I like to put it this way.

Television is like binoculars and the internet is like a microscope.

Watch TV and you'll see all sorts of things from a distance, and kind of get an idea of how they interconnect. A good general idea of what's going on.

Use the internet and you'll end up spending six months arguing over which version of Batman had the most effective utility belt.

Dagwood222 ,

First, you've proven my point about how the interwebs can lead us into stupid, inane, meaningless arguments that prove nothing.

Second, comic book Batman always carries krytonite in case Supes goes rogue, and that beats some surfing gear any day of the week.

Dagwood222 ,

It's kinda problematic. 'Rainbow kryptonite' would be more appropriate,

My hat's off to Lindsay if she's finally gotten her act together.

Cringiest thing I ever saw was her and Charlie Sheen in Scary Movie 5

Dagwood222 , (edited )

They are all pretty much variations on the same joke.

Lindsay and Charlie Sheen have one scene together.

Dagwood222 ,

None of these ideas are my original thoughts. I'm paraphrasing a bunch of other folks.

Similar things happened to music in the 1960s and movies in the 1970s. The old system had fallen apart and no one in charge had any idea what to do. The only thing they could think of was to throw cash at anything that moved and hope for the best.

That's why in the 1960s you could have bands as diverse as Frank Zappa and Bob Dylan, and Sha-Na-Na and Iron Butterfly etc etc all getting a chance. They guys [it was 99% men] who understood Sinatra and Bing Crosby just went with whatever the kids seemed interested in.

Same thing in the 1970s with movies. 'Star Wars' was a giant gamble, but the studio heads figured they had to try something.

Cut to today. Entertainment industry has figured out how to keep the machine moving. We'll keep getting Taylor Swift and Marvel movies until the next generation stops paying.

Obviously, this is only scratching the surface.

Dagwood222 ,

I don't know who Charlie is, but I know he don't surf!!

How much time to put a little product in your hair?

How hard is it to listen to a language lesson instead of that song you've heard a million times?

Get some nice collared shirts instead of fanboy T-shirts?

Watch one how to dance video?

Have you tried applying for Civil Service jobs?

Oil man Cheney wanted to open Afghanistan to a pipeline project.

Gore probably would have used special ops teams to locate and extract bin Ladn.

Also, the Taliban destroyed statues of the Buddha that had stood for centuries. That happened in March of 2001. The Bush administration didn't want to hurt the oil deal, so they let the Taliban go ahead. Gore might have done more to stop the destruction. Seeing America take a firm stand on a minor issue might have deterred the Afghans from allowing bin Ladn to hide there.

Another thing. There was a report issued before the 9/11 attack. If Gore had been President, the White House might have acted to stop the attack.

Dagwood222 ,

Which is why you vote against the GOP in every election.

They have been wrong about everything since Nixon.

Came across an odd sentence in the Harlequin Presents I'm reading for the . It says the heroine's dress makes her look "very feminine, but hid none of her curves."

Might just be a careless way of writing but it implies that the "femininity" of the dress comes from an air of modesty and that demonstrating you have curves is generally considered unfeminine. Unless you do it just right.

Weird.

@romancebooks

Dagwood222 ,

What year was the book written?

Dagwood222 ,

My guess would be that the writer confused the terms "ladylike" and "feminine."

A "lady" wouldn't want to look like she was showing off her body.

My vote is that it's bad writing and nothing else.

Dagwood222 ,

From an episode of Animaniacs.

Bernadette Peters was playing a cat.

"The worst sin in life is playing too hip for the room."

Dagwood222 ,

angus.

Just for my edification, what were you trying to type?

Dagwood222 ,

Guess 'angus' is a local slang I am unaware of.

I'll casually drop it in conversation and see what happens.

Thanks for responding.

Dagwood222 ,

Fo' shizzle?

Just finished the first Honor Harrington book

...maybe a little too on the nose with channeling Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey, there's some truly problematic stuff with the native Medusans that goes all but uncommented upon, there's some reactionary politics that may just be de rigeur for 20th century military sci-fi (I don't know... would be happy to be educated), and...

Dagwood222 ,

[off topic]

I'm gonna hijack to put in a plug for "The Guns Above" by Robin Bennis.

It's airships in the Napoleonic Era with great engineering details and battle scenes. I don't know why they stopped at two books, but the first one is a lot of fun.

Dagwood222 ,

Let me put it this way...

At one point, I was imagining the author giggling madly at 3 am as she calculated how much rattan you'd need to support a cannon on an airship's gundeck.

Enjoy

Dagwood222 ,

I live in a big city. I go to the store and talk to the salespeople. Most of the time, they know the products and are willing to explain the assests of each brand. The caveat is to ask other people about the good stores. In my area, BestBuy is terrible for overselling, while Staples gives great service.

Dagwood222 ,

Sorry.

Dagwood222 ,

People are downvoting you for giving the actual reasoning.

Dagwood222 ,

"Libertarian" became popular in the US when it started being incorporated into various science fiction novels. Probably the most famous is "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress." I love the book as science fiction, but the society the author creates depends on so many caveats that even the author has the old style 'free' system fall apart as soon as an actual government [as opposed to prison regulations] is formed.

Dagwood222 ,

How often do we see real competition? Even if a new company comes along with a great idea, it's more likely to be gobbled up by a bigger company than be left to flourish.

Dagwood222 ,

Ten major companies control all the food in the US, and six companies control all the media.

Dagwood222 ,

Heinlein was a huge friend to Philip K. Dick, and any number of Jewish science fiction writers. He was one of the first writers to have an African woman as a hero, one of the first to have a transman character. Stop using the word 'fascist' for anyone on the Right. It dilutes the term.

Dagwood222 ,

And then you wonder why the Left loses pretty much every election.

Dagwood222 ,

Exactly my point.

Call me when you actually win an election.

Dagwood222 ,

If you can't win an argument without using foul language, you probably don't have many good ideas.

Bye bye.

Dagwood222 ,

Yes, a competition to see which company ends up runnign everything.

Dagwood222 ,

Remember back in 2016 when Trump challenged Bernie Sanders to a debate? Bernie said sure and Trump had to walk it back.

The last thing Trump and his people wants it to have to have him stand up in an uncontrolled setting.

I'll be amazed if these debates happen.

Dagwood222 ,

When they were both running for their Party's nomination, Trump challenged Bernie Sanders to a debate. Bernie said 'sure,' and Trump had to walk it back.

Dagwood222 ,

You're getting down votes, which is just silly.

Back in the day, a man wasn't really a man unless he changed his own oil and tuned up the car himself. That mentality has reemerged in the 21st century.

Dagwood222 ,

I got downvoted as well.

People really seem to take the idea personally.

Why Didn't Democrats Do More When They Controlled Both Houses of Legislature, The White House, and The Supreme Court During Obama's First Term?

I've been wondering for a bit why during the time the Democrats controlled the legislature, executive, and judicial branches during Obama's first term in 2008 more wasn't accomplished. Shouldn't that have been the opportunity to make Row V Way law and fix the electoral college? I understand the recession was going on but outside...

Dagwood222 ,

You can't 'fix' the electoral College. It's in the Constitution and will never be overturned because getting rid of it means that the small states lose a lot of power. As for the rest, Obama was trying to be a Left Center leader, not a radical Leftist.

Dagwood222 ,

One of things that annoys me most is people on the Left who act like the overwhelming majority of people in the country agree with them.

According to the best estimate I've seen, 44% of the people "somewhat agree" with Socialism, and about 6% are "strongly" in favor of Socialism.

Dagwood222 ,

And yet, Obamacare barely passed and Trump managed to pass a huge tax cut for the rich.

Look how many people were outraged when AOC wore a dress that said 'Tax The Rich.'

I wish I was in the majority, but I know I'm not.

Dagwood222 ,

Marvel ran a miniseries called "Battleworld." Yadda yadda, Dr. Doom a single planet composed of all the different Marvel timelines. The police force controlling everything is the Thor Corps, which includes dozens of different iterations of Thor, including a Groot Thor.

Dagwood222 ,

What joke?

Thanks in advance

Dagwood222 ,

I love how the more I learn about the GOPs the more there is to despise
