maintain. I decided that life is short and just use samba to serve media as files. One lighttpd server for my favourite movies so I can watch them from anywhere. The rest I moved to free online services or apps that sync across mobile and desktop.

Well, we can't trust that corruption would be low enough that this wouldn't be exploited for other reasons. Child trafficking and exploitation is off the charts. If this did actually help those kids I'd consider supporting it. But I do remember when Apple announced that they would do this that some groups that seemed reputable claimed that it wouldn't actually help. I don't know what to think of it.

The last few months do not paint the US as the peacemakers here. It's hard to tell what motivation they have here beyond saving face before election time.

“The ceasefire would evolve into a permanent end to hostilities”

When have the Israelis ever resisted their urge for hostility. Palestinians can’t even play a game of chess outside without a petty IOF soldier knocking the board to the ground. They constantly agitate.

I would love to see a ceasefire, but is it realistic to expect it from Israel?

UN Security Council backs plan for Israel-Hamas ceasefire ( www.reuters.com )

UNITED NATIONS, June 10 (Reuters) - The United Nations Security Council on Monday backed a proposal outlined by President Joe Biden for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip and urged the Palestinian militants to accept the deal aimed at ending the eight-month-long war....

Even if they do “confirm”, I’d find it hard to believe. I hope, though.

Why is End of Life of an OS bad for an average user?

I get that there won't be any security updates. So any problem found can be exploited. But how high is the chance for problems for an average user if you say, only browse some safe websites? If you have a pc you don't really care much about, without any personal information? It feels like the danger is more theoretical than...

Seeming reasonable in the context of the madness of constant growth is still not reasonable. I get what you mean, but we need to demand better of the ultra powerful if we want to see better in our lifetime.

FarraigePlaisteach ,

All talk about websites in the comments, but what about using just an email client and maybe ssh, rsync etc.

One timing I don’t see mentioned here is to learn what you can about ADHD and executive dysfunction. The more you know “this is the ADHD” the less you need to blame yourself. If you don’t understand the condition as fully as possible then we blame ourselves by default.

FarraigePlaisteach ,

It’s not even political. It’s humanitarian. Watching a show linked to ongoing genocide is depressing. Why would I want to tune into that.

FarraigePlaisteach ,

‘"We hope the world hears us and knows that the people of Israel are not the government of Israel," said one protester.‘

I really wanted to believe that, but they have the same PRV type of voting system as Ireland so that’s hard to believe. It’s not like UK/US where the votes are counted in a more primitive way.
